I mostly do large scale pixel arts myself. I need to work on shading, though. The images lack detail and look flat.
I don't sprite often, but when I do, I usually do it NES styled. Here's a cross post of something I did.

Retro City Rampage has inspired me to do some more pixel work, but I'm feeling a bit lazy atm. Got a good idea for one.

I used to post pretty regularly on the Pixellation forums and got a lot of good critique. I lurk a lot, watch regular art tutorials for.techniques...and lots of practice and endless tweaking.

It's easy, particularly at first to get discouraged at the output but don't worry about the output because no matter how good you get on some level you're probably always going to find fault with it, and the better you get, the better you get at finding fault. Goddamn curse I tells ya.

I often lose heart looking at something like this, where it would take me longer than I could imagine. And it's really difficult to tell how long things should take.
Things should take however long it takes you to get them done. I haven't kept track in forever.
That being said, it's always useful to try to find shortcuts to speed things up.I take a very painterly approach and slap down blobs of color to define basic shapes and volumes and then comb over detail as necessary. A lot of budding artists tend to take an approach more like an illustrator would, and in this medium that's necessarily going to take longer.
Also start simple and small. I got more into animating and spent a lot of time trying to improve my sense of motion than I did on detail and that produced some interesting results.
The pic attached took a few hours to get the basic shapes down and a little longer to add the simple shading.
But don't get discouraged, because real talk, everybody sucks ass at first. If it's something you enjoy doing then just keep at it with a mind to improve and you probably will.
Don't be afraid to fuck around or produce garbage. I'm showing the best of my stuff, but I keep everything to remind myself that some days I'm better than others, and also that I'm better than I used to be. I have old drawings from high school laying around that are

Also bear in mind that I'm a grown-ass man and I've been at this for a pretty damn long time.
