Do you guys know any digital artists that are painterly? I mean with visible brushstrokes and lots of textures.

What should I do to archive a painterly look?

I think we tend to fiddle with things too much when we paint digitally, and move our stylus around mindlessly. Achieving a painterly look seems to be connected to thinking more and painting less. Assess the image, think about what you want to achieve, then lay down as few strokes as possible and leave them alone. This is in stark contrast to the "scrubbing" that I usually end up falling into.

Jaime Jones has a very decisive-looking style.

Then again, these pieces by Whit Bracha probably involved a lot of noodling around, yet they still maintain a traditional feel. Maybe because they look like they were painted opaquely. Too much painting with opacity seems to lead to mush. I think the flow setting was used a lot on these. Creating soft edges through broken texture like a drybrush stroke, rather than infinite softness as is common in digital art.

I'd still describe these as "decisive-looking". Doesn't look too fiddly or smoothed out. And they have a variety of edges without getting unnaturally soft or unnaturally hard.

Here is another painterly piece I've always liked and remembered. I believe it is by Khang Le but I'm not 100% certain.

It's from his patreon. He gave it out for free. He was like "This is too shitty to charge you guys for, so just have it. I'll try to stop sucking ass so much and produce something half decent for you all over the holidays" lol.
