"Attributed to Goya until 2008, new art historical and technical studies led to a reconsideration of painting’s attribution, particularly following the tentative reading of the marks in the lower left corner as the initials “A.J.”. They may refer to Asensio Julia, a friend and occasional collaborator of Goya. The composition is inspired by Goya’s print of The Seated Giant (www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/334002). The grandiose and metaphorical conception of the print is here translated into a narrative scene of ambiguous meaning. The subject has been related to the Spanish War of Independence but it has also been given more mundane interpretations, such as a storm in the countryside. The uncertain, repetitive brushstroke, the strident colours of the small figures and the dull illumination of both the landscape and the colossus, bear little resemblance to Goya’s impeccable technique."

The man himself
OP I want to recommend to you the ancient book of Enoch. (the version that pre-dates Christ) It tells the story of man eating giants; the inspiration for this painting I'm sure. Should check it out.

The inspiration for that painting is Saturn devouring his son

Goya was a very troubled man, with a troubled mind, in very troubled times for Spain... one of the great masters of all times, indeed.
Platinum class thread.
Thanks to everyone posting art.
I am crying because this thread is so beautiful. Thanks!

Tortured souls make the best art desu.

Joey Goebel's novel "Torture the Artist" is constructed entirely around this premise.
Which obviously only applies to the tortured souls who are great artists anyway (regardless of their depression) and none of the emos who believe their deviations make them 21st century Van Goghs.
Nice thread
how could this not be here yet

A-anon, that is the View of Toledo, painted circa 1600 by El Greco, about two hundred years before Goya.
Nice thread. I live near where Goya was born (Fuendetodos). He is one of the greatest man of our poor land. Thank you.
Can't have a Goya thread with the Black Duchess missing.
