No offence, but why did this particulae painting become so popular and overused? Seriously asking

I'm really not sure, but I totally agree.

'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' is a colour woodblock print (carving) c.1830-33 and the first and most famous in Katsushika Hokusai's series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'.
Being a woodblock it was able to be reproduced thousands of times over—leading to it's popularity in Japan and subsequently the greater global art world.
... basically none of those original prints have survived years of earthquake/fire/flood/etc and all modern day prints housed in various museums and private collections show distinctly varying quality depending on the impression source.
This one is housed at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and shows much greater detail in the clouds.

It's kind of the Mona Lisa of Japanese art, so it's hard to appreciate it because of how overexposed it is. Basically it uses negative space in a really interesting way, where the negative space is the same shape as the subject (the wave). It's also a very difficult subject to carve and print because of the fine detail.

Oh come on fine
Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan!
O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shallt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother.
Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!
So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!
- Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host.

thanks for taking the time to explain, anon. i can appreciate the texture of a van gogh painting, but the rest is incomprehensible really.
i wish i "got" art that isn't just about making a pretty picture. i look at a gaugin and whatever value it holds just goes right over my head.
Anyone have the paintings (acrylic or oil I don't recall) of bright solid colors sort of smeared together in a smooth, circular pattern. There were several images from an artist posted on /hr/ or /wg/ a few months ago. Thanks
>>2829500
>whatever value it holds
These days, Van Gogh’s paintings are in the 50-120 million dollar range but he couldn’t sell them in his lifetime. Damien Hirst made this fancy diamond studded platinum skull at a cost of $14 million . .. and then had a hard time selling it! (Eventually he sold it partly to himself.)
This is the best thread i've ever come across on 4chan
>>2829500
A lot of art is just about the process of you absorbing the work and the thoughts "produced" "within" your head.
I also love the texture and feel that Van Gogh captures.
