What do you all listen to while drawing? For a long while I've simply put on music, but as of late I've been trying to listen to podcasts or audiobooks, preferably ones that'll teach me something as I sketch.

Anyone else do this, or have good stuff to share?

Be sure to listen to loud music that is as distracting as possible, podcasts with annoying people talking loudly or documentaries where you keep looking at the other screen to see what's going on.

I find that when I do art, there's this extra bit of my mind left unoccupied. It wanders off on its own and I will just start thinking about other things/getting distracted. Putting some background noise on fills up this little void and I am able to focus. Obviously anything really visually engaging is a bad idea, and certain stages, like idea generation, require silence.

But of course, art for me is just work. Perhaps you are some kind of uber art genius that needs every last brain cell invested in his masterpiece.

Beksinski listened to classical music while he painted. Are we missing out on some better version of beksinski because he listened to some tunes?

Faye Wong has been all I've listened to while working the past few months, real nice, anything with English is distracting to me.

I've been listening to various channels on Pandora and a lot of Anne Briggs lately. I don't like listening to audiobooks while drawing. I can do podcasts because they don't require as much of your attention.

The only podcast that I'm obsessed with is Drunken Peasants, they're fuckin' hilarious. As for music I like psychedelic techno such as: Astrix, Infected Mushroom, LazerHawk, Mega Drive, and Shpongle.

It should really be called the "The Drunken TJ Podcast", because Scotty parrots everyone and Ben's input is mostly comprised of disgusting mouth noises.

I usually listen to these videos while drawing, I enjoy absolutely all of them and I repeat the videos several times.
Sometimes they're distracting but they make me feel comfortable.
In terms of music I usually use climatic music like the intros of Black Metal albums, like The Corpses Sink Forever by Carach Angren or Deathspell Omega's Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice, any Burzum album works too.
Celtic music and girl's acoustic covers from all around youtube also help me relax a lot.

Varies, but usually I'll listen to music without lyrics if I'm drawing from imagination, since I can't focus properly if there's lyrics. If drawing from reference or life, documentaries/podcasts usually.
>>

Distraction is often not too big of an issue. Sure you can benefit from removing distractions in the early stages of an illustration or when designing, but there's parts of drawing and illustrating that can actually be very mindless and simply time consuming.
>>
If I listen to educational shit it distracts me enough from drawing that I draw worse and distracts me enough from listening that I learn less. And this might come as bad news to some but the average person can't multitask worth shit, you're probably getting a little less out of both activities doing this. There've been plenty of studies on multitasking that can confirm this. I think the only exception when it comes to educational shit is if you're doing what they're teaching about while they're teaching about it, but even then "drawing" is so varied that listening to a podcast on color theory while you do thumbnail sketches won't help you any.

Still, if music or podcasts helps you focus it's probably better off to distract yourself a tiny bit than be anxious and impatient which will probably lead to worse fuckups. Just saying, in terms of the average person it's inhibitive, and you're probably not as exceptional as you think. Ideally, you want music that occupies as little of your brain as possible, so either no lyrics or stuff you don't understand. You might think you don't pay any attention to the lyrics but your brain does even if you don't retain it, you can't switch it off that easily.

Though with all that said, also this guy is right >>2303213 there are points in drawing that are really not very cognitively demanding. Being a little distracted when doing mindless rendering is probably not a big deal.

I actually like to watch sitcoms and sketch portraits of the characters - since they are moving around so much, I find that you have to rely heavily on construction along with observation.

I don't listen to music, I find it kinda distracting. Sometimes while I'm drawing/painting I listen to Dave Rapoza interviews, Jeff Watts videos, etc. on youtube.

But I'm looking for more music like the one that plays here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9XtlfpgAxM

It's inspiring and soothing at the same time.
