General Forrest would often ride into the center of Federal lines to confuse and kill the enemy.

Many such examples are detailed in the book "That Devil Forrest" if you'd like to know more.

"A Harvest of Death" (name of the photo) was taken by Alexander Gardner on July 4th, 1863. A day after the battle.

Probably a ceremonial event or photo op rather than a living history/reenactment.

Especially considering how all the regimental flags are close together and they use all three variants of the Confederate National Flag.

>>2806349

Early in the war, regiments on both sides obtained their uniforms from private sector rather than being issued them by the government, usually with funding raised by some wealthy supporter. Since Francophilia was all the rave of 1860s America, many regiments adopted a French style of dress. Including Legionnaire desert kepis (the Irish Brigade's Zouave contingent, 3rd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, and 4th Alabama were among the most prominent wearers of the desert kepi), which protected their wearers from the harsh rays of the Southern sun.

By mid-1862 however, most of these uniforms were worn out from near-continuous use, private funding had dried up, and new Army regulations led most self-style Zouave and Legionnaire units to discard their unique uniforms for general issue equipment.

A notable exception was the 14th Brooklyn, New York State Militia, which managed to obtain state funding and keep their red and blue uniforms for the duration of the war.

I meant more about that arm, what's up with that elephant trunk/octopus looking appendage holding the union soldier? Or do I just fail at art viewing?

Even correctly titled!

Good job anon, I always seem to have to correct somebody whenever they mention the stars and bars when they clearly mean the Battle Flag.

Geez I'm that guy. Oh well.

These gifs made from the stereoscope pictures are cool. It was the original 3-d photography and it’s too bad it’s gone way out of style . ..

A Quaker gun is a deception tactic that was commonly used in warfare during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although resembling an actual cannon, the Quaker gun was simply a wooden log, usually painted black, used to deceive an enemy.

who fucking painted this? why does one of the 'northern' flags have (what looks like) 50 stars on it? wtf kind of retard..
>>
>>2834867
The US flag used 33-36 during the war. The 35 would be a 5x7 grid. I count 5 rows and 7 columns, with a star missing in the middle row, so I would guess this was a 34 star flag.

Also noteworthy is that they did not remove stars for the states that seceded.
