The first thing that jumps to the viewer's eye is the bold use of color; it is bright, vivant, and a firm statement in red and green - not a statement unkind, but purely comple/imentary. The pale skin of the subject lapses in and out of focus, struggling against the stronger hues, bolstered only by the subtle orange of the cigarette, which is itself even more gently supported by the red speck of fire. The white of the cigarette is lost in the swarm of green, much as the whites as a whole are torn apart by the other more plentiful colors. The small eyes of the subject drive home the hopelessness of the composition. Though the only truly dark shapes are the lines which delineate humanity from inhumanity, indeed, which impose humanity on inhumanity (esp. i.e. e.g. the curve of the jaw, which pierces through the cigarette), the piece overall is more somber than one would first guess at a distance. 1/10 loomis
