I love yoshinari, he's an amazing 2d animator and it feels like he can do anything. Are those backgrounds actually Yoh's? Not that I doubt he could do it, he's incredibly skilled, but often times one famous japanese animator gets credited for the work of less famous animators/concept artists who worked with him on the same project because people just see the images online and assume it's his.

This, he was doing mech designs and keyframes for Evangelion before I was born. Even then he was doing pretty mindblowing stuff but it helps to remember that his current skill level is from constantly working for at least as long as I've been alive.

It takes years to get on that level but if you dedicate yourself you can get there too. You might even surpass Yoshinari but you won't know unless you try.

For the environment stuff, drawing a lot of environment in general helps, along with architecture and perspective studies. Instead of shooting straight for the style, you could try to learn from real life and then start pushing things toward it. Either way, your own personal style will naturally gravitate toward the things you like, whether it's consciously or not.

I've been looking around for scans of the KLK books, and didn't find much. The books themselves are like $180+ for the set of three, so I guess no one wants to break the spines to scan them.

Two of Yoshinari's books have been scanned, though.
