Draw from life more.

You stand in front of the subject and you simply try to decompose its form with chunks of color. Do some drawing in the air if it helps you a little. I can't tell you what are you doing wrong or how to block shit. It's just a thing that comes up with time and practice.

here's a really rough approximation as to how to approach it.

visually break down the image, identify different areas of color and value and treat them like "cell shading" from a cartoon, though with more levels of color and value than your average cartoon.

If it helps, blur your eyes when looking at your subject, then you're just looking at color and form instead of a "figure' or a "kiwi"
