In my own experience, tumblr is a lot less garbage than deviantart. In a shorter span of time I've gained literally 6 times the following on tumblr to deviantart with far less effort fucking with shitty groups.

Tumblr takes less upkeep for better results, plain and simple.

Gotcha. You're right dA can be annoying in that regard, getting your stuff viewed without going through groups is next to impossible unless your art is god-like.

Though I still think dA has better options and a better interface, so for someone planning to upload their stuff on the long term I find it superior to tumblr. Similarly, Pixiv is great, but I understand not everyone can moonrunes.

Depends on your goals, I suppose.
If you want an online archive of your work for yourself, deviantart is just fine. Similarly, if you're willing to put the time in with groups you can probably get a decent following.

Personally, I'm just casually trying to develop a following, I'm not willing to bust my ass over it. So I upload to tumblr, take a minute or two to tag it, and occasionally upload to deviantart, but rarely bother much with groups. The results from tumblr are far more substantial for the same amount of effort.
