definite improvement on the lines but the wheels perspective are off on both.remember the minor axis of the ellipse points towards the vanishing point, along the line of the axle

dates can be as far apart as you like

Don't listen to him, he's being a faggot. You seem to be on the right track, although I would recommend to try some different head angles. I know drswing a head in profile is easy, but you have to step out of your comfort zone. Also, less lines. They look hairy and not confident.
>>
>>2286601
Sure. You found a comfort zone and your comfort zone sucks.

Your before drawings are rough, sure, but they have life, you explore different angles and expressions. Your after drawings are rote, you learned to draw something you apparently like(though god knows all the women look awful to me but tastes and all) and you're sticking with it. It's shit.

Unless you just chose a bad page and it's not representative of your general drawing output, but then you should've posted something else.

Also while it superficially appears your lines got better because the right side is more cleaned up, it progresses in a completely wrong direction. The lines that are left alone look like you got lucky instead of being deliberate decisions, as evidenced by the chicken scratched ones. There are actually more hints of confident, long strokes in the before picture than in the after picture.

It feels to me you're too afraid of failure to work on the things you're lacking.

I escaped the nefarious clutches of the weeb shortly after May and have commenced with slow but steady gains considering how lazy I've been getting. I'm satisfied at least.

I also disagree with >>2286952 and also don't think that you can really get that 'stuck' in a comfort zone in the span of a month, two pages isn't really representative of that. I find his November stuff to be better on a technical level. Less cartoonish definitely, but that's not inherently a bad thing.

Yeah, he has a point. The newer page is more clean and confident, but you're doing the same view of the same face over and over. Before, you were exploring more. Maybe the new stuff looks better but you learned more while doing that old stuff.

I definitely agree with you guys, i've been focussing too much on trying to get the same realistic proportions of too similar faces. thanks for the advice.

i started with doing pen only sketches this week so maybe that's taking some of the life out/ adding to feathering that i could get away with in pencil. but that should fix with mileage and thinking more about what i'm going to put down .

Yeah progress is really slowing down...

The prospect of money from doing commissions is so enticing but I feel like they're slowing me down. The time I'm taking to do it is taking away from my personal stuff. But I'm so fucking poor and go to school for something unrelated to art-- how do you guys balance between work and studies? Do you think commissions are an appropriate place to do study-like work?

If there's enough demand, I'd actually go the other way of increasing your prices. If you double your prices and are able to retain half the number of commissions, then you're net 0 money-wise, but you now spend half the amount of time on commissions in a week.

Even if you get half the amount of commissions, and you spend 50% more time on each, you're working 75% of the time you used to and making the same amount of money. That's more tie you can spend on studies.

You might be even more stupid than 6 months ago, if you're comparing those things now

It's can't show any progress if you don't show related type of works, studys with studys, original pieces with original pieces, drawing from imagination with drawing from imagination, referenced drawings with referenced drawings and so on, if you don't youre only feeding delusions of your self image, and that won't help you steping ahead

progress_2015.jpg

When I first started I was always confused as to "How" to draw. I had a method of drawing from reference that produced decent results but I always believed that it was cheating. It was methodical, almost scientific. I 'read' Loomis and Vippu and I didn't understand much of what they were explaining because their methodology was alien and different to my own. I was lost. Then I turned to the w/ic/i

It wasn't until I read Drawing on the Right side of the Brain that I finally understood everything. Every single exercise and skill that book taught, mirrored what I had learned on my own and what I had resented all this time. I had been doing 2+2+2+2+2 to get 10 without realizing that all Loomis and others were explaining was that 2x5=10.

My own breakthroughs

-Drawing from reference is always at the same difficulty (Doesn't matter if picture is upside down or right side up)
-If you keep doing something enough, it becomes automatic
-Everything starts from simplified forms
-Library and sensitivity to shapes increase
-Replace symbols with actual studied knowledge (Mental Library)
-You become better at placing landmarks/limbs. Your mind is telling you unconsciously what looks right or wrong
-If you want to draw from imagination you need to be able to draw from life. Can't copy something in front of you 1:1? how are you suppose to transfer something intangible from your imagination 1:1 as well?
-After learning how to copy 1:1, you begin 'pushing' the poses to convey the 'rhythm', 'force' and 'personality' of the pose to become truer than whats actually there
-You're now consciously DESIGNING and drawing from imagination
-Your style is now developing and visible
-References now become just that, references. Your drawings are your own.

Been drawing every single day and each spread is about a week apart from each other. It was shocking rereading Loomis and understanding everything. I honestly felt like I was dyslexic the first time reading it.
>>
>>2286965
Is this referenced?

And going back to what Bojack said, its all true. If you're struggling with something and hate/dread doing it, (hands/anatomy/figure drawing/backgrounds) then thats an area of weakness you will have to overcome and it does become easier. It may sound strange but being able to see what you're terrible at is actually a blessing. It means you can see what you need to improve on.

It is. I'm worse without reference though I've been trying to get better at it lately. I figured it was better to prioritize learning to draw from observation to see what would stick.
>>
>>2291425
i'd say 3 hours is the most i can do in one sitting. i usually plan to do 1 hour + 30 mins work then take a 30 min or 1 hour break.

another thing is that i divide the day in 2, and aim for 4 hours in the first half, and another 4 later. makes it a bit easier to see if i'm falling behind.

i'm pretty new to putting in this much time so still getting used to it, but it's definitely getting easier and turning into a habit

IC doesn't know what they're talking about. Why are you listening to people on the internet? You're going to take the advice of some 19 year old in a community college who draws anime all day and thinks he's the best shit since bottled water?

Literally, you work on your foundations, specialize in a field, and then spread your wings once you get into that field. I was told that once you get in, you need to set yourself up for the next job. Be humble, above all else. No one wants to work with the dickcheese who thinks he's better than everyone around him, just be appreciative of the fact that you were able to make it into the company and do your work. In the meantime, you know that once the project is over, you're going to be unemployed, so prep for that time. Look to the person in front of you and the person behind you, start developing the skills needed to perform their jobs. Introduce yourself to what you aren't doing (EXAMPLE: modeler < concept artist > animator), you aren't going to have the luxuries you have now, so accept that and work on your art.

Your 2014 is better than your 2015 desu. The only good thing about 2015 is that little bit of rendering and texture that you added.

Both are still meh, your anatomy is sketchy as fuck. style =/= comfort zone, dumbass. comfort zone is only drawing things you have practiced on before, things you're familiar with, kinda like how people always draw humans but can't touch environments or asset design.

it doesn't look like it's helping much. pixelovely is ok if you know your underneath but there's no bone/muscle images to study from. You're doing figure studies without understanding your figure.

>Some folks talking about comfort zone. That's very confusing to me. I really love drawing like this. Any other style is not my taste. Will this attitude eventually cause bad impact on me? I really don't know about this. What's the boundary between muh-style and comfort zone?
Its fine focusing on what you're good at and interested in, but tackling new challenges will make you more well-rounded.

One of the worst things is probably when artists omit things or change the composition (hand hiding, etc.) only because they don't want to leave their comfort zone.

I always wondered why traces were easy to pick up on back from lurking DA, and I finally realized why after I tried to start drawing earlier this week.
It's because of the linework, isn't it? Traced drawings have this thing about them, I guess. The linework doesn't have any logic to it because it's seldom a perfect trace using tracing tools, so you get distortions and waviness that wouldn't occur if the artist understood the physics of whatever it was they were drawing.

Anyway, I wasn't drawing six months ago. Here's the past three days though.

apt analysis. my advice is try more gesture drawing. they may not look as pretty as your other sketches but you will have a better understanding of the shapes that you are drawing. for instance if you see a broom draw a line and a triangle instead of delving right into the details of the object. then you can develop your skills from there. keep a log of all of the combinations of shapes you see and focus on objects that may be harder to discern right off the bat. this will exercise your ability to not care so much and hang your reputation on every little thing you draw as well as help you grow as an artist. good luck nigga

I can see your strife. Sometimes you do it well, and other times... you tried. tbhfam I think you should try practicing your humans more and do more reference drawings from photos, or real life if you can. Try also figuring out how to portray depth without color. Your color theory seems good, but your shadowing and depth need work.

Serious question here.

How long can you go without drawing before it becomes detrimental to progression?

I stopped drawing because I didnt have enough time to devote to it and I didnt want my art to skew badly, so I wanted to re-approach drawing with more clear priorities and goals.

Did I fuck up? Its been 3 months and all I do is doodle.
>>
>>2299592
Won't focus on first two because it's early any you've improved.

2014.
Demon horns need definition and detail
Your wings are inconsistent and seem shifted
Hair needs detail and refining less rigid, it's hair it's allowed to flow
The left arm behind the body looks odd at this angle
Focus on a singular light source first before using another (for consistency)

2015 #1
Compared to grey, dark cats body seems shifted and looks detached from the rest of the peice
Dark cat hand is huge, try and define the fingers
Shoes seem much too bulky

2015 #2
It's a work in progress so I won't judge
>>
>>2299638
Please do judge the last picture! It's been weeks since i touched it. Critique would help. Also thanks.
>>
>>2299592

like the other anon said in kinder words, you can't draw. you aren't a good draughtsmen (yet)

BUT that is all stuff that is easily sorted by practicing the right things:

life drawing
still life drawing
figure drawing
human proportions and (eventually) anatomy
construction of complex 3d forms using primitives
and more

some stuff to think about. I bet you could be really good in a month or two if you practiced the right things.

The sticky has some actual useful stuff in it too.
>>
>>2299642
I've been doing still life drawings. I will post a more recent picture in a few days.
>>
>>2299640
I like the background what I mainly notice are the foreground characters

Orange
Legs seem stiff as if he's doing a jig focus on a lead leg to compliment the front view of the guy and reduce the angle of the other

Yellow
She seems to be kneeling try raising her to the guys level to simulate the same direction of motion
Her lead leg is much to bulky compared to the other
Her cape is very sharp and blocky. Smooth it and use a folding effect for detail and depth

If you seriously think the second one qualifies as a polished turd you really need to rethink what the fuck polishing means.
I just find the darker lines and presence of some shadows more appealing, anatomy notwithstanding. The anatomy is just barely more refined in later editions anyway, besides the head being a better size.

Apologise if this is the completely wrong thread but:

I am a total noob that will be throwing at least 2h a day into drawing once the New year starts. My plan of progress is to just use pencil + paper until i get the basics to a competant level. Then obviously into anatomy and forms/expressions etc

Do i then move onto digital drawing?

You might be practicing wrong.
Dedicate at least 2 hours (probably more) to drawing hands everyday for a month or untill it clicks. This means drawing hands from every position so you can build a image data base in your head. Rinse and repeat until you become a master.

>>2289771

>>
>>2308521
You aren't studying enough. Copy reference then put it away and draw from imagination. Repeat until you're happy with your imagination drawings.
>>
>>2295952
It's mainly because you don't worry about line depth and shape when you're tracing. Even a perfect tracejob with great linework will always look 'wrong', and flat. It also tends to have things like fov which leads to all kinds of funky perspective errors.

Never trace. You can use whatever references you want, but never trace. It accomplishes nothing.
>>
>>2303856
Look up the individual muscles of each component of your hand. You're drawing them as whole objects rather than multiple muscles connected together. You've got like, 10 strokes in your hand when you should have 100.

is it the anatomy thats too fucked up or just looks too generic? what specifically? and dont give me the ic answer its all shit study everything
>>
>>2309024
It just looks like you have no idea what animals look like or what makes something look cool. Like you paint it realistically with a texture overlay and stuff, but if you look at real animals they look nothing like that. Look at a crocodile's teeth and see how they are visible when the mouth is shut. You don't just have the bottom teeth showing. He basically looks like a mix of what people thought dinosaurs looked like in the 1800's with vaguely human-ish features then is painted as if he is a fake red leather couch.

Have you ever studied the skull of any dinosaur? Or living reptile? Have you looked at what features modern animals have that make them interesting? Their scales don't look like the leathery thing you did. They may have patterns, spikes, horns, different types and sizes of scales, subtle colour shifts etc. So yeah it's generic and simply put, lacks anything of interest. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but the expression "polishing a turd" is relevant.
>>
>>2309037

You kinda goofed on the left one by using those ugly ass texture brushes in the sky but its way more interesting than the lake (river?).
Take the sky from right, turn it green and put it on the left one

Fighting through medication and TBI's has got me to here so far. I hate using it as a handicap but some days i just cant make whats in my mind travel to my hand and other times i just forget fucking everything. I feel like im... progressing, though.

AM I PROGRESSING? CAN YOU TELL?
>>
>>2304319
I wish I had a super high-def single-shot of the top right. The ammount of times I need to textually display that exact emotion is embarrassing.

Everyone has a 100,000 bad drawings in them, the quicker you get them out the better artist you will be
>>
>>2292634
I really like your drawings anon, I tried to copy them and mine look like shit. Keep going.
>>
>>2290806
Really amazing. I'm definitely at the place you were. I've always just figured it out myself without bothering to properly study. I'm starting to practice every day now however I have a job and something that resembles a social life. How the hell did you manage four hours a day? Are you at university?
>>
>>2309046
Looks good, but basically no real progression other than the obvious time committed. Post something that you spent the same amount of time on.
>>
>>2311174
I was about to say you got horribly worse but then I saw the newest date was the first one. Good progress anon (you're still symbol drawing though).

Yeah, I feel the same way. Basically, my progress has been getting to the point where I can actually work on something for more than an hour before giving up. Here's something else I did today.
>>
>>2311936
not that person, but i'm currently doing 10 hours a day. i'm doing part time work + sacrificing 95% of my social life, which as an introvert i'm not finding it too rough to live without. (also have 3 years of university coming up to spend that whole time drawing)

if you want to get good fast you can't do it without sacrificing other things, be that sleep, social life, video games, money etc. and if you still don't have a lot of time, try to be smart with the time you have, making sure you're always pushing yourself to learn more
>>
>>2311963
also remember that there are people working as artists 9 to 5. that's 8 hours a day they put in just on work. and these are the guys you need to catch up to and compete with for jobs

i haven't been able to draw as much as i'd like lately because i've been focusing on getting back into the swing of classes/finals, but hopefully there's at least a small bit of improvement here.
might post again with looser and more stylized art later once i finish the piece i'm currently working on.

Well style isn't just a fashion statement, it's something that you continuously work on just like the fundamentals and foundations, you're exaggerating in your own personal language based on your aesthetics. And for "muh-style" is when it's apparent that you made a mistake but refuse to take action on it excusing it that you purposely done it, comfort-zone is when you choose not to move further with what you're already doing and that you will stay in one place.

man stop memeing people so hard

the left pic couldn't even be considered as started

in the right pic his main mistake was using dark colors, high pinks and dirty grays. if he used a lower palette instead it'd be much pleasing to look at

it's really hard to make a face with believable colors. anyone can make an orange, green or purple human. in the second pic at least he tried to study color besides shape
