So, we had this pic (pic related), in last thread, but you, Firez, chose to post that one for drawthread header, for some reason. Well, that's just great, isn't it.
Hidden hands, boring gesture, plain face, just lines.

Why does people feel the need to complain about the OP picture of every fucking thread on /ic/? it's literally nothing more than a picture to put in the OP. No one gives a shit, >>2274113 it's not like you will get world famous because your image is in the OP. If you have time to be a salty fucking mongrel, you're not spending enough time gitting gud.
>>
>>2274117
lol, I don't post here, I only lurk, but I just remembered that being one of the more beautiful posts in the last thread, and as such, why not be the header, instead of that monstrosity. I mean, the pic I posted has elegance, some sort of a story, nice colours- it's interesting to look at, it's more than an obvious practice so to say.
The Firez one is everything but that. If you want to raise the quality of the draw threads, maybe start with how you advertise or introduce them.
>>
>>2274130
Lurk more, nobody cares what's on the OP unless they do it out of a funpost.
>>
>>2274131
I have lurked for about two years actually, but if you want to change /ic/ for the better, then the smallest changes do make a difference. As such, putting a higher level header- this means that nonbeginners know that there is someone better here that can help them. Also if you put, subjectively ofcourse, the best picture in the last thread as the header, this can be seen as a little bonus, which would make people post more- and post better stuff even.
>>
>>2274135
I've used my own drawing before and they where absolutely terrible yet nobody made a fuss about it they continued posting and went on their way like usual despite having way better artists than I; to reiterate nobody cares.
>>
>>2274137
well keep on trucking then, but it just seems that there are simple ways to boost this place. Such as the draw thread template was, which pointed out the posting rules very quickly, but people just kinda slooged over it and didn't start using it.
>>
>>2274113
>>2274135

First time I agree with a thread pic discussion. We don't want newcomers coming to this board, looking at this shitty animu sketch on the cover of the Draw Thread and thinking "yes, this is where I should post my shitty animu drawings".

This is not representative of the thread or the quality we should be aiming for.
What, you can't put your ego aside for one moment to choose a better pic for the thread?
>>
>>2274163
>"yes, this is where I should post my shitty animu drawings".

>Muh sekreet cool kidz club!

This is an age old argument hence the reason why the animu threads started in the first place.

>>
>>2274171
Please fucking do. Firez was such a fag starting this thread, while the other one was only on page 2. I know it was in auto sage but it still had time for way more discussion and there were people who had just posted shit. He just did it so he could beat anyone else to it and it's painfully obvious. Besides there are people who filter trips, I would prefer the op be neutral so people can see it. I also don't want the entire thread to be shit up with people arguing about him and we can already see it starting.
>>
>>2274176
Then don't expect to ever reach a rank of "best art and intellectual conversation humanity has to offer".
As someone once said, don't remember who, "If you are the smartest person in the group, you are in the wrong group." The best way to get better is to be amongst people who are better than you- how does this come into play? Well ofcourse in the dialogue that is held between the members, which is horrible here. Circlejerking and calling eachother fags is stagnation, so enjoy that if you like it I guess. All of the useful input that is in this place, is always well put into words, isn't "herpy" and is thought out.

Dear Troll: I'm glad you accepted the fact that you don't draw at all, even so I suggest trying to spend your time in a productive way, your sorry attempts at trolling me and others, samefagging, and acting like a brat are just not productive and you will probably regret it later when you stop being underage.

The only reason I sometimes make DTs is because the old ones are far into auto-sage, there is this tacit agreement of using our own drawings therefore I use whatever I'm doing at the moment for that purpose, I've repeated this several times hopefully you will get it by now.

Also fwiw OP is something I did from imagination, using a cellphone, during lunchtime, I also started working in a new song a song and even now I'm practicing my 2nd language (incidentally thanks to you).

So if you hate me that much try to come up with something better than what I'm currently doing or just continue going down through your pathetic path.

Regards!

>>
>>2274208
The thing is, if the image is just the title, no one cares, but if you are going to display a drawing, chose a good one, one to represent the thread.

>>2274221
There isn't "a troll" picking on you, Firez, and no one cares if you made this sketch with your asshole, and I wouldn't be surprised if you told me you did. You need to understand this is the face of the thread, and your ego doesn't let you not use it to display your shitty drawings. That's what people are calling you out on.
I am saying this as a guy who didn't understand people hating on you until now.

This, so much. I've gotten into huge arguments with people defending him only to realize what I thought was aloofness in the face of haters was actually all ego. When I saw how he deflects real feedback the same as shitposts I finally understood, and I regretted ever sticking up for him. I still wouldn't be surprised if it actually was a troll who posted this op instead of him but it's not exactly out of character and it just serves to ruin the thread every single time. If he actually cared about these threads as much as he claimed he would put ego aside as you said and let someone else make threads, since it causes so much trouble, but I guess he thinks he has a point to prove.

>if you are going to display a drawing, chose a good one, one to represent the thread.
The tradition before we even had the animu thread was to slap the words Draw Thread on whatever you were working on, not pick something to represent some arbitrary quality for the thread. We're all shit here anyways.

As long as we have the copypasta, a link to the previous thread, and draw thread in the title and the image so that people can find it easily, it doesn't matter who makes the new thread. You're free to make the next when this starts autosaging. I don't know about this thread, but the old thread was deep into autosaging the last time friez op'ed. If that's consistent, you have plenty of time to make the next new thread.

We've been through this shitposting cycle forever now. He won't drop the trip, and he won't avoid making a draw thread. Having this redundant argument everytime it happens is more on the rest of you, as firez hasn't done anything different than h! would have done when he made 90% of the ops.

>chose a good one, one to represent the thread.
Where were you in the last draw thread? That one didn't even have a drawing and here you are getting rustled at the site of a trip.

>>
>>2274221
firez i said this before, your music isnt good. focus on your art if you think youre ever going to make it.
>>
>>2274530
Are you going for realism? If so, it's still too undefined in most places, and cartoonish in others, like the buildings. A lot of the people seem stunted, but it's hard to tell whether that's because their bodies are actually too short or their heads are just too big. The perspective is questionable right now, the right side looks like it's tending towards a fish-eye curve. Overall looks pretty good so far but depending on what kind of style and finish you're aiming for, it might need more tightening up.

Well, hate to say it but your drafstmanship still looks pretty unskilled. I don't feel this is great blend of stylization informed by reality, you'll just need more practice. I'd recommend you study anatomy breakdowns, perspective, and foreshortening to bring your construction up to a more solid level.

Hey, as with anything in art, persistence is key! In all seriousness though, glad I could help.
When you're looking at anatomy breakdowns and foreshortening, an important factor is going to be "drawing through" figures, like the dotted lines in pic related. Basically you give yourself guidelines that show the entire form, then just keep the clean contour lines after you've gotten the shape down. Good luck, anon.
>>
I feel like maybe I need to do a study, but nothing in the study thread really interested me. Anyone have a suggestion? It doesn't have to be a person. It doesn't even have to be something real, I'll cobble together references or something, I need to practice that too.

Hi. I painted the image you are referring to. It wasn't actually the header image of the thread. I also started the previous draw thread. An image with text that says "Draw Thread" is fine. Maybe a cartoon too. The one that we currently have is appropriate. You don't need a special image to make a draw thread, you just need an image that tells you what kind of thread you're posting in, so people have an easy time finding the draw thread in the catalog, or on the first page. In most cases, the image is secondary to the links, which are very important, and provide crucial resources for people who have never drawn, want to learn, are learning, or just forgot to bookmark that one link they liked so much.

I shouldn't be making responses like this. I am sorry for taking up space in the thread.
>>
>>2274716
The placement of the highlight and the shadow core on the face of the building makes it look convex, despite that it would appear your intention was to make a concrete/sandstone rectilinear building. To remedy this, remove the highlight and tone down the reflected light on the opposing side of the face. Also, the stairs are flat and lack depth, when compared to the texture heavy and perspectival beach contour (looks good). Let the region of the stairs that are behind the foundation of the building they are leading up to, be cast in a soft shadow, and maybe remove the ambient glow around the lower window adjacent to the stairs on the back building. The little tower, although I understand its compositional intention, to contrast the large and not quite wider than it is tall building with a small, taller than it is wide building, looks more like, pardon my candor, a dog's penis than a stone pillar with a beige roof. Textures mostly aren't working that well because your colors appear poorly thought out, rushed, disorganized, or even lazy. An example of lazy could be that you used the same saturated gold hue from the highlights on the green brush for the moss creep on the wall. The effect at the bottom portion of the building looks like fire being sprayed from a thrower, and the rest looks like gold leaf that was brushed off of another project and fell onto this one. It doesn't have depth and rests on the surface of the picture rather than being embedded in the face of the wall. Even making it darker would help, although I would suggest a different color of patina, a fuller texture that compliments possibly scattered suggestions of stonework. You nailed the light on the roof, oddly enough. It's the perfect value when set against the value of the sky. Clouds are not random, they are self-similar. Also, the horizon line relative to the observer's frame of reference is pleasing.

I'm trying to design a sort of organic, ornate looking mask like face, but I can't seem to be able to land on a design that I actually like. On the other hand, I would like it to be relatively clean, and "statuesque" in look, but at the same time, I want it to look organic in nature, and I keep failing at combining those two aesthetics.

I would appreciate any tips.

>>2274876

What so you mean by this exactly? Im not satisfied with the lips yet
>>
>>2274885
I'm not >>2274876 but I agree with him. The lips right now are modeled as if they're on the same plane as the rest of the face; on flat cylinder. That's not right. From that angle we should be seeing the full volume of the lips, especially the lower since the view is a downward angle. The far corner of the mouth is off as well as a result of being coplanar.
>>
>>2274885
Don't you see the wrinkles are flat.
The shading of them is also flat, suggesting they are either sharp corners or just flat.
They don't look round at all.

That is a pretty sweet ass design. The Bloodborne thing ended up being too much invention, not enough 'study', this seems like it'd work out better. I'll sketch him in a little while, I'm supposed to be asleep right now.
>>
>>2274897
This guy's showing you the problem. It stars with the philtrum, the divot under the septum.yours is drawn to the right side of her face, as if her mouth is shifted rightward while she frets or ponders something difficult. It's as if you drew it wrong after laying out the nose and mouth. If she's really fretting and pulling her mouth to the side, there'd be cheeks tightened, muscles along the crease of the upper lip to nose, under the right eye...

However, you could fix the philtrum and the lips would stand fine. Your actual mouth is fine and lays correctly on the face, the lips either need a slight moderation of the heavy shadow between them, or a bit more modeling of them to make it look like they're slightly parted. Soften the 'peaks' on the upper lip going into the philtrum, though.

No, your actual problem is that your eyes are cocked to each other. The left eye lays at a significantly more rotated position than either the right eye, or reality allows, short of reconstructive surgery. Whoever did this side-by-side tried to show you some of that, and they've more or less corrected the lay of the upper lid. I think they closed the outer edge aa bit too much, and he destroyed the shit out of the under-eye cheek modeling you did for no good purpose, but they're also right about the way you rendered the bridge of the nose going into the lower forehead and brow ridge, that's part of what canted the eye.

All of these things can be fixed, or accounted for in a redraw.

Latin term, comes from the same root as Philter, like a perfume or scented oil... The story goes that the Romans used to put the perfumes they wanted to smell under their own nose, so everyone found everyone else pleasant to smell, even though they probably weren't.

I teach art, so I try to use the right terms most of the time, but I didn't want to overwhelm the artist I was critiquing. Better to get one or two terms at a time.
>>
>>2275148
>What is wrong with it?
Not him but, everything. You don't know how to draw well enough to make this look as impressive as you want it to be. The only advice I can really give you right now is to just finish it, make it look as good as you can, then move on and work harder on your studies, namely observational drawing.
>>
>>2275148
I hate to sound like a dick, but 'it's not really an X therefore the thing you're finding fault with isn't really wrong', is the sort of bullshit copout that you get over in your first year at art school, or you get out of art school. You wanted an ape-like beast. You draw an ape, then you modify it. If you want larger lower canines, then you draw a gorilla's, and you modify the jaw, tooth size and placement to accommodate the larger tusks. I'd suggest smaller incisors and premolars, or a longer/wider jaw and bite, or a third option would be to cant the incisors forward and push them outward in a curve... but you start with the ape. Make a jaw too much bigger and you need to adjust the neck, and the shoulders, then the ribs and so on throughout the body, depending on ridiculously you enlarge shit.

Her lower legs look like they're closer at the knees than heels, which makes it look like she's pinching something flat rather than straddling a cylinder.

if you extend the lines formed by her shin bones through her heels, they should cross. Right now they cross in front of her knees.

This looks good, my only advice other than cleaning it up with more refined brush strokes, is that I think it would look MUCH better if you lightened up the sky. Lighten the sky maybe 10% or so, then you'll have more tonal range to work with on your building. You could further the contrast between the light striking the right side of it and the shadowed left side.

TLDR the sky is 99% of the time brighter than the brightest element in the picture.

don't worry about time. you're thinking about how light is interacting with the apple which is good, but you aren't making use of the full value range. You're spending too much time looking at the canvas and not enough at the apple. The more time you spend looking at the apple the more it will reveal itself to you, and you'll be able to see the apple for what it really is easier in future studies. I can tell by the study that there would be shitloads of good subsurface scattering and really nice glaze from the bounce light but you aren't putting it there. It's like you're trying to tell me about this super hot chick you fucked but when it comes to details you're only telling me about how great her shoulder plates are.

I like the colors and the lighting on the face. The construction looks shoddy on the gun and in some other places. It's interesting that your lighting is way better than the construction; for me it's the opposite.

The color palette for the floating spirit is wonderful, by the way, but if emits light directionally shouldn't there be more variance on the roof intensity?

Hi. Longer first crit here. Some more things I noticed when attempting to revise the painting on my own.

-horizon lines should be more pronounced
-water should contrast the sky more. depends on the mood you're trying to strike. the mood now feels vaguely hospitable and uninterested. if you have a dark sky and bright waters you could imply or plainly illustrate a hurricane, and the building suddenly becomes either a safe haven, because in 20 seconds you're about to be tossed around by the wrath of god and you have nowhere else to go, OR the place could be completely dangerous because you were warned about the hurricane but just had to see it for yourself at that old creepy castle on the end of the peninsula. if you have a light sky, and dark water, you could imply a sense of safety from the building, dark waters would imply depth, so maybe it's filled with high tech monitoring equipment and the farthest outpost for you and your marine biologists to gather up before a dive. and the stubborn bureaucratic new guy at headquarters doesn't approve of the diver's cavalier's ways, even though they've been doing it their whole life after their father died in that tragic accident 50 miles up shore you see my point though.
-lighting on the mounds need more contrast. if those are mounds I need a direct light, a shadow core and a cast light, no exception. same goes for the water. if the direction of the light is from above, there need to be a shadow of minimum length that the terminator on it would not be seen within the frame of this image. the only time would the shadow be as diffuse would be if it were low light, while this light seems midday at latest.
-your midground shadows (the shadows on the building and mounds) could be about 40 points darker (brightness slider in ps) and the difference between the contrast of your midground objects and your background objects could be exaggerated as well.

women: why are your bodies so complicated?

perspective is fucked, ye
>>
>>2276675

A couple things

-remove color filter. it was popular about seven years ago on fashion ads, because gen X, who were entering pivotal points in their careers were growing reminiscent of the 60s popular imagery: polaroids, and light leaks. why were they growing reminiscent? because they were having kids, talking to their parents more, and thinking about their parents lives more. I don't think that's why you put a color filter on it, and I think you put the color filter on because you saw it as a trend and wanted a quick like or two.
-finish painting everything below the neck and the hair. you did not put nearly as much effort into the hair as you did the nostril of the nose.
-I have stated previously that exaggerating the size of a woman's eyes can be pleasurable. in this instance it is giving me the opposite feeling. she appears more alien like. I also would hope you fix, pay attention to, and work on in general more closely the woman's left eye, which you seem to have left in chicken-scratch mode, much like the state you left the foremost outside ridge of the ear. you accurately distributed the values of the ear, which are convincingly gradual and quite subtle, but you leave the ridge of it looking like a simple 63% circle brushstroke, rather than an ear.
-I will put as much effort into my criticism of the shoulders, the collarbones, the crease of the left arm and the chest, the hairline, the outline of the back of the hair, the highlights on the forehead, and almost all of the value transition with the exception of the tear through to the nasal bridge and the adjacent crease of the lower eyelid as you did.

simply put, although i would say you have made many mistakes, you are at least consistent in that all of your mistakes are essentially the same mistake, so if you fix it, you will be that much closer to achieving perfection. you're not as far as you might think from this critique, and when you get there, you won't need color filters.

because you're trying to shoehorn them into your understanding of the male's anatomy. I can see you are making the same marks that you make to accent the musculature and creases in the male's body as you are the females. Solution: make your creases simpler, and give the mark a more gradual taper. we like have tight, consricting marks on men because it means there is more muscle and mass underneath the skin, or at least, there is very little between the muscle and the skin, low amount of subcutaneous fat deposits. this is what is considered masculine. biologically it is because they have more testosterone, since testosterone decreases body fat and increases muscle mass. on women, we expect to see the opposite, we expect to see the results of having less testosterone and androgen and more estrogen. we expect women to be softer, having a little more fat. we don't expect their muscles to be visible like a man's are. if you give her too many creases, well, then she just looks obese, and that's also not desirable.
>>
>>2276694
yeah it requires confidence to shade female bodies, i dont have that yet. i'll get back to that sketch in the next days
>>
>>2276701

Not a single part of my commentary was about you lacking confidence. You seem to have plenty of it, given how effortless your hatching is and your very clear mastery of fundamental human anatomy. Very few of your lines are awkward in the tell-tale manner that people who lack confidence generally draw their figures, the shoegazing postmodernists of the earth, which I doubt you are one of. You said, "women: why are your bodies so complicated?" My response was simple; because they aren't complicated. Men's bodies are complicated, not women's. If you want to make a body look like a woman's, you simplify it; less creases, less definition, more gradual tapering, more rounded forms and more gentle features.

I think the idea and what you're going for with the mechshit is shit and generic, not the quality of your work.
It seems you have a pretty good grasp of your fundies. Only real issue I see with them is the pose itself. What's going on with those arms? If she's walking through, her right arm wouldn't be in that position but her hand would be twisted - her palm facing behind her and the top of the hand facing us assuming she went in right hand first to pull that open.

I don't know what's going on with her left hand though. She also looks slanted like she's about to tip over or something. Shoulders are a little small too don't you think?

if you want to start writing more cohesive, original ideas for your drawings the best advice I can give you is try to make yourself laugh.

write down a word, can be anything. Rabbit, running, spaceship, pretty. Then ask yourself questions about it

>Rabbit
>buckteeth
>has a lot of sex
>why would a rabbit have a lot of sex
>why would something with buckteeth have a lot of sex
>jumping
>sex while jumping?
>easter bunny
>who/why would the easter bunny have sex [with]?

and just keep writing and asking questions until either you come up with a funny answer to one of those questions, or you come up with a funny question to ask in your illustration.

That's usually how I do it. Either the question is a funny one to ask or the answer is a funny one to give.

And don't try to fool yourself. If something makes you genuinely laugh you deserve to make it because it is honest to your creative process, but if you haven't found something good enough yet keep digging until you do.

Something you have fallen victim to which I see on this board all the time is the idea that you have to create your own world in your artwork. It's not enough to draw a lion, it has to be YOUR lion. It has to have robot legs, and jetpacks, and a hammer from the god Khul'Hoth that only the true lion can wield.

don't do that. Make the joke dictate the design. If you have come up with a situation the lion can be in that demands he have the hammer of Khul'Hoth then go for it but nobody is that funny. It takes years of practice to be able to have a joke that consists of 3-5 parts and demands that kind of specificity. If you don't have a clever idea behind it it's honestly not worth doing unless you are just studying.

So try writing something like that. Keep writing until you laugh then go from there.
>>
What is NOT mechshit? Can you provide an example of what you personally find to be just mech? Regarding this picture is it the idea behind it that you think is generic or just the fact that it's a robot lady in some sort of post apocalypse? Because I'll agree, PA is well trodden but for good reason obviously. As for the robo lady, I just want to tell a story that involves robots, one of them happens to be a woman.

For the pose I agree and I'm probably going to re draw her. I ripped her out of an old picture and thus the pose she was in doesn't work in this new context.

Holy shit I just did what I hate when people do: accepting advice and then immediately disregarding it with explanations that shrug off the advice.
didn't mean for it to come off like that.
>>
>>2276853
What I mean is the design of the mechshit. It's almost identical to that asian guy who posts here sometimes - the one who got fucked over by Feng (Long? Lon? I forget). Except his is done with terrible photos. And it's not just him, a lot of artstation and facebook artfags do the same shit. It all looks so samey. So don't take it personally, it's just my distaste for that "style" of garbage.

It's hard to speak for the "story" behind the drawing. It could be generic, but if it's what you want then that's all that matters. This isn't literature or cinema - only so much can be conveyed in a single frame. I do think there should always be the lingering presence of restraint when doing these type of "story" paintings. I feel sometimes the inexperienced will try to cram as much shit into it to tell a story. Just stick with the necessities, but this is all besides the point and not related to what you asked.
>>
>>2276840
This is good advice.

Maybe it's different but I feel like this mirrors a design methodology I sometimes think about. Like when someone is designing a character, they say to themselves: "how can I make this character design interesting?" So they immediately try to make up designs that are "cool" or "badass" and it winds up hyper generic, like a guy with a sword in a black outfit and dual pistols or something. I often think you have a good start to a design on your hands if your first reaction to it when it pops in your head is "that's fucking weird and I don't like it."

I don't really know where I'm going with that, just something I thought about.

Also, about world building. I'm not sure I see what you're getting at as to why that's a negative.

But anyway, I'll definitely keep this method in mind.

>Also, about world building. I'm not sure I see what you're getting at as to why that's a negative.

it's not a negative, it's just neutral. it's empty design. use this picture by jaime jones as an example of empty world building. when you strip away the millions of little details and look at the concept as a whole, it can be summed up as "giant". He took it as far as the kernel for an idea, and then threw some horns on it, made it furry, and called it a day, rather than exploring any of the myriad possible scenarios and associations you could make with a giant.

i think its hard to talk about this without providing my own example of what i think a good concept is.

>>2276278
is one I did today. The concept I took is the phrase "Bone to pick" and I extrapolated that into a lineup at a police station that involved a skeleton. Then I decided on who would be the victim of a crime by a skeleton and I decided a lock that was unlocked was funny, and that the idea of a skeleton key that was a real skeleton was also funny.

So "Bone to pick" and "Skeleton key" were the kernels of ideas I used to build into the concept using the writing method I described in my first post.
>>
>>2276868
I did some searching, is it someone who got fucked over by Feng Zhu? I couldn't find any other Feng, either way I'm not sure who you're talking about.

Can you think of an artist who does sci fi stuff who's designs are good and one who's designs are bad?

I don't take this shit personally, no worries.

I see what you mean, this is why I often try to figure it out for myself rather than ask people vague "how make good art!?" esque questions.

His mechanical design sensibilities remind me of what you did and I know I've seen it from other artists in the past trying to replicate his style or whoever "started" it.
