Beginner Thread

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studys & getting critique.

>Thread study: I dont fucking know. More animals?

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

there's a lot going on here! you've got a bunch of gestures of animals and of people, some character illustrations, an eye, some rendering, etc... to post something so scattered like this and then just say "any help appreciated" doesn't seem very practical or efficient! being vague with what you're practicing and what you want critiqued begs for vague responses, like "loomis" or "read the sticky," so make an effort to be specific in the future.

Hi I drew this. I based it on another drawing not on real life caused id figure it'd be easier and a good stepping stone before drawing from actual real life. I'll post the drawing i based it on in a second.

I would greatly appreciate feedback, I feel really lost and in dire need of a teacher. (I'm trying to get one but they all seem to be on vacation for christmas.)

your lines are shitty chicken scratches, especially the curves. You'll improve your understanding of spherical forms if you keep practicing them, but your lines will stay shit unless you start learning to loosen your grip and using your entire arm and shoulder to draw. Make your lines longer, more confident and purposeful, and make as few of them as you can. Sort of like >>2324166 but they're not the best example.

I suspect that the size of your tablet's drawing surface or the resolution of your canvas is stifling you. You'd be doing yourself a favour if you practice traditionally instead with large pieces of paper

youre symbol drawing, go read the sticky. You can shade if you dont know what youre shading obviously.
>>
>>2324516
>tracing
But I'm not, I just copied my best from a reference. I've been criticized for relying too much on references and that I am guilty of but not tracing. (Though someone in the porn thread did say they thought it looked traced).

I am guilty of symbol drawing. What is tukes? And how do you just "stop symbol drawing"?
>>
>>2324522
to stop symbol drawing either bloc in everything, look intensely at every angle or construct everything out of forms.
>>

oh yeah, the head and left arm are still from the gesture and are pretty inaccurate. Looking out for the spine is a good tip though, thanks.
>>
>>2324891
That's a good sign! I find that the difference between someone who has the potential to go professional and someone who's destined to be a hobbyist is that a professional actually enjoys doing drills and studies and the like. And even if you only plan to be a hobbyist, at least you'll be a pretty good one!

At the beginning, worrying about specific anatomy isn't too important, but it's good to at least try and nail the proportions and to capture the gesture of the pose. Keep on keeping on, dude.

i can vouch for the other 3 so i assume hes just as competent. Look. I hate minorities just as much as the next guy. By far and large they are lesser people. That doesnt stop some from being really good and some of ours from being really shit. Take Ukraine for instance, they dont even count as white people anymore. So drop your old fashioned racism and be more flexible within your hate, man. You probably appreciate some minorities that are anonymously posting. All this hate of course, doesnt include asians, who are by far and large slightly better than the white population.

Drawing gestures is meant to draw what you see and capture the motion, nothing else really matters as long as you can tell what they're doing it a good start

You sound dense. You can use reference without it being copying. And you just said you're studying color and value. Personally I think the painting looks better than the original photo.

Now draw another lizard. It would be a shame if a painting was overworked and began to look bad. Hey I even found one for ya.
>>

I know, the point is that not all studies are made equal and not every study where you copy a reference is a waste of time. It depends on your goal.

My advice would be to look at different pictures of women or men or whoever/whatever you're drawing in different poses and make sure you don't forget to draw an outline. OutlInes are your friend, trust me. I just split up human anot my into different simple shapes and guide them with lines. Pic related, I kept my outlines for this picture. If you look closely at the lighter shaded lines I turned a full human body into simple shapes and traced along those shapes and added lines to show movement, which direction an arm or a leg is going.

Try to focus on laying you proportions correctly before you actually fill in features. Have a single, clear light source. Don't smudge your paper with your finger

>>2326581
This is really nice construction but I think it's held back by the way you can't make out a light source. Looks flat, you know? Also the lips point downward on (the face's) right side. As for proportions I can't tell because I don't know your reference. Look into values a little more and you'rd be really good.

Make sure your drivers are installed correctly and see if you can get your pen pressure to adjust either size or opacity. Unless you're going for a very particular look everything you draw will look bad without pen pressure. I've never used Krita so I can't advise on brushes, though. Sai is pretty nice as babby's first digital art platform.

not the same anon but
a.) if you ask for criticism expect criticism even for things you like in the drawing. what do you even want concrit on?
b.)you can't expect everyone to understand the specific stylistic choices you used whether on purpose or not
c.) Even if something is done intentionally it doesn't necessarily translate into a successful drawing.

Stylization thread will say the exact same thing. It's NOT a style. Whether I can convince you now or youll figure it out later in your journey will hinge completely on whether or not i can convey it visually. So this is my try to get you to see the error of your thoughts.

PS: you belong in the beginner thread since you aren't thecnically proficient. You will recieve nothing but mockery in the alternative thread.

This is because the shape of the eye allows for it to be bigger in comparison to yours. Also, your being too realistic ( or trying to) imagine if someone put a photo and just made the eyes bigger and the nose smaller, that would look terrible. Basically with great rendering thats what your style would achieve,

Most people here will recommend Loomis. Try reading through "figure drawing for all it's worth". Study the pics, it should give you a good idea of how to apply using 3d shapes to construct the figure.
>>
>>2326922
I wanted advices, not bullshit. By stating the obvious, you're just saying 'oh smaller eyes lol'. I won't apologize except for those who have actually helped me.

Btw let's leave the drama behind. I'm gonna practice

Everything else was criticism too, but you decided to be a bitch rather than have a conversation about it.

try gestures and build people out of cubes and spheres. I recommend you look at prokos gesture tutorial or vilpu ( he applies building figure with blocks on a more bodily level)

Can you post your work or an equivalent redline to validate your opinion then? You're basically spreading missinformation by supporting a style based ego. And I'd hate to let you go without arguing further.

Who gives a shit how many times you've critiqued someone. Get this. Maybe... I know it's hard to accept, but maybe they don't agree with you.

It's not the end of the world if people ignore your advice and don't kiss your boots over what you perceive is your superior knowledge.

Say what you have to say and then let it go. You don't need to keep haranguing people or then being snide to them when they don't reply in a way you'd like.

There's obviously more than one person responding to questions, impersonating others and trying to wind everyone up here.

That's the problem with an anonymous board. m, otherwise just move on.

youre just eyetracing theres no point in criticizing, overlay the image and the hand, I could name the way in which singular hands could be improved ( left hand 2 middle fingers shorts, palm small) but honestly just keep track of relative position and negative space. Or start drawing through the form by drawing it in simplified blocks/cylinders

>>
>>2327004

I'm sorry but posting that is useless. Firstly it's sight size. It deals with the kind of eye training and spacial/distance awareness that a beginner is not going to have a handle on. Also it's heavily debated how good a technique when compared to Riley and construction it is to teach.

You're also showing a beginner an example by someone who has been drawing for years. This is a mistake. You're setting unachievable goals which will only serve to instil a feeling of failure when they are unable to even reach anywhere near it.

This is rule 1 in bad teaching. You don't set unattainable targets that will sap a students confidence and dissuade them from continuing to study.

The reason Loomis was such a good teacher is he used simpler examples, tailored more towards the level a beginner would be at. Increasing in gradual stages throughout the course of instruction.

Posting a bit more if that's okay

This was done from a study of a figure off Google, I tried a combination of drawing by sight and drawing based off of forms.
I definitely am having issues visualizing certain parts of the body, especially the legs, as simple forms, and I think I fuck myself up more trying to "correct" lines that look odd than anything.
Also, hands and feet REALLY need some work, gonna do some studies of those tomorrow.
I also find I have a lot of issues replicating images on the left side of the canvas onto the right. Are there excercises that help fix that? I'm avoiding using Mirrors or Transform tools as much as possible.

Any other blatantly obvious issues or criticism in general would be great, I know this is real entry level

I dont believe the general idea of blocking and refining is wrong to show.

its just as easy to argue that showing him something bad(flawed) would potentially hurt him. did you want me to link this one?
>>
>>2327087
this falls within the category of things that are hard to critique for long to explain reasons, it isnt bad enough or good enough to be critiqued generally or precisely. So nobody will want to do it.

I'll give you a critique if you try really hard on a single face.

TLDR; any critique you can recieve for this would be near useless.because you understand the concept but have uni formally bad application.

She looks a bit off balance
>>
>>2326732
Her left breast should connect to the muscle under her arm. Also, they lack a bit of volume.
>>
>>2326732
You just drew what you thought hips should be like when you put a V there and then drew the legs around it.

Try to visualize where her hip bones would go and you can see why your picture would be wrong. You can't add that v shape unless both of her legs are extending in front of her. (Imagine it in 3D).
>>
>>2326732
Her right hand shouldn't bend that far. Like bend your own hand and see how far it can bend. Try to put your hand in her position and realize how little degrees of freedom you have.
>>
>>2327109
I get the feeling that you keep drawing the toes as big as they are because you want them to be prominent. However, feet are actually pretty small and unless you're going for a cartooney look, just enlarge the ENTIRE FOOT if you want to draw in detailed toes. Otherwise, keep it simple.
