I decided to try out water coloring out of sheer boredom the other day. I haven't done it since must be like 8th grade.... I'm 22. I tried to paint a bear but man o man is water colors difficult for beginners like me. I'm a history major, but maybe one of you art majors can critique my bear and tell me where I can improve in. It would be much appreciated, because I had a lot of fun doing this, although I'm much better at drawing.

Thanks in advance guys! I can also post my doodles if you guys wanna see em!

It alright, but it doesn't look like watercolor.
Use more water and less paint.
There are many ways to paint things, but the simplest method would be to lay down a base color (**leave some areas blank as highlights), wait for that to dry, then get a different color for the shadows.

Just don't overdo it. Keep it simple.
>>
>>2303889

Isn't that goauche? You cannot add white with watercolor like that, can you?
>>
>>2303889
i really like it mostly for that use of grey/white. me as a fully cell shading person often forget such things.
>>
>>2303889
proportions in his cute widdle face are messed up. Nose and mouth in particular.

If you google 'watercolor bear" you'll see no one uses white. I don't believe professional artists use white with water color. Your goal would be to make washes and build up texture with layers, versus washing it all in sienna and overlaying white as a texture. Doesn't work like that.
>>
>>2303889

I fucking love it

Just fix his eyes.
>>

its cute anon. It brought warmth to my heart on a shitty day, so thank you for that.

That's exactly what i thought as well. Not like water colors I can think of. I think i used the paint to thick, it is a whole different technique than just simple painting, I am still learning :/

>>2303933
I dunno, my little thing of water colors has a white option, so I used it. Like I said, I am by no means a professional artist, I was just bored and high.

>>2303935
Thank you :)

His nose bothers me too, it's hard to do though man, and this is only my first time in yeeaaars.

Not really, sometimes I have to bring up an animal to glance at real quick just to get the general layout. But I'm not sitting their with the pic in front of me the whole time or anything. I like to free draw

Just saw your thread over on /b/
Proportions in the face are a little off, as others have pointed out. The way the belly connects to the neck is a little strange, I would drop those highlights down, rounding out the chest and making it longer. You should continue to render the front left leg a tad, because right now it's hard to distinguish from the back of the belly, and then add grass like you were planning.

Also, your style of cross-hatching/rendering would be absolutely perfect in a print. If you're ever near a printing press I would encourage you to try some intaglio(or really any kind of print making), because it would go great with your style.

Pretty weak but keep it up, also you should find the beginner thread and start dumping there. Some nice people are around and like to give noobs tips

>I don't believe professional artists use white with water color.
Incorrect. Only annoying purists have a problem with gouache.
>Your goal would be to make washes and build up texture with layers, versus washing it all in sienna and overlaying white as a texture
While it's true you want to build layers starting from lightest-darkest, but putting a thin wash over everything is called glazing and it's common practice.
>>
>>2304708

Not him, and I like your stuff, but getting defensive on this board is a bad idea. People smell the slightest hint of ego and swarm.

Posting your stuff in the general threads is usually better off, unless you've got a dump of stuff.

>>2304708
don't be a cunt OP your bear is shit. You're obviously a beginner. I gave you props earlier but I thought you weren't a shithead.

What a faggot. This faggot gone butthurt so fast after 1 message
>>2304867
>but getting defensive on this board is a bad idea. People smell the slightest hint of ego and swarm.
that is called "hypersensitive snowflake syndrome" because d/ic/k fags often cant take any crytics about their opinion (that often just them saying crap like "ITS SHEEET" or "POST IN ANOTHER THREAD!")
>>
>>2304805
>Only annoying purists have a problem with gouache.
What purists would even say that though? Literally some of the best watercolourists of all time such as Sargent and Homer used white with watercolour
>>
>>2304708
>this is just an art forum, it is ok to make a unnecessary thread about my drawings even if it fits perfectly on a currently existing thread

Fuck off faggot.
>>
>>2304892

All anybody has to do is look at your shit artwork in the OP to see who really has "hypersenstive snowflake syndrome".
>>
>>2304918
I didn't even notice the rest of the garbage you've posted. Do yourself a favor and read the sticky before posting in the beginner thread.

You guys use alot of terms I don't know of. Gouache? Sienna? What is that? A color? I am a total noob when it comes to art.

>>2304892
That's not being defensive, I posted this in the hopes of decent criticism/praise to learn. All I meant is that there is no need to be a git and act all hoity toity about things. But I do appreciate the feedback

>>2304921
I will admit, they are just doodles, but I would also be willing to postulate that my mere doodles are a thousand times better than most crap you will find at any art museum lol. So garbage? Yes and no, I suppose. I just wanted to share them is all, nobody ever sees the inside of my notebooks...

> only purists don't use white
I think the use of white is fine in highlight, but don't you think this is a blatant overuse and a dependence on gouache to assimilate depth and texture?

The giant white eye highlights are bugging the shit out of me now. He needs a jaw for his mouth. His eye which is on three quarter view should be partially obstructed.
>>
>>2305174
I believe it's supposed or be impressionistic in nature, doesnt have to be 110% anatomically correct
>>
>>2304903
>What purists would even say that though?
Like I said, annoying ones. There's some people that think you shouldn't use ANYTHING besides watercolor paint and water - no wax or masking fluid, no gouache. Most people that still hold onto this ideology were classically trained by strict teachers who learned it from their strict teachers, so on and so forth. Others think of it as nothing more than expensive White Out and that if you fuck your watercolor painting up and it's something that can't be fixed with reapplying water and trying to lift it out or cover it up with a darker color - trash it. They look at gouache as a crutch.

I guess I can understand it in the sense that gouache is chalky so if it's not laid down correctly it can stand out and look shitty, and it really is better to try to leave areas of white for highlights, but all that really matters is if it looks good.

>>2305121
>Gouache?
Gouache is opaque paint that you use just like watercolor.
>Sienna?
Sienna is a reddish, dirt color. Burnt sienna is a color I always have on my palette as it works really well with other colors.

>>2305174
>I think the use of white is fine in highlight, but don't you think this is a blatant overuse and a dependence on gouache to assimilate depth and texture?
Personally, no. I mean, I think it looks uneven and it fucks up the point of interest as my eye is drawn to the left elbow/shoulder instead of the face, but there's certain parts that benefit from the white.

OP here, I consulted this picture of a bear to do my painting, all I tried to do was paint the same thing pretty much, so you can compare it with my painting, I thought it was fairly accurate. Certainly no master piece, and I am seeing a lot of areas I can improve in thanks to you guys.

Like one if you said, I need more focus on the face, and I used the white too liberally, rather than leave paper blank and highlight from there. But I didn't know there were rules to it lol. I got the texture down pretty well I think though.
>>
>>2305124

The white above his eyes makes him look surprised, the reflection in them makes him look cross eyed. I can see from >>2305295 that he has a bit of a lighter tone on his eyelid, but in yours it just looks like a reflection rather than anything else. I say just remove it on the left one.
>>
>>2305295
Never use black in watercolor. Never use white.
The dark colors could easily be a mixture of payne's gray and umber. The face could be tints of yellow ochre and sienna for the more reddish tones. Sepia for the dark ear shadows. Washes paynes gray for the nose highlight. Washed out burnt umber for the "white" fur highlight sections.
>>
I love your bear
>>
>>2304903
>>2304805

The thing is, a lot of beginners tend to just put white in everything instead of using the white of the paper, or they rely on white completely for highlights instead of learning to paint around them. And that can really cripple their exploration of the medium as a whole.
It's not that you can't ever use white, just that you'll be much better off if you learn to live without it first. Learn what can be done with the white of the paper before complicating it with gouache.
You have to open yourself up to the possibilities before you can whittle it down to what works for you.

Parroting 'no white ever' is just a quicker way to get the message across. Once an artist is capable enough to decide to use white, they're probably too confident to listen to what purists might say, and too good for purists to bother saying anything.

Tried painting a tiger... I kind of like using white paint lol, it gives it a certain shine.... My girl is sick so I thought I'd give it to her, that's why there's words on it.
