Entry into the first challenge is open until Saturday at 00:00 GMT. People who join after then will be entered into the less awesome Last Artist Standing #2.
From last thread:
So before the thread dies, which will take about a year....
Anyone have someone under your radar for any reason? Any masterful anons that you admire? Any scrappy beginners who seem to have potential that you want to see grow? Or on the flip side, who are you gleefully watching to crash and burn either in the competition or in terms of their own artistic progress?
I spent 3.5 hours on pic and I fuck it up.
I will post it but I hate it.
So I've tried using Krita for once yesterday and by god I love it. But still, there is little things that really piss me off after getting used to photoshop so much. Anyone have any good brushes for Krita? I'm mainly looking for paint brushes and maybe oil.
No. I'm good, but I had a plan. Made sketch and shit all over it.
from the last thread
today's the last day of the urgent site stuff so now i can go back to my old art schedule and do half drawing and half site work.
i'll finally be able to submit more than the minimum
I'm still not sure what you mean. The original name was NoobToPro then it was changed to Phoenix, then to B166ER and then back to Phoenix. The submissions page will alway show your current name, even if you change it later
TheHit is another account. Are you saying that it's yours and you want the name? If you sign in as thehit and change it to something else you can then change your new account to TheHit
I really like what Helio's doing. Inspiring good stuff that's just pleasurable to look at.
GodofMoxie's newest stuff is sweet, too.
To the anon that posted this:
I really like it and it looks ambitious. Can't wait to see it in the later stages.
>tfw you know you suck but deep inside you were hoping someone would mention you in this thread.
alright guys all the time sensitive site issues have been fixed. there are, to my knowledge, no bugs and if i were to get hit by a bus then the site would run autonomously until the hosting expired.
from now on it's all features. thumbnails, follow/favorite users, comments, topics and everything else on the to-do list will be added to the site over the next couple weeks. feels good
>tfw you know you suck and you hope no one mentions you in this thread because being put on blast would be more than you could take at this point
friendly reminder that imgur albums and gallery are no longer banned and the thumbnail limit has been bumped to 4mb because it really is shitty to have to submit it. it's a high priority to automate it
>Can't wait for favoriting to get added, and commenting, so I can spam "source on ref" and "blog?".
I FUCKING HATE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART
i honestly think of quitting if comments are implemented
So I was thinking for a while, why don't we make a booru for this project? It would make other image hosting sites and problems that come with them obsolete. I've not really looked into it yet, but I thought I should suggest it nonetheless.
still the favoring mentality is what may discourage a lot of artists.
we are not drawing for the likes, at the the site wasn't designed with that idea. it was for the sole purpose of making art every day, irregardless of who's gonna like it.
if the likes and comments are implemented, expect a large number of fanart and pandering to escalate. also, artists quitting from frustration and unfair treatment.
and this comes from someone who was mentioned itt.
i'll add a poll to the site and let you guys if they should be implemented or not. if they are the rules would be:
the submitter can't make top level comments. this is to prevent compliment fishing and excuse making
there will be an option for users to put a link to their blog on their profile. some people want to do this challenge anonymously so if its not on their profile dont ask for it
submitters will be able to flag their submissions to show they want critiques. if they don't ask for it then dont give them.
>on favoriting/following artists
nobody will be able to see who follows who or how many followers someone has. not even themselves. the feature will exist to make it easier to keep an eye on your favorite submitters, not as a dick measuring tool
they did a study where they showed same videos to different people except they had the viewcount prominently displayed and for some they saw a high view count in the millions and for others they saw a low count in the hundreds. people consistently rated the higher viewed videos higher. no follower count cancer
drawfaggert and poonpoon at the moment
turnip's stuff is nice but a tad repetitive
Also it's nice to see the majority of people grinding instead of focusing on making pretty things to get mentions in the thread. GJ all you fellow nameless fundie junkies.
> also it's nice to see the majority of people grinding instead of focusing on making pretty things to get mentions in the thread
> GJ all you fellow nameless fundie junkies
I'LL TAKE IT!
>mfw nothing critical to work on
>mfw i can start doing more than the minimum
>mfw i just want to nap
>normally have shitty sleep schedule, sleep at 4-5am wake up at 1pm
>submission timer ends at 10am my timezone
>tfw I've been sleeping earlier and getting up at 9am just for this
thank you for fixing my sleep schedule
if I wasn't the kind of person to leave everything til last minute (or hour), this wouldn't have worked, but it did.
>start drawing session
>urge to fap keeps nagging on me throughout
>finally give in after 10 figures
>edge for an hour, cum, instant regret
>delete 90 GB h-manga folder that I've been amassing for 3 years
You changed me, /ic/.
why am I hearing stories of people drawing for atleast an hour a day for over a year and their work still isn't good? Are come people just not meant to git gud?
>tfw I might be one of those people
>tfw I'm just wasting my time
>tfw I'm just cataloging my own regression for all of /ic/ to laugh at
ditto, i want people in the thread talking about how much work i do because im a piece of shit like that
I don't really understand it either. My best guess would be that they're forcing it too much, and they're not actually drawing what they like, so they just make art that lacks a LOT of passion because they're on "git gud" mode. Instead they should channel learning into something that they enjoy. Whether that is drawing porn, or making cool robot guys. Just make sure you draw what you like. No one is forcing you to sit in a chair and do boring as fuck studies.
the most optimal way of getting good in anything is as follows:
get into a new project
realize your weak points as you go
work on them or else your project will be shit
congratulations, now you're more skilled and experienced than when you started
if all you do is draw inside your comfort zone and mindlessly grind without noticing, reasoning and fixing your mistakes, then of course you'll stay the same forever. the extreme case of this is your typical deviantart progress seen in cringe threads
I've come to expect these things to have that cheesy 'proof I can improve and you can too!!' at the end and this did not disappoint.
Honestly I don't believe these people are actually drawing an hour a day, or anything close to that. Anyone consistently drawing and studying things will get better over time, a couple outliers aren't going to ruin my positive mindset
youre in luck this is like my secret passion.
>1 year of progress
>from a 26 page collage book, theyve made over 50 of them in 2 years
>look at the tags
>look at the fucking tags
>"6 months of studies" giving tips and tricks
>"Perspective on the Male is off. Slightly, but its off."
>tfw started following jmgn back in 2013
proud of ya son
Some people confuse "progress" and "drawing for x years" with "study progress" and "studying for x years"
Most of these people clearly haven't picked up an anatomy book in their life and just changed styles or mediums or they just refined their symbol drawing.
I don't want to be like them!
I DON'T WANT TO BE SHIT!!!!!!!!!!
It's way more likely that they picked up a pencil once, drew something, put it down, then 10 years later picked up another pencil and drew something else and called it 10 years progress.
Well I'm sure they weren't doing serious studies from when they started. I think one of them said they started drawing at 14 so he was probably just aimlessly drawing for a few of those years. But I don't think these guys want to go pro, if they dedicated themselves to art they'd obviously be better but it looks like they're fine with being hobbiests.
The problem I commonly see with individuals that are not improving is a mixture between the following:
> Your mindset and view of what you truly see around you in real life is too far separated from what you actually draw and continue to draw.
> You don't draw outside of your comfort zone ( usually as a result of not understanding the first point)
> You hardly ever draw from life or photographs (and when you do you have no method and don't understand how to place things in space on a 2D surface properly and to scale)
>pretty much just a real lack of understanding off what the fundamentals really are and how to draw exactly what you see.
> You really aren't drawing enough.
The sticky is limited in resources but if people would just take the time to do all the exercises in drawing on the right side of the brain it would push them in the proper direction.
doing the exercises isnt enough. it's the same with any art book, really. it's all about the mindset. there's no difference between mindlessly doing the drawing on the right side of the brain exercises than there is drawing those FWAP old man heads.
michael hampton's book is great for this. he starts by saying that hey listen this is how i do shit but this isn't THE way. learn from everyone and take what you like
Listen to me anons, art is a life long journey. Who the fuck cares if someone gets amazing in a year? Just because you don't get good in a year does that mean you'll never get good at art? Fuck no! Everyone is different anon, some people take longer than others but that doesn't make them any less dedicated or passionate. The only way to find out if you'll git gud in a year is to try. If you don't, move on and keep practicing. Draw for more hours if it bugs you that much. Believe me, anon I know what it feels like to be in your situation. But you won't get anywhere posting or worrying about it. Art takes time, more than a year. You just have to try, every mistake is a new lesson. Once you fix one thing you'll find 20 other broken things but that's okay. You're learning and that's what is important.
The focus of that book, beyond its large amount of pseudoscience, is to force someone that has never been trained in replicating a three dimensional environment or object into a two dimensional surface how to see through a page. It shows you the proper way to see reality through your medium. I mean, a one page guide on using a viewfinder would be the tldr version of the book but telling someone to read a certain book is a lot easier then explaining.
It makes total sense, as we age its harder to keep a physically fit body (its all down hill after we reach the peak sexual age of about 18-22) a lot of people don't know this and let it slide.
Art has always been a window into ones psyche whether conscious or not.
So naturally its no surprise that these artists male/female are projecting their current physical decline through their art.
Its actually really sad.
Even if its a well drawn/rendered fatty.
Yeah I've seen that too. And drawing characters with ever more colourful hair and piercings, but they also look steadily dumpier and generic. Milo Yiannopoulos called a feminist out for this on TV once, said there's this rediculous trend of redesigning female characters to be more "realistic"; meaning they become short, dumpy, lesbian looking women in cargo pants.
bruh, i was talking about the masses, not everything said directly at you.
and i was not even talking about myself, im a male aged 24 and weigh 75kg whilst doing regular exercise and have an almost perfect blood pressure... soo...
who do you guys think isn't that good right now but shows potential? I'm hoping once the websites finished we can help these guys out and just have a community of great artists.
>the even rover will be a god
think of it this way, if you have not gotten pregnant or knocked someone up by now, you are literally in the top 10% of reasonable humans.
>even fatties who dont get sex are more reasonable than attractive idiots.
> "perspective on the male is off. Slightly, but its off"
> oh shit, i often make comments on my work of a similar caliber
> please tell me i'm not delusional
> open image
> nearly vomit
yeah ok i feel a lot better now
i went on /fit/ and saw threads about calorie counting, which i'm not interested in. i'll eat generally healthy but eat a shitty burger when i want. i'm just beginning to work out but i do it in my room. squats, situps, pushups. etc every day, i figure that will be enough as long as i stick to it
>Thumbnail of finished work
>Click and it's just a bunch of gesture drawings
Holy shit, time flies so quickly when you're dead focused on drawing.
Sometimes the music I'm listening to just becomes a blur and all of a sudden when I actually hearing it, I often find myself thinking "what the hell? how is it the last verse already i could've sworn the song started about 10 seconds ago".
I like this feeling.
Also, proportions are hard when you're tired.
absolute silence is fucking terrifying to me
especially late at night when my mind tends to wander
the music keeps me calm and it sort of acts as an ambient way of motivating and energizing
Is it a crutch, though? Multi-tasking is known for detracting from proper execution. Maybe I need to learn how to live without it if I want to really get gud.
I'm not exactly at the technical level where I can effectively impart emotional integrity into my work.
It's mostly just the "oh fucking yeah you're gonna do this art shit right now, go for it" kind of thing.
drawing without music, it's weird but I feel like I can do better work like that, I also do it just for 20-30min
after I put Noisli, you can make your own "nature" pattern, quite cozy
painting on canvas without music is hard for me, but I will try a plein air and the calm in a forest.
>/ic anon says your stuff is sweet.
What is this complex feeling?
So far, for today i'm enjoying anon313 and leo516 in particular, with special mention for crn who's actually trying to do illos and storytelling every day, and not just submitting sketches/studies
The only thing that gets me off is despair, anger and helplessness. Send help
>tfw you can't render and every time you try it looks muddy as fuck
I'm sorry i don't meet your expectations, please tell me how to please your highness, i need your approval, you're not just some nobody anon, i must get your likes, i'm crying you won't acknowledge me, i'm going to hang myself right now and it's all your fault!
i find it funny that some people take not being mentioned in the thread and use it as motivation to work harder and git gud while others are discouraged by it, even the ones who admit theyre shit or dont work very hard
Personally I fucking hate it. It's questions like that that turn shit like this into places like permanoobs. That place quickly went from a place to get actual critique and post progress into a place where people post for attention, the reason it could never be like CA.org.
What question? Am I going to make it?
No, because I've kept track of my progress from day one and have always seen good improvement. I'll spare you the hugbox shit. If you're a month in and haven't seen great improvement, you need to shape up or quit. Biggest mistake i see from 90% of people is that they draw with no end goal and don't spend the time to iron out their mistakes. Those are the people I've seen without improvement and the lot of them eventually quit. If you make quantity over quality a priority, you'll never see quality as long as you live.
i like how hostile everyone is. i was one of the beginner gains expert and i dont feel any ill will. i'm as dumb for noob flexin as the oldfags are with their i didnt make it so you wont cynicism
>people started putting more work into their submissions
That isn't cancer senpai, that's exactly what we want. Work harder on making the daily post good, and grind fundamentals whenever we can to make tomorrow's daily even better.
Doing it for favs or comments in this thread is detrimental sure, and if you end up just posting comfort zone sketches that you know you can make look good then you'll never improve and it'll be shit for you, but working harder to make your stuff look better is great.
>have good people post average work
>average work looks great to new/ weak anons
>makes them try harder to not look pathetic
>lava brought a girl to the wresting team and now the boys have to be serious
>mfw lava's master plan begins to work..
>i'm good but i cant build a fanbase
sounds tragic. so glad OP is cucking you people.
so much beta in these threads, man up and draw, quit trying to psyche each other out with passive aggressive jabs. Im winning this shit without a doubt.
oh yeah, op here, that was the old submissions page for people that didn't want to sign up but still wanted to view submissions. i guess it broke at some point. i'll fix it now should be good to go in a min or two
jmgn gestures have so much life in them.. *sigh* 6 days down.
a side-effect of viewing all your internet content through tumblr and NOTHING ELSE. tumblr thinks that making ugly characters makes them more "realistic". therefore, the uglier your characters, the better you are at art.
mfw my art could have ended up on that list just as easily
>tfw roughly zero free time the whole day and a million "reasons" to go pass out in my bed but I'm sacrificing sleep for drawing gains in fear of being eliminated
What have you done to me.
I think hes still working on it you fucking idiot.
Normally I hate websites that won't let you enter and view content without an account, but I don't really care in this case since the entire point is based around account features like submitting. If you just want to see the art, many artists have it uploading to galleries like dA. And being able to submit without an account would be pointless because there would be no way to tell if an individual was submitting daily. I think it would be good to allow guests to do everything but submit though, since the log in page barrier is a huge turn-off for most people. I certainly would have left without making an account if I wasn't on-board with this before the site was even live.
Then fuck off. Jesus Christ. If you can't bring yourself to come up with a bullshit username then you have some major problems. You don't even have to provide an email.
Don't worry about the registration. Those in the competition register. If outsiders want to view the art people make they should register or fuck off
I guess I could see people putting down the less skilled participants, which would be unfair if they weren't participating themself, but on the other hand anyone could just make an account to view art without actually submitting anything. So I don't think it's important either way, but it would be a nice courtesy and we'd probably get more participants if they could actually see what they're getting into before going through the trouble of making an account. Because I have a feeling most people who don't already know what this is about will just turn away at the sign up page. But then again, I don't see how someone would end up at the site without already coming through this thread first, so they'd already know what it's about.
Anyone else having trouble with submitting something through chrome? I just tried to and I got a 408, so I switched to FF and it worked. It might most likely be me, but if not I thought it would be worth mentioning.
>oh god a minute left
>fuck why do I cut it so close every time
>4-5 other guys pop up between me and the end of the day
haha I'm not the only last second fucker
at least we're drawin'
yeah definitely, the ship won't go down with me although it has gone down a couple times because of me
Midnight GMT is at night for me, so I draw in the morning and/or afternoon and submit it later in the day when submissions open back up. I guess it's technically doing my art a day ahead, but it's all in the same day for me so I don't consider it cheating.
Personally I'm going to be very lenient with the tribunal. Other than troll submissions, I'll probably only vote on things that were very obviously done very quickly, like one simple gesture. I think even with beginners, you can tell if they put time into it. So we should vote based on estimated time, not quality, and lean toward not voting in the case of particularly slow people.
I kinda want, if leaderboards and/or achievements become implemented, for the badges/trophies to look shitty as fuck.
Self-portraits could be a fun challenge if we didn't have accounts. But no one wants to be known for being a female or fat or black, or anything else that would get specific attention.
>Who favorite artist x3
>I'm scared I'm not gunna make it. What if I stagnate.
>Who girl here?
If you guys are trying to fucking psyche me out of quitting, it's starting to work. Fucking cancer, I just want to give feedback about bugs every now and then here you degenerates.
If I didn't know better, I'd think people were just shitposting and dicking around until the last hour of the deadline.
