Right, back to it!
Why were ancient painters just generally shit? Nowadays we have 16 year olds who can speedpaint a photorealistic image in like 9 and a half seconds, but the fuckers back then couldn't even
get decent detail down.

Live models most likely

That's really interesting actually because in ancient monotheistic cultures like Sumeria it was considered extremely taboo to attempt to create a visage of a divine being, who would otherwise be completely ineffable,
but young children may not know about any of that, and then create a statue of God as their very first work of art,
and I suppose just as my own parents saved artwork I had made in school which I considered worthless, but which they held with enough value that it is all which remains of that time
you better start painting some more, faggot

No, it's a legitimate question, and if it's so retarded it should be easy to answer, right?

I only really found him recently, but people consider him the first photorealist painter, even though he didn't really consider himself such.

Unrecognized post. Glad somebody else had a big sigh at random moronic statement guy too.

No. Just no.
Your affirmation of modern supremacy is incorrect. Your disdain for the ancients is inaccurate. Your general point is just plain ignorant.
The true zenith of truly amazing detail painting isn't even close to the current day. Any art historian would laugh before arguing for either the Dutch school in the late sixteenth/seventeenth century, or the general proliferation of amazing painting in the late nineteenth. The current day has too many more effective and efficient methods of image creation, so painting is de-incentivized.
As for the ancients? Well assuming you mean actual ancients and not just "folks from a long time ago," lets take anybody from later periods; Rembrandt, Constable, even your straw 16 year old. Take them, and force them to paint on papyrus, or stucco walls, or calfskin. Force them to use paints and brushes that could only generously be described as primitive. Brushes that a modern housepainter would call "imprecise." And finally, lets remove any knowledge they could only have gained by studying other painters who invented new methods only far after the ancient period.
I reiterate. No.

why wouldnt you just use a picture ya goof

Oh yeah, I do like John Kacere. Great work.
This Godward fellow was a pretty eccentric, even pitiable, character. But I'll be damned if he didn't make some beautiful images.
