And why you just dont go fuck yourself? Do you know how many books i read and how many time I spend in this fuckin shit? A fuckin lot.
>>
>>2373613
Oh man...I uh might actually need some advice if you are willing to give any.
I am a 19 year old guy who is trying to be a digital artist in a country where there aren't that many digital artists and I got some propositions from mobile game companies rising up here and there, no grand money or anything nor does my skill deserve it but it's not bad pay.
The two problems that I have is that while I might be above average here and the guys might like my art, I am shit compared to guys in proper countries so I really want to dedicate as much time as I have to study so that by the time I am in my mid twenties I actually AT LEAST partially know my fucking shit.
I am not sure if I should live off my parents for longer and just keep practicing and refining myself or if I should already start accepting these jobs, I am just scared to stop progressing.

Second thing is that I am a kid that grew up on pirated fucking CRPGs of ye olde, Ultima, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Wizardry. I mainly played Arena shooters, RPGs, strategies and Grand strategies, JRPGs etc. all my life and it sort of shaped me into this very typical /v/idya elitist kind of a shitbag, so I hate mobile games. Now that doesn't really matter for the job as long as it's interesting and gets you the pay, but mobile games are very often everything but interesting. Playing Xenoblade, Gothic and the like you want to do concept art for all sorts of amazing fantasy worlds, instead of just endless temple runs and "Insert X" Ninja.

Basically is it worth it to start working this early, is there danger of my progress slowing down and is it actually fun or am I in for a bore that I will not enjoy at all? I know the chance of suddenly winding up at CDprojekt Red or something like that as a concept artist is almost null but one can always dream.
Also fuck my dreams up if they are too childish and explain how the industry works if you could please, since it doesn't really exist here.
>>
>>2373623
Also what are the chances of succeeding even if you live in a shithole?
I mean, I like to think that as long as you are actually dedicated, improve fast and put your stuff out on the net there is always a chance to get at least some interesting gig somewhere in the world...right?
>>
>>2373522
are you me anon?
>hobbyist tier for years
>stagnate because normies told me I was amazing
>only now deciding to actually draw for serious
>>
>>2373623
If you're concerned about your skill level, it's all about finding the right people who are willing to work with you. I am very fortunate to have had someone who was willing to give me a chance at my terrible skill level in 2012 but I worked my ass off everyday to get better as I didn't want to lose that opportunity.

It depends on the company you're working for. I used to think the same as you with regards to mobile games, but in the end i realized that there are actually playable ones in the mountain of shit. You can do some interesting things and the main draw is that you get to touch on a ton of different subject matters, not just the things you like, so you're forced to git gud out of your comfort zone. For comparison i've done stuff for Brave Frontier and Phantom of Kill among other stuff

It's up to you if you if you want to start early, but imo there's no rush
>>
>>2373634
Interesting.
Final question if you don't mind, would you like to move to big vidya industry at some point?
Also all anons in general who have any experience with the field, could you also reply to my questions?
I have to go now, so thanks a ton in advance.
>>
>>2373620
im not down playing your achievements, but mentioning that 2 pics is indicative of cherry picking.
>>
>>2373643
I don't think I will, not anytime soon. Right now I get to draw a large variety of things (backgrounds, characters, weapons, etc etc) with various different styles (super anime, western, painty, etc) and unless I can be sure I can do that again I won't.

>>
>>2373732
What do you mean by "copied"; the red tag? You literally copied everything, or just the pose or concept?
I didn't know people do this... I am used to use references only when needed... (mostly because I dont like)
>>
>>2373815
Yeah, also confused >>2373732 . What's the difference between copied and ref?
>>
>>2373851
>>2373815

Copied is 1:1, referenced is not 1:1. Say he needed help drawing a head or a hand and consulted a picture for only the head or hand. That's using reference.
>>
>>2373815
>>2373851
Copied usually means that he tried to reproduce the original exactly, maybe add some of his own style to it but if you compared it to the original then they'd be very similar. A lot of people who say they used a reference mean that they actually copied a reference.

Using a reference means you hunt around for images to use as inspiration for what you're working on or to fill in holes in your mental library. Say you're making some transformers fanart and you want your transformer to have a chest piece like one of those old cars from the 50s. You'd pull up a bunch of pictures of old cars to get an idea of how it looks instead of trying to find one that perfectly fits the perspective of your drawing and copying it

ref- when you are doing a different work than the ref, but the ref has info which can help you in your current work

>>2373771

Basically, knowledge. I started focusing on anatomy from imagination only until I was decent at it, those end of 2013 drawings just show the same method as today, I'm just better at it now.
Learn the muscles, from écorchés, medical books etc, know where each muscle connects on what bone and then and only then you can complete with references.

I'm lazy to select one image at a time so instead I'll link imgur gallery. It may not be a good idea but idc. Not like it can be that bad.

Drawings years ago -> http://imgur.com/a/rOWVk

Somewhat recent starting from Nov 1st(Bottom( -> http://imgur.com/a/XzHfh
>>
>>2374147
You're copying the books instead of learning from them. It's not enough to redraw everything you see, you need to pay attention to the lessons they teach

The loomis mannikins are a simple way to represent the form and anatomy of the body in a pose. When he uses them in the balance exercises it's to show you the importance of maintaining balance in your poses, not so you can redraw them.

The list goes on and on. I see dozens of images of you copying the books but not learning from them and applying their lessons to your own work. If you only ever copy then you'll only ever get better at copying
>>
>>2374147
>>2374160

I heard somewhere that I do need to apply what I learn to my own work, but there can not be any if I'm learning. Or I'm doing this wrong. I must be doing it wrong. I know all I'm getting good at is coppying stuff, and that is bad. How do I make my own out of lets say Loomis book? Practice drawing mannequins till I drop? :D
>>
>>2374147
>>2374160
>>2374177

And it's rather tedious to start drawing with measurement/proportions in mind, it takes a lot of time for me. I can not eye-ball it that well yet.
>>
>>2374177
start with gesture drawing
>>
>>2373756
wheres that picture that tells you to draw with your eyes and not your brain
>>
>>2374208

Loomis doesn't teach gesture, at least I have not stumbled upon any in his book. Just proportions and mannequins.
>>
>>2374230
well then looks for other tutorials? Anon you also need to figure things out on your own.
>>
>>2374230
>>2374239

I know, Vilppu, Hampton, Proko are the ones that teach about gesture. And there may be more that I'm unavare of. I watched all of those(concerning gesture that is, not fully ofc) and I couldn't really understand the gesture that well. The ones I attempted to sketch appeared like crap.

I've been there. I'm only just finally coming out of my art funk and honestly, you need to force it. Just draw even if you hate it and it makes you cry. I find just doing gestures for awhile makes me feel a little better and more motivated even though they're kinda dull to do for me.

That said, there's subtle improvement, especially in the coloring and I think the newer pic is adorable honestly. :) Please draw more. You have a lot of potentIal there.

I almost want to fap to this but then I notice small errors everywhere, everything just looks a little off. It's good enough non-artists will love it, but lacks the little touches that would push it to the level fur haters will let it pass for sake of quality. You haven't delved into anatomy to give her that extra softness in subtle areas, you haven't looked into fabrics to properly indicate where her weight lies most heavily upon the bed, and I see nothing that shows you've dove into learning perspective. A lying down pose to you is a standing pose with a bed backdrop placed behind.

You are right mane, that cow monster is a big girl. she should look like she is exerting some force on the soft thing she's lying on, and on her own body.

>2012
started drawing in college out of boredom with a friend, didn't think anything of it, it was just fun. Then i stopped drawing, nothing at all for like 2 years.
>2014
got a job, and most of the times i had nothing to do so i started drawing again, started reading manga and a few of my co workers draw like everyday, so i took it again.
>2015
Out of work, still drawing and shit, but i never drew everyday, i draw like 2-3 hours in 2-3 days a week, sometimes i don't even draw for like 2 weeks, nothing at all.
>2016
Still the same like 2015, but now i don't even know if i want to keep drawing.

I never took classes, or read tutorials or anything, i just drew what was in my mind of whatever i saw that got me thinking "i want to draw something with this". I never liked digital art, so that's not my thing.
I don't know, can you guys give me your honest opinion? should i keep drawing or not?

Stupidest shit I've ever read, have you ever drawn from life? Look at yourself in the mirror and make a cool expression, or a big smile. That guy's art is not good but the wrinkles are justified, she's smiling. Look I'm not often baffled with shit I see on the internet but I cannot fathom how a person in their right mind would say "uh don't draw wrinkles when you draw expressions cause they're young". You do know the face has its own particular anatomy and there are muscles being pulled there, right? Do you literally only draw anime?

>>
>>2376528
Okay while true, it's also common knowledge that in art, every line on the face ages the person, much more so than in real life. For a stylized drawing like anime, it's doubley so. It depends on your drawing style whether or not the wrinkles will make them look aged or tired or not but more often than not, it does.

2009 and 2015.

It's kind of funny how proud I was of my art when I sucked. Now that I'm average and I just sit there picking my drawings apart. My progress has kind of come to a standstill now that I'm in my senior year for a major that has absolutely nothing to do with art (it started dipping around my second semester, so 2013), but some progress is better than none I guess.
>>
>>2379534

That makes two of us at least! Looking at my progress from the last couple of years compared to now is pathetic. It's like the more successful I am in this major, the less time I have for art. I'm lucky if I even get to sit down and draw once a week at this point. I thought I could pick a non-art related major and still have time to draw, but I guess it just doesn't work that way.

Right now, I feel like I don't really know where to go from here. I feel like I'm not learning much from the stuff on the sticky (the links that do work, anyway) since it's mainly geared towards the absolute beginner, but I'm also not sure what I should be doing (and what I can even fit into my schedule anymore).

alright, alright, alright..

I'm going to be completely honest here and even if it seems unrealistic or whatever this is seriously all I did.

The biggest mistake I see people make on /ic/, is draw a character or do an illustration wihtout any understanding of the fundamentals, and then ask "critique pls ? how to improve on anatomy ? how does light work ?" etc. This is completely wrong, it doesn't work like that.

I myself tried to do characters when I didn't know anatomy at all, and all it lead to was absolutely horrible things. I understood that, and decided to FOCUS on anatomy. FOCUS on understanding it and it alone as long as it didn't become natural to me. At the same time, I focused on faces, male, female. And literally focused on this and this alone, no character design, no flashy illustration, nothing, just plain anatomy and head sketches.

method: Learn the fucking bones and muscles in their entirety. don't half ass it. And so I did, every bone, every muscle (not some deep ones though) and I actually enjoyed it, except the carpals and tarsals. I used websites, medical illustrations, Frederic delavier's books and Zygote body which was freaking awesome at the time.

I wanted to be able to draw any pose, like the Artists I really enjoyed from comics/mangas, completely from imagination. So now that I knew the body, I needed to start Drawing it perfectly from imagination in the two simple Front and back views. That's why most of my starting anatomy drawings are like that. Then when I started finally mastering it a little, I studied other ecorchés, other poses, and drew them by MEMORY and not with references. Start by drawing the skeleton, and then add the muscles on top. It may seem ridiculous to someone that doesn't know the muscles, but it's easy when you do.

So basically, all my anatomy sketches of from the beginning were ecorches from imagination. and heads, unfortunately anime heads.

All of this was done without drawing from references directly, Only looking at it, try to remember key factors, and then draw it from imagination
When I finally started seeing improvement in poses from imagination, I was at a point where I couldn't match the head to the pose, So I focused on that. thought It was gonna be a lot easier than the body. I obviously went with loomis, but stopped right at the proportions lines, my reason was that I wanted to draw everything my way, learn everything from nothing and ended up with: Shit.

that's 2013, then I finally got my tablet, and this is when I really started progressing fast. Strangely enough, when I first tried the tablet, It felt like learning to draw again, felt like drawing with my left hand actually. this is where I almost gave up to be honest. Before I bought a tablet I thought I would immediately start doing these insane digital paintings you know, but not only did I fail every illustration I wanted to do in color (those 3, stopped after that), but my line quality wasn't good at all. as you can see with the chicken scratching around summer 2014. I was on paint tool SAI at the time.
>pic related

then I kept working on my anatomy as usual, This time I focused on my line quality, switched to manga studio 5, and everything was just smoother. helped me a lot.

alright, Now this is where I really took off on my anatomy, believe it or not my faces stayed shit until very recently.

I started doing something I didn't before, looking at A LOT of pictures with apparent muscles, never drew from them, but I looked at a lot of them, engraved them in my mind, how this muscle reacts, how the skin shows this bump, what part of muscle is hidden behind another etc. I started doing this not only with pics I searched, but with everything I looked at. movies, ads, youtube muscle videos, just imagining the people as ecorchés basically, it's a lot of fun.

Search for books From Frederic delavier, fucking great.

summer 2014 passed, having better heads/faces, but way too anime-ish, when I wanted to reach a semi-realistic level
>pic
After finally having a way more acceptable and believable anatomy figures, I had the misfortune to give an advice last year to someone on anatomy and about the way I learned it, received a lot of shit, saying that without life drawing or drawing from references my anatomy is shit, But wtf, I was actually pleased about my progress, and decided to stop browsing here for a while

I don't remember how long it was and from when to when, but I basically stopped drawing for months, around 4/5 months. I lost a lot of motivation, I wasn't in a mental depression at all, but more like an artistic one. After a while my anatomy sketches didn't match what I wanted to draw wich was a lot smoother, more realistic. Every sketch I did just seemed so bad, and unsatisfying. so I just took a break.

I read one punch man. and it literally hit me like a brick. A full truck of bricks actually. Because that was exactly, EXACTLY, what I wanted to achieve with my art. I was already a big big fan of murata's work with Eyeshield 21 since he was playing a lot with perspective etc. but he took that to yet an other level with Opm. I'm not talking about his character design, I'm talking about the attention to details, the new effects, the realism mixed to his stylization. I literally stood up, walking and started laughing like a retard. I was motivated again, felt miserable and regretted not drawing those past months. not only that, but I also found his stream, that was sorcery.

Believe it or not, when I started drawing again, I thought I would be fucking terrible and would suck for the first few days. I ACTUALLY IMPROVED not only on my anatomy, but on faces too. But I actually understood why I improved, because I kept looking at references even without drawing, everytime I watched a movie and found a cool face angle I paused and analyzed the image for a moment, or body, hands

Now for the rest I just don't really know how to put it, I really got into looking at people's art instead of drawing myself, I had a lot of free time back then but started to draw less and less, I mostly was looking at the art of everything I read and focused on it, same for pictures and movies, I just did it a lot more.

from around start of 2015 to summer I must have done 30 drawings and mostly sketch pages like pic related, that's all I have saved up on my pc, but I still notice a big progress, without directly drawing from life or drawing everyday. So saying you won't improve unless you draw 18h a day and copy everything from life is bullshit. you just have to focus on what you draw.

This is gonna sound silly as fuck, but I draw with my mind a lot, be it completely from imagination or "tracing" over things. when I stop to look at a picture of a body or face, I usually "translate" it with lines since this is just my style. This helps a SHIT-TON to remember what you see.

This is how I see it for me: what's so fucking cool when you only draw from imagination from the very start of my improvement, is that when you add to your visual library, your drawings follow! even if you don't draw as often. what might take a hit, is your line quality, but your overall ability to draw is really relying on your imagination and knowledge.

right now the rate at which I post on tumblr is the rate at wich I draw, I post almost everything I do there. and I still see progress in my opinion even if small.

And that's basically all I did. nothing unusual, I just drew from imagination since the start of my practice, and I think that's why I'm able to improve without really drawing that much, sounds like a fucking humble brag though. I do take pride in the fact that almost everything I do is without references because my goal is to do everything from imagination.

I know that I can really improve my anatomy, make it a lot smoother/realistic if I started life drawing, and I can start at any moment, but right now I'm kinda pleased with the style I have because it fits perfectly into manga/comics.

Anyway, Method with which I improved my anatomy:
-Learn the bones of the skeleton, and the muscles.
-Learn where each muscle connects and to what bone (SUPERFICIAL ones are enough, no need to go deeper unless you enjoy it)

-LEARN PROPORTIONS, I forgot about this shit, but my dumb ass directly jumped to anatomy drawings without even knowing universal proportions existed, that's why my first figures look like aliens. Don't know if it's easier to do it before or after knowing your body.

-Draw the human body in front/back view with references first, then without and keep at it until you master it.
-Start studying bodies in different poses, study the muscles only, take a pose from a ref, draw the skeleton, hide the ref and add the muscles, check the ref and compare. do this until you feel like you feel satisfied with your poses.
-Skecth from imagination some more.
-Now focus on "rendering" your ecorchés with skin if I can put it that way. analyze references, the way the muscles are showing through the skin, the bumps, holes, folds etc.

you can do this drawing directly from references if you're not really interested in imagination as much though, no problem with that.

Anyway, hope it somehow helped someone, and don't worry if you want to improve, you will.
