The entire school day, in every classroom, was talking about the attacks. Most of it, yes. A lot of the debris was buried, from the impact, or thrown for hundreds of feet. The crash of the 747 in Lockerbee, most of a 747 vaporized (ie. got shredded into small pieces). The search area for human remains was 70 acres, and they found debris 8 miles away. The same thing happened to the other 3 planes - most of the planes were fragmented violently, with only small sections surviving, or the landing gear and engines that were found on rooftops near the towers. Commercial jets are fairly flimsy, all things considered - but anything is going to vaporize hitting something at 500 mph.

The bodies were identified by DNA in PA, because not enough of the bodies survived. Same thing in the city - look at the debris pictures at the street below the towers right after the crashes. If it's red, it's probably flesh. The passengers on the flights basically got put through a 500mph woodchipper.

I watched it from CA, too, trying to get through to family in NY - I knew a cousin used to work in the towers, wasn't sure if he still did. (He didn't). A bunch of cousins were working in the city that day, and all they can say is it was insanity. People running, crying, and then a long walk out, over the bridges. None of them were near the towers, tho, the closest was halfway between mid town and the towers, and she said they couldn't see anything from street level except smoke, but they felt it when the towers came down.

The strangest part here was seeing the fighter jets patrolling around the bay, after it happened. When you see f-18's overhead...you know shit's serious, like right after the Loma Prieta, and we saw army helicopters fly overhead towards the city.

I find this really interesting. As I've never lived in a built up city, I can't get my head around the scale of the buildings and the destruction caused by the collapse of the towers.
