I've always wondered about guns with all those holes drilled into the barrel... Wouldn't that negate most of the bullet's velocity, if the "bang" is flying out sideways instead of pushing the bullet?

That's not the barrel, it's the handguard. Just an aluminum tube you grab from. The barrel is the black thing sticking out the end of it.

I agree, but they're unfortunately the only opportunity I have to actually see firearms of any kind outside of a museum, much less see one while it's shooting.

It's a Welrod. A bolt action, silenced, pistol, very quiet. They were used in WW2 by Allied operatives in occupied Europe, as well as the resistance. They were also used by British special forces after the war until the 1980s, according to wikipedia anyway.
