Completely disagree. He makes use of shape and light in such a way, that makes his work look much more detailed than it actually is. His brush economy is amazing.

I do see what he means, though. I've seen photos gone through filters that have a similar look to them as his train station piece. It's reminiscent.
Not to try and shit-talk the skill required to do it, though, and of course even if you were to put a photo through the filter lighting and composition is still important.

Which pieces? I think he usually has strong colour. Maybe you are mistaking limits of printing technology at the time? Often they would print only one or maybe a couple colours because of limits in technology or to save money. So he would have to paint with very limited hues. I'm not super familiar with Leyendeckers work, so i dont have any examples, it's just something i've sometimes noticed when looking at his work. I think there are some problems with the one i originally replied to tho, like her skin for example, it's completely dead and boring, and the use of orange clues here and there comes off as a bit tacky and hastily done. But printing technology hadn't even crossed my mind, and it's obviously the reason why. Now i can appreciate his work way more.
