Man that nipple looks gross to me. It's so open, wtf. Surprising though, it's in that spot I always hate seeing it drawn on anime girls and shit.
>>
>>2292117

I didn't even notice that.
It is kinda weird actually.
>>
>>2292117

Try being less of a virgin/rampant homosexual next time.
>>
>>2292123
I don't care what you say, the average nipple doesn't have a dip that big. It's an outlier, and it looks weird.
>>

>>
>>2292126

>implying you've ever seen nipples in real life rather than airbrushed photoshoots and porn

it's a normal human udder you dweeb
>>
>>2292134
Here's the thing dumbass, I am myself a woman with boobs of my own, quite a few women in my family, and quite a few years of life drawing under my belt, I'm more than familiar with what real boobs look like considering I have to live with a pair. I've never seen a nip that looked like that, ever, outside of weird hentai drawings. Sorry I don't share your weird puckered nipple fetish but just because you like it doesn't mean it's normal for everyone around you. By the way she's not just going to magically sleep with you because you white-knighted her creepy vacuous nipples so get off my ass.

Chestlet detected, how many socks do you stuff your bra with?
>>

So that's what you were waiting for, typical attention whore, and a slut to boot

In any case, now that the issues have been sorted, let's get on with the studying - guys only, please - we are more manageable people.

Idk, my nips used to be that way before i went through puberty. They'd only go in when I was chillin though, they'd go out when it got cold.
Anyway are you guys going to argue about nipples all day or are you going to draw?
You're never going to make it.
>>
>>2292154
I wasn't saying it's impossible for nips to look that way, I mean it's a photo, obviously it's how her boobs just are. But it is uncommon in my opinion, and I'll be damned if someone's gonna accuse me of not knowing what real boobs look like when they're actually the spaghetti-toting virgins who've never seen one in real life.

Yet another great study thread, /ic/.
>>
>>2292248
It's not good for anatomy practice but it is good for painting practice! Both are good imo. Also funnily enough one of her nipples has an "innie" like the OP pic.
>>

>>

http://www.embarrassingissues.co.uk/invertednipples.html
10-20% of women have inverted nipples
It's more common than green eyes or red hair.
>>
>>2292253
Skill level shouldn't matter. I've seen some straight up horrifying work in study threads.

Besides, it'd be better to post here so you can compare to others. That's assuming anybody feels like doing it though.
>>
>>2292273
>most
>10-20% of women
>10-20%
>MOST
>>
>>2292279
That's not what you originally said though, you're backpedaling now.
You said it was super weird, uncommon, and an "outlier"
None of those statements are like saying that most women don't have it. Most women also aren't attractive but you didn't feel the need to shitpost about that.
>>
>>2292283
Do you know what the word outlier means? Synonym for not average, in the extreme, uncommon. I also said here >>2292126
>the average nipple
Second post, I said on average. I'm not backpedaling, I ALWAYS meant that it looked weird to me because I've never come across it. I never said anything like it's impossible for her nipples to actually be like that, how the fuck can I when there's the photo right there? You all just put words in my mouth and made insane leaps of logic. The only reason I brought up my own gender is because dude was trying to say it looked weird to me because I just don't know what tits look like and not because it's uncommon but at fucking 20% maximum, it's uncommon enough for me to find it strange, especially since as a straight woman I don't go searching for titties. Go to any porn site, any pose reference site, anywhere you can see vast amounts of tits and the majority of them will not look like that. That's always been my position from the start.
>>
>>2292297
>Synonym for not average, in the extreme, uncommon
Exactly
And 10-20% is 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 women
That's preeeeeeeeetty damn common
So you were wrong

Also
>Go to any porn site,
>the majority of them will not look like that.
No shit, it's porn

and
>Go to ....anywhere you can see vast amounts of tits
>especially since as a straight woman I don't go searching for titties
Why are you making generalized statements about things you just claimed to never look up?
>>
>>2292306
You know what anon? In your opinion I shouldn't find her nipples weird. In my opinion they are weird. Neither of us is going to change the other's mind and it doesn't matter at all. It changes literally nothing about anything. So we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

good children hug and play nice.

get back to work faggots. this is an artwork board, not mediation. draw, post, or get out.
>>
>>2292315
I couldn't clarify that because of the stupid word limit. I do look up pose reference sites at times but not looking for tits specifically, and I don't look up porn sites, but that doesn't mean I've never seen them or shit from them. I mean if I looked for it more often, it would be more likely I'd come across that look, but I don't so I haven't. I do know that on the occasions I have looked at any porn or pose reference sites I never saw it, and I say that makes it uncommon enough. But again, none of this matters, and I'm not posting any more about it.
>>

It looks like you go from one area to another without much structure

Figure out the planes of the face and build it up rather than doing each part separately

Also sort out a method of direction of your lines. Do you want it all one way, or curving with the shape of the face, or have each value a different direction? The more solid you are with your approach, the more finished and deliberate the final piece looks

Just something I put together in the time I had

It's been a long time since I did a proper focused study of a face, so this was pretty fun to do and hopefully some of the likeness is there

I pussied out a little bit on the nose and lips, gotta get confident there too

hopefully if my proportions arent too fucked (save the eyes, they're so much bigger than the reference holy shit) I can start focusing more on shading

>>
>>2295845
how do you remove yourself from symbol drawing mind if i ask
>>
>>2295849
'how I got it that way' lies mostly in the setup of the drawing, i think.

By no means did I set everything up perfectly, but I always aim to get a general shape of the face and head. I haven't read many books on learning to draw, but I'd imagine that at least 99% of them would tell you to set up the head this way.

You can still sort of see where I haven't erased, I have a crossing of two lines to help me get an idea of where and how the face curves, and it helps me set up where I want the eyes.

The rest, as far as getting likenesses similar and for things in general to 'look good', all lies in learning the proportions of the face, and that varies with every person

for your lines, i think you're pressing down way too hard as well

ease up a little, and relax. try not to chicken-scratch as much

again, I'm mostly just regurgitating in a general form what most books will tell you in a much more precise way.

the sticky might be intimidating, but it's definitely worth it to put some time at the very least into what you personally are interested in improving on.

>>

>>
>>2299101
Not bad. You lost some of the character of the face by sort of straightening things out a bit and flattening some of the forms. Would be nice to bring in that richer dark reddish tone from the photo too.

This hair is actually easy to paint. It's already sorted itself into a nice large single mass, and then within that has a couple smaller masses. Keep this main mass present (as you have block it in) and then start to define the smaller masses. Keep in mind the flow of the hair too and how each small mass relates to others and the whole. Careful of the outer contour of her hair because in yours it is wobbly and hesitant. Look for the major curves and angles and get those right.

Very close facial proportions, my man. You've got a good eye for that. Pretty good and accurate detail work. Got the groundwork for the highlighted and darkened skin down, but I'd really push the darks a bit more on her forehead, nose, upper eyelids -- just most of the face is in the correct PATTERN of value, things are in the right place, but... where the skin gets dark you need it a little darker to really match the picture. I'd redden the shadows a bit, too, because your color's not spot-on like your proportions.

Good job, I'm impressed.
>>
>>2299101
>>2300077
Adding to what I just said, I know your real issue is with the hair, but oh well, I hope other anon explained it clearly enough for you. Personally, I can't follow detailed verbal instructions like that, but I was never good with verbal instructions.

Anyway if you are wondering what the next step is for your face painting, after you did what I critiqued, if you want to take it another step towards being realistic, is to start working on the texture of the skin and eyebrows, scrotum, and even the lips some more.

I still don't think it's perfect, but you're a lot closer than before. I bet you're trying really hard to push your perception here now, so at this point you did your best, so I suggest you don't keep squeezing your brain over this one. When you tried your best but it's not perfect, then that's your best and make a new best. This is my last comment. Happy painting.

>>
>>2294167

some imho good advice I got on the matter was to never 'cross hatch' I mean, it has it's uses especially when you are using inks or other one shade mediums, but with pencils you can blend and you can make a wide variety of gradations, instead I was told to use a 45 degree angle on the first pass and if you do another pass do a very very close angle like 42 or 47 (not that you can eye ball that, just trying to give you a visual) also not saying you shouldn't follow the shape either. but think about not doing opposite angles but doing angles so close they blend together, see if it helps more than hatching would.

A lot of potential in this.
You need lighter highlights but careful when tightening it cause it can easily get fucked.
I'd suggest more sharpness/focus in the eyes and the hair falling on her face. Maybe separate the lips a bit more with a hard shadow. In general a very very good start!
>>
>>2301999
>>2302246
Also, the construction can be a bit more tight.
Mark the neck and the rest of the hair, so it doesn't look like a floating head, watch for the distance between the far eye and the nose, angle of the nose, distance between the nostrils, height of forehead, volume of hair etc.
Good luck!

Ummm yeah. If you don't have basic observational skills and control over your medium how are you expected to effectively study something? You can't form a sentence without knowing some vocabulary and grammar. Learning to copy what is in front of you has been the most basic exercise for centuries--students start with copying diagrams or casts before moving on to more complex things.

Is it true that you shouldn't study from photos as the photos has camera distortions.

I read this on concept art.

It seems like you're probably encountering the same problems I encountered. A course of action you should take at this point is to stop drawing from photographs. For now, at least, and focus on life drawing. This could mean getting a mirror, or attending a long-pose drawing class, or going to the library/cafe, or ordering an Asaro Head, or a skull. Or all of them, why not?

The photo is kind of an optical illusion. The camera isn't nearly as powerful as a human eye, and thus you are going to get all kinds of weird distortions that you wouldn't get with study of a real-life head. Somebody on this forum said something to the effect of "the brain doesn't recognize what it doesn't notice". You may recognize a face in that photo (well duh, but you know what I mean), and notice similarities across different photos of faces, but their optical illusion-like distortions will prevent your brain from really learning retaining anything more substantial than the skill of copying (not bad in itself, but you need more). With life drawing study you will be able to memorize and learn all the physical 3d structures that you may not notice in a flat photograph.

Read more: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php/257880-Andrew-Loomis-Technique-WTF-(moved-from-Fine-Art)/page2#ixzz3tBNw3sxR
>>
>>2303305

>camera distortions.

This and the unnatural lighting in a lot of photos I see people 'study', translating 3D forms into 2D is always going to be better than replicating 2D forms. The problem is that if people didnt study from photos whats the alternative? Life drawing sessions aren't exactly easy to attend all the time given time and money constraints.
>>
>>2303295
Pick one thing and focus on that. Could be: construction, values, colour, edges, or something else. Really focus on getting that one thing right, and don't worry too much about the other things. Ask yourself for each stroke you make: why it is the way it is, and if you can change it somehow to make it better. Maybe you are focusing on colour temperature, you will want to shift a colour slightly warmer or cooler or more neutral than the ref. So you start to make decisions and changing things to your needs but always basing those decisions off the source material (so you consider the forms and lighting and so on). You essentially weave design hierarchies into the image so that it works as a whole and you control where the attention in the image is. You need to have basic abilities to observe and draw/paint before you can make these decisions from a place of knowledge instead of a place of ignorance.
>>
>>2303316
You can set up still lifes, do plein air, paint a self portrait from a mirror, get friends or family to pose, copy master paintings etc.

Also I think it's fine to study photos so long as you don't exclusively do that. You should also spend some time making sure to understand the shortcomings of photos so that when you do study one you aren't accidentally building in bad habits (or at least you can reduce it).

you're not observing. Really look at the image, notice the shapes of value and color and try to accurately render them. Don't make anything up. Looks good. The right eye (on the left) seems to pop outward into a bigger shape, which can be a stylistic choice or an error. The hair lines have been done pretty well. Perhaps her forehead is a little bit too small? This is overall an excellent drawing, similar to illastrat's style, I think. Don't mess it up, move onto the next drawing and try harder. The lines on the hair work really well stylistically.

colours feel duller than the reference, which is strange bc it looks like you've colourpicked. or maybe that's the problem; when you blend the samples together they lose a bit of their lustre. don't be afraid to throw around colours a little more violently than the software tells you, I think.
but apart from that your proportions are in good stead & your rendering is lovely & subtle! nice stuff.

>You can't do an effective study until you can do 1:1 copies.
You're literally fucking retarded.
A study is for learning anything related to how to draw/paint. Doesn't matter how fucking perfect you made it, if you didn't learn jack shit from doing the study. And if you didn't, do more until you do. If you learned things but didn't do it perfect, go use what you've learned to make new and better studies.
If it wasn't effective unless you did it perfectly, then literally no one but the people doing it perfectly could improve at art. Even if you're doing studies mainly to become better at doing the study itself, it's effective if you actually learn anything.

am still studying this picture,u can tell there is some trick photography to contrast highlights.head placement is way to off throwing the average artist for a loop whole when studying the female specimen.i resolute pixel framing to 190 % to verify if there was manipulation. the shadow contrast verified it in the graphic automator and there was solid RGB dark edging. this tells me some parts where airbrushed which is usually the case behind a grey background. although beautiful women in the picture.and i understand why the photographer wanted frizzy hair in the picture in photo refinement a nice trick just in case someone tries to infringe professional photography.

>>
>>2316432
nothing, hes a beginner trying to cheat
>>
>>2316638
That happens a lot, but gets better with practice.

It might help to be as specific as possible when measuring and placing landmarks. For example, if you measured an eyeline, know exactly what part of the eye you intended it to cross (top edge of the tearduct, highest point of upper eyelid, etc).

Measure proportions in relation to everything else. Check what lines up vertically, horizontally and diagonally.

For the nose especially, you're not drawing what's actually there. Study up on nose anatomy and you'll better be able to see what to watch out for. IIRC proko has a couple of decent nose anatomy videos on youtube to get you started.

you're good with colors, but you need to work a bit more on your draftsmanship. Foreshortening/perspective and anatomy esp, brush up on your hand studies and don't neglect doing wrists. The nip made me laugh, thank you.

Oh man I made her eyes and forehead so freakin huge
I hope my values at least turned out good, since that was my entire point of the study.
>>
>>2318908
Depends on what you're studying. If you were to study values for example, one practice is to make a value scale of your own and identify what values from your scale are on your image. Next step would be to paint the image thinking exclusively about your value scale and the lighting scenario. Where's the light coming from? Did I guess the right values in the image as compared to my scale? How is the light reacting to the environment? etc. It's not merely copying, it's a dedicated focus on a particular subject.

Much easier to see properly now.

It's not bad, but I feel it's a bit boring, or it's missing something. Maybe take a look at Ashley Wood since he does similar types of loose painterly images with a very restrained palette like that. But you'll see he brings a lot of life and interest to his images by controlling the shapes, edges, and colours a lot.

Also next time I would make sure to compose it more carefully so the top of his head isn't cut off by the edge of the canvas.

I'm assuming this is hte photo you used: http://cdn.taschen.com/media/images/960/pr_rolling_stones_bailey_mick_jagger_1973_22586_1503131001_id_915270.png

In which case you missed out on some things like the bottom of his jaw in yours doesn't have the same depth to it, or his nose in yours is very flat. The lips in the original had more form and colour to them as well.

>>2320893

Great critique, thanks! I'll keep this in mind when I do the actual one. First commission ever so hopefully I can make it work.
