Hurdy Gurdy?

How the fuck does anyone get over sounding like shit while learning the violin? So like when you're practicing, and you're fucking awful, and you know you sound like shit and your housemates/parents/neighbours/whoever can probably hear it and are thinking "Jesus fucking christ shut up or I'll shove the bow up your arse" - how do you stop thinking that and just get on with it? I stopped having violin lessons because I basically wouldn't practice because I was SO self-concious about how bad I was. With my piano and drums it's fine, because I can plug headphones in. But I just couldn't bring myself to play the violin because I knew I sounded so bad.

(Nonprofessional) Austrian violinist here. It really comes down to whoever is teaching you to sort out certain beginner's mistakes/challenges. I went through "classical" training when I was a kid, these days there are other options (like the Suzuki method, which my cousin teaches, and is well suited for very young beginners).
Take posture, for instance: if you are holding the violin with your left hand in an unnatural (i.e. potentially cramped/unrelaxed) way (perhaps due to a shoulder rest that doesn't fit your neck/shoulders) you automatically handicap your ability to adapt your left hand/arm movement which directly translates to good or bad intonation.
Same goes for the right hand holding the bow, the most important aspect for tonal quality is the contact between bow and strings: a sucky grip on the bow equals sucky contact/sound.
Still, it's true that for the first months or even year, most violinist will produce atrocious "music". But once you get past that awkward first stage via learning by doing (which positively requires regular practice, since your body needs to "learn" the intuitive feel for the various arm/handmovements to produce better sounds) it's a great instrument to play since there are virtually no limitations beyond the general tonal range of the violin.
