Hi /ic/. I just got back into drawing around March this year after having stopped for a few years. I'm nowhere near as good as I want to be yet. I've been wanting to get a tablet for a while now, but should I wait until I'm at the level of competency I want on paper first? Also, should I go for a more expensive tablet right off the bat, or start with something cheaper?

Get a tablet whenever you want. You'll get the most out of it when you have solid drawing skills already though. Nothing wrong with getting one while you still are learning to draw, just make sure you still practice pencil and paper at the same time.

In my opinion it is better to invest in a good tablet that will last years rather than buy cheap then later need to buy another nicer one. Just get a good one at the start if you are serious about art, even if you are not yet that skilled.

Get a huion h610 pro.
Practice on both tablet and paper.

No, the sooner you get comfy on a tablet the better off you'll be. Unless you plan to concentrate on traditional media of course.

I have a Surface Book, what program do you guys suggest I use to start drawing on it? (not op) Also, in case you don't know what the Surface Book is, it's basically a tablet that runs Windows 10 so any program you can use on your desktop you can use on the Book.

>One doesn't just BUY a Cintiq....

If you're going to pay for one of those, you might as well buy lumber and a space heater to build your own studio and you'll STILL have money left over to spend on oil paint, canvas thinner, medium, and brushes...

so… would you recommend it?

they're generally accepted as the best tablet available but high-end wacom stuff like that is insanely expensive, so he's saying you better have money to burn

if you give a shit about the cost at all you can find things that will probably work just as well you for you from much cheaper competitors, if you want to spend all that money on a companion 2 go ahead

there are cintiqs on sale for around $1500 right now. that's a lot less than you'll spend in even a year doing real painting (if you're serious about it)

I have a Wacom Bamboo fun (not touch sensitive.

Very good for the price I paid if you ask me.

Now all I need is to learn how to draw.
