1) I think building discipline is the most important starting off in my opinion. Start off by disregarding all shame and drawing anything you want. Don't pay attention to whether it matches up to any sort of professional standard, just do it. You'll eventually develop a habit for drawing.

2) As you grow more confident, that's when you should start looking into improving; sometimes that improvement will come naturally by developing taste for the kind of art you're attracted to. Gather a collection of artists/things you like. Ask yourself, "Why do I like this so much? What can I take away from this?" then figure it out and apply it to your art.

3) Studies are important, but if you're only focused on the technical aspect of art it's gonna be soulsucking. My personal rule is quality over quantity: one really good long study is better than 10 half assed ones. Hint: if your brain doesn't hurt by the end of it, it's not a real study.

4) Be good to yourself. Any kind of artistic skill is weird because it's a mix of self-hatred and complete narcissism, and you'll get bouts where the former is overwhelming. You have to be really self-aware at points. If you're having a bad art day, you gotta decide for yourself if you're gonna take a break or bootstrap it. Do what's best for yourself.

5) Have fun. Try to find artist friends and draw stupid shit together. Join a community. Draw fanart for that thing you like. Draw your waifu/husbando. Draw that webcomic idea you've had since middle school. Who cares, life's too short to be embarrassed. Put yourself out there.

How I did it was by learning to draw something that I like. Some people love dragons, some people love cars, or unicorns, fucking what-ever. I love cats, so I drew nothing but cats in different positions and angles. Googled images for reference, googled drawings of cats, read guides on how to draw things from basic shapes, and drew cats so much that I got better and my hand became more steady. Eventually when I transitioned into drawing other things, that knowledge and ability sort of just transferred over.
