then this, a photo of Dan Gurney sporting the first ever full-faced motorcycle helmet, back in 1960: The caption reads:
‘Dan worked with Bell Helmets in California where he helped to develop the first full face helmet. He had seen motorcycle racers wear similar ones at Ascot Raceway in California. Dan wore the first full face helmet at Indianapolis in 1968 and then also introduced it to Formula I racing at the British and German Grand Prix in 1968
build a motor racing stadium out of a highly flammable material, strapping on a leather helmet, climbing into a vehicle with no discernible braking system, punching the throttle is my idea of a good time. Sadly it’s no longer allowed...

Le Mans Disaster (1955): 83 people were killed and 120 were injured. This sporting tragedy is the most catastrophic accident in motor racing history. Pierre Levegh's Mercedes crashed and blew up at 125mph, killing Levegh and sending debris flying in to the crowd. The Pathe cameras captured the disaster on camera.

Bumping this thread
The Tri County fair added a new attraction this year; a midget racer competition. With thrills, spills and chills, along with a whole lot of noise, it was a guaranteed
good time. And for those in the know, "Hot" Holtz, dare devil driver and his #27 Kurtis Kraft, was there to keep things hoppin'.
This photo was taken after the event and #27 can be seen here already on the trailer. But the fans wanted some up close and personal time with the renowned car. Mr. Holtz, always accommodating, raised the hood to let everyone see the heart of the mechanical beauty.

>In 1970, all of the American pony car manufacturers were represented with a factory team and top driving talent: Chevrolet had the Chaparral Team Camaro Z28 driven by Jim Hall, Ed Leslie, and Vic Elford.
Clearly a '70-1/2 Camaro in Chaparral livery to go with the Ed Leslie text.

I'm guessing this is '71 or '72. This was the period in F1 when engineers were just getting an understanding or wings=down force. But the later cars got uglier.
