Am I the only one who gets sad when I realize that most of these weapons will never fire a shot in anger? It seems like a waste. Like training for the Olympics for decades but the games keep getting postponed until you're too old to run anymore and you get traded to some African team and fall apart.

Si vis pacem, para bellum.
Thankfully, the Syrian conflict and to a lesser extent the Donbass War has allowed many of these systems to be used on the battlefield.
I'm keeping this thread on life support until the weekend and I'll see if I have time to dump some more photos.

True with the tradeoff being it doesn't perform well in deep waters. I have a picture of a Buyan-M tipping a lot during a turn in the Mediterranean on an exercise but the photo isn't big enough.

A good example of why you can't just develop something to be an all around technology. You can always excel at everything but you will be a master of nothing. Best to have multiple classes of vehicles and equipment with specific specializations dedicated to certain jobs.
>>2736492
Unfortunately, technology has been advancing faster than the economy can keep up with it. The most obvious example of all time maybe the F-35 but there are a few others out there like the PAK-FA (which is unlikely to see a low end fighter complementinon the high/low fighter mix common in large air forces) or even the USN's LCS program. Pursuing multiple systems with various specializations is no longer economically feasible.

I've always wondered, why do pilots have such high ranks? For example Giora Epstein and Robin Olds were both colonels. But in the infantry the colonels aren't shooting people right in the trenches, even if they were at the front line. Why did they decide that only commissioned officers could fly?
>>2736877
Because you have to be smart to operate a multi million dollar piece of equipment. That doesn't make the system (literally) foolproof though.

Excuse my ignorance, but are shot traps not a thing in modern tanks? This armor seems like it would deflect.
>>2739068
Yes I do. Here is a shot I particularly liked.
Here is a good link for you: http://russianplanes.net/type/Tupolev/Tu-95/142
That website has fantastic photos of all sorts of Russian aircraft.
>>2739079
VSN is the translation of BCH or Boopyжeнныe Cилы Hoвopoccии. Literally Armed Forces of Novorossiya. The rebels that fight against the Ukrainian Junta.
Shot traps are no longer a thing in modern tanks because the vast majority of the anti-tank ammunition used consists of sabots and shaped charges. Neither of them will ricochet. Sabots rely on their kinetic energy to punch through armor and if they fail they will break apart. They rarely ever bounce off.
Shaped charges on the other hand detonate once they make contact with their target. Of course that does not guarantee that the shaped charge will defeat and penetrate the armor.
The armor on many modern Soviet/Russian/Ukrainian tanks is shaped like that so the anti-tank round will have much more trouble defeating the armor which can be easily explained through trigonometry. It is the modern evolution of sloped armor that was found in the T-34.
