Trying around with http://hi.cs.waseda.ac.jp:8082/

pic related is from my family albums. Reichsautobahn between Worms and Kaiserslautern in 1939.

Quick howto guide: Throw bw photo into page. Get lowres color photo back. copy image. Open original highres photo in Gimp. insert lowres color photo. stretch to full size of the original. set blend mode to "color". profit.

Works quite well even for engravings.
>>
This german ad for schoolbags also works quite well.
>>
Randomly tried it against some artwork fro Hellgate London. Top is original bottom is colors reassigned. Man, this looks stunning...
>>
>>2846793
someone needs to run it against some classic B+W films.
>>
>>2846854
OP here. I tried it on stills from the first episode of Hogan's Heroes. it worked excellent. only sometimes the camp ground (stomped dirt) was mistaken for grass and thus colired green instead of brown.

if i get time, i may make a little program to auto process a minute or so's worth of frames. where can i get a b+w short from? preferably limited to 1 min?
>>
>>2846890
you could take the intro of some old tv show like lassie

That's pretty cool. Gonna hang around here for a while.

As we go from this...

It surely works better with some than with others.
Here it works beautifully.

I'm glad my little how-to guide was helpful in creating these.
The results are indeed great and just occasionally things are a bit off. But then again it's "just" a research paper and not a finalized commercial product.

thanks for this.
I use PS
past as colour overlay
autolevels
clean up
vibrance ++ etc.
>>
>>2854093
I will be trying this on my Shorpy collection
>>
>>2854093
wish I could clean some of the edges of the colour transition ?

As I said it's not magic, yet. I'm sure they or someone else will come up with even better methods soon and those will probably work properly for highres stuff.

OP here again.
In case someone's wondering where I found this, it was at "two minute papers":

from ww2 thread. Colorization and white balance.
>>
can you guys explain how to do it step by step i am confused with gimp
>>
>>2860212
Ok, so here's the step by step guide from the first post, commentated with additional help. note that I'm not using gimp in english, so some menu items might be named slightly differently than I say:
Throw bw photo into page.
>This means you open the http://hi.cs.waseda.ac.jp:8082/ website and drag-drop your local file into it, or open it via the open-dialog. your image and a spinner should appear.
Get lowres color photo back. copy image.
>When the colorized image appears, right click on it and click "copy image".
Open original highres photo in Gimp.
>open your oiginal highres photo in gimp. under the top-menu item "image" (iirc), go to mode and set it to rgb if it isn't already set to it.
insert lowres color photo.
>simply press control-V or right click and select "insert". In the "layers" toolbox, a layer named "inserted layer" (or so) should appear. right click on it and click "make into new layer" (or so)
stretch to full size of the original.
>select the resize tool from your toolbox and click on your little colorful image. a dialog will appear. click on the chain next to the pixel numbers, so it is disjoined. enter the pixel numbers of the full size image. you should see those in the window header at the top of your gimp window. confirm. zoom in using + and - and use the arrow keys or the "move" tool to match the resized layer to one of the corners of the oriinal image, so they line up.
set blend mode to "color".
>at the top of the layers dialog, there is a drop-down box that usually says "normal". when you have selected the colorful layer i the layers dialog, click on that drop down box. one of the most bottom items is "color". select it. (not hue, value, saturation or anything of that sort. just color!)
Now the image should be fancy and you can click file -> export as -> [enter the desired place, name and extension] and press export.

I wonder if that one would work better if it was fed to the algorithm in smaller chunks, so it wouldn't meld the dusty ground with the soldiers.

Two test images from the pilot episode of Hogan's Heroes
>>
my plan
> get any good B&W film
> convert in image sequence using blender
> get audio converted to mp3 on freac
> colorize those images by writing a script
> join using blender and add audio using openshot
>enjoy
it can take a year may be. Is it feasible ?
>>
>>2868385
how about coloring only frames that are different enough from their neighbour frames ad then just use that to color the others. that would surely be a speedup of 1500% or so
