If I draw something and I want to ink it, what material would I get to ensure the ink doesn't ruin the image in the case that I mess up, or do I ink directly on the sketch?

you ink on a light board over a new sheet

This.
Alternatively you can use white out and scan.
Use tracing paper that can take inking if you don't want to ink directly on a sketch. White gouache/opaque watercolor is usually recommended for direct corrections.

I feel utterly retarded for not realizing this is why people rave about light boxes/boards.
