It is safe. Problem is, because of an absolutely horrifying failure state, it has to be perfectly safe. And it isn't and it won't ever be. Nuclear power is a gamble, basically. Right now it's probably a gamble worth taking but ultimately I see nuclear as a stopgap technology.

Some people say that the ukrainian experts intentionally overstimated the collapse risk of the current sarcophagus to get more funding from the international community.

However, the existing sarcophagus was built in a hurry, was never designed as a long term solution, and a side section of it collapsed a few years back. So it might not be as necessary as some people make it to be, but it still is necessary.

This is one of the very few HR pic I have from the work inside the existing building. Here we see the turbine hall, where 2 huge walls will be build to meet the east & west extremities of the NSC and seal that section of the building.

That required removing a lot of old elements here from before & during the accident.

Surely, but that probably won't happen before long. The current funding is only for the commissioning of the NSC; there isn't money to actually dismantle the existing sarcophagus. So, for a while, we might only get pictures of the existing sarcophagus from inside the NSC.

Why are they even doing this? Is there still enough radioactive material in there going into the air that it's a concern? Shouldn't they be more worried about some leaching into the groundwater or maybe cleaning up those buried waste sites?

The danger is a collapse of the existing sarcophagus, due to its very unstable base. That would release an enormous amount of radioactive dust into the area/atmosphere. That's why they're building the NSC, they will dismantle the existing sarcophagus and recover most of the radioactive material to make the site as safe as possible.
>>
>>2763140
Apparently the view from within the Sarcophagus is that there are many holes in the roof of the structure. So a new containment building is still necessary.

>>
>>2767863
They want to decommission the whole complex, and that's going to bring up a lot of dust during the process. The new structure is to contain the work to dismantle the existing sarcophagus and the reactor remnants within. The existing sarcophagus is not suitable for this, and is itself contaminated and in need of disposal.

No worries, that's a reasonable question to ask since I didn't post a summary.

For your question about "safety", there's no risk for most workers. It gets a bit more dangerous when working inside the existing buildings, but that's very rare and all workers are monitored to ensure their safety. I think workers receive less radiation in a day than you would during a transatlantic flight.

Yes. Since all reactors are shut down, the pond isn't as needed as before, so they keep the water level low (they need to pump water into the pond, so it's fairly expensive to keep doing it).

As far as I know, there's no radiation issue with construction equipment. Radiation is pretty low in the area. I know one of the crane that previously worked really close to the reactor is currently for sale, so I guess it's safe.

>>2772481
Prompt dosage is super low now. The main issue for cleanup is more akin to a chemical hazard (hazardous dust if ingested/breathed in) than direct radiation. Radiological rather than Nuclear.

Here's what it looked like after the Designed Stabilisation Steel Structure was added in 2006. To this day, it still looks like this.

Some more explanation about what you see in >>2773085:

The building in the foreground that is partially uncovered is the turbine hall. It extends all along the power plant's reactors. The section near reactor 4 was damaged during the accident, and the roof was covered with an extra layer (old rusty sections). The shiny section in the middle was added a few years ago after part of the building collapsed under snow weight.

So the only thing they removed from the existing structures are two sections of the turbine hall to erect walls that will seal the NSC. Oh, and the old ventilation stack also (but they added a new one, so all in all, doesn't change much).

The NSC isn't designed to keep radiation from going out, but instead to keep radioactive dust from going out. That is done by the innermost layer of Lexan. The NSC has two layers of skin: one on the inside (stainless steel, Lexan) and one on the outside (corrugated steel, insulation, EPDM membrane, stainless steel).

Well to be precise the huge glob of highly radiocative shit (the former core of the reactor, all melted into goo) has in fact trickled down in the specially dug out basement as the safeguard was designed to do

It's a batshit bonkers reactor design (produces weapon grade plutonium instead of waste for example) but it's well designed for what it is, and if CNPP dudes weren't deliberately fucking with it it'd function perfectly well to this day, as CNPP reactors 1-3 and Leningrad 1-4 (same exact model) have

Quoting myself from last year:
>You might be able to compare it with the Aerium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Islands_Resort). NSC is about half its length, but a bit wider. The NSC structure also is 12m "thick" (even more near the top), so it would be a bit less impressive than the Aerium from the inside. If you only look at the "core" of the Aerium (ie. without the rounded doors), it's more or less what the NSC will be.

I realize that there are already multiple layers of concrete over what the building was like before the accident, but there's something fascinating about that for some reason, as though one of the last remnants of the Soviet Union is only now being sealed away or something.

I've been following these threads for years, thanks OP for keeping at it all this time.

I'm not 100% sure about the fact that the skidding starts on the 12th. But it's imminent anyway.

The official word is that the skidding will start "in the coming days", but still no date. I doubt it will start tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'll post some recent webms.

What are they going to do with the DSSS? It seems kind of difficult to work on right near the ruins of the reactor

I don't know the exact plan, but I assume it'll be dismantled with the sarcophagus.

I would love to see the process of dismantling, hopefully they'll publish pictures of that too

Unbelievable to think a structure of this size can be made to fly. Really makes you think about mankind's engineering skills.

So do I, but they'll need to find money to do the dismantling first. There's another fundraising scheduled soon I think. Anyway, I'm sure they'll at least post some pictures from the inside of the NSC, showing the sarcophagus.

I would definitely donate if I could. I would also like to see what's underneath the cascade wall in detail.

One of the wall the built inside the turbine hall, to join with the NSC. It's filled with a huge amount of concrete.

By the way, what's the bump limit in /hr/ ?

The dismantling will most likely be extremely expensive, as well as very challenging and even dangerous. Most likely some of the engineering involved is not even invented yet. They say that the arch is meant to last 100 years so who knows.

I went this summer. It was fucking hot. Tip: if you decide to go, go in the winter or fall. Pripyat is overgrown and you wont be able to see a lot.

That's part of the appeal, city retaken by nature. Also how damn quiet the place is. You could hear a bear shit in the woods, if there were any.

No, not living anywhere close, never been there.

No. I don't have much more information than before. It'll be over on november 29th, maybe before that.

>Will it make tourism safer?
Not really, because tourism already is safe.

What is your part in this. How do you have access to drone footage and pictures of the process if you don't work or have anything to do with it... Or did I miss something.

uhm after the accident they built a big ass coffin for the reactor to stop radioactive shit from leaking out. The whole reason they are building the even bigger one now (the hangar looking one) is because they say it is breaking down.

It is not even near safe. It is not even near to a good chance not to fuck up everything. And there is not even a plan where to put the radioactive waste for the next thousands of years. This is nothing more than a nightmare.
