From what I see he tags his stuff properly. It's just tumblr is a site where good artists aren't the ones who get all the notes. The ones who pander get the notes. Notice how most fanarts relating to popular stuff on his blog got loads of notes but his OC stuff barely gets any despite being just as good. That's why note and follower count is pretty meaningless on that site. Tumblr is a pretty shit site in general for promotion in comparison to Instagram or even Twitter.

I don't know if that's the whole story.
Fanart does get more notes, sure, because people look for that stuff. But even my non-fanart stuff often gets more than that guy and I'm not a fraction as skilled as he is so I wouldn't claim it's a quality thing by any stretch. I do generally tag the shit out of my stuff though, while he generally does 2 or 3 tags. Every extra tag you throw on is an added chance that somebody searching that tag sees your stuff. Artists on tumblr is a good one and I see he does that, but even then it'll get buried fast because it's a commonly used tag.

I do think that non fanart stuff almost never gets reblogged though (which makes sense, fandoms have fan blogs that look for this stuff), which will generally kneecap most things pretty fast.

You have to really spend a lot of time in the #sketch and #art tags, liking and scrolling through all the different accounts and commenting. Be nice to people! Do art trades, get invested in other people's work. It's not too hard and once the ball gets rolling it doesn't stop.

I think it's a great little app for getting noticed, and a lot of people juggle both instagram and other profiles at the same time. It's easier to explore than tumblr I think, because tumblr is such a bulky app and it's full of memes and shit. If you want mostly artistic/professional/personal stuff, insta is good.

Im not the guy with the big ass post some of you are complaining about, but you cant go around crying if someone calls your work bad. His post may not be very constructive, but at the very least it should motivate you to do better .
If he were to reply to every post individually, chances are no one would take notice or call him out.

Every time someone replies to everyone's work in a thread there is a massive shit storm, and there is no reason for it. The people that do this shit are giving their opinion, even if its just one word. Some of you should be grateful you got at least one reply, because a lot of people dont get any replies. Its an effective way of cranking out your opinion, even if its not as face to face/personal as you would like it to be.

To me some stuff he put in mediocre is better than stuff in okay or good for example (no I'm not talking about my post). If he'd take the time to give critique on a more personal level (like that other tier anon did in the previous threads), we would at least have some reference points about how he's grading all that shit and actually get some useful information about how to improve.
Right now his posts are completely USELESS to anyone.

I will give you that, he certainly is not really helping anyone, but I do feel the need to point out he is the only one to reply to a lot of people at once with at least: "good", "okay", "bad", and so on. I just feel like in a place where no one is critiquing each other, this guy shouldn't be flamed as much as he is. So I'm the guy you're asking to use references, and while I guess I understand I could do things a lot more reastically when using references, I just don't want to, it's just a style i'm trying to develop. Obviously If i'm gonna draw something I never drew before, I'm going to look at references, but never draw with it, and it's been working fine, not perfect, but fine for me until now.

I will probably use references when I start doing huge illustrations, but for little sketches like that, I prefer not to.

I think he's fine. He's being direct and a bit rude, but it's not like he's flat out insulting people or doing anything too bad. It would be nice if he expanded on some of his reasoning a bit more though because that might be more helpful to some people. Your works looks slightly amateur. But with continuing practice you'll improve. Step outside your boundaries a bit more and you'll be surprised how much you can learn.

It depends on what you mean by "making it". You won't make it as a concept artist, you won't make it on patreon, you may be able to charge commissions but it looks like your style is limited. Maybe go into some sort of graphic design. Tldr, keep improving.
