Anyone seen the documentary "Tim's Vermeer"? Some ordinary guy with no art skills creates a replica of a Vermeer. Highly recommended if you're into art.

I usually imagine that images like this are to cause us to question the nature of art, storytelling and emotion. I would be more worried about your intelligence if you thought you understood it completely.

Incredible painting.
Is that a real place BTW?

It's a capriccio, so almost by definition it's probably not. It's an architectural fantasy taking different ruins, exaggerating their effect, and putting people doing mundane things among them. It's a terrific genre.
Have another Hubert.

>Robert's landscapes are the product of a refined imagination. He used the same motifs in endless combinations, creating a majestic, poetic image of the past. His actual manner was somewhat improvised: apparently random details, architectural fragments or genre scenes, suddenly appeared in his pictures, invading a monumental scene.

This is an awesome painting. it played a big role in the movie "Melancholia" w/ Kristen Dunst. It refers to the mini-ice age that happened at that time (1600's? 1700's?) The hunters are returning empty handed. There was starvation in the villages.
The central theme: Man doesn't fair well when faced with global / cosmic slights of nature.
