The Olifant is the standard MBT of South Africa.
It is an extensively upgraded British Centurion, which first entered production in 1946. AMX-13, the 13 stands for the vehicle weight in tons. Of course it weights over 14 tons but who is counting?

The AMX-13 would be the first tank France produced after WWII and Frances experience in the war are reflected in the design. Forgoing heavy armor the AMX-13 was designed for maximum strategic mobility, France remembering all to well how its heavy designs where unable to react to German actions in 1940. Unfortunately while it was certainly mobile the AMX-13 was initially armed with a autoloader-fed 75mm gun which proved inadequate when used by Israel in the middle east, in addition the virtually non-existent armor made it vulnerable to enemy fire. They were later upgunned to 90mm and then offered 105mm guns and in French service equipped with four heavy ATGMs.

An inside look at the worlds first massed produced composite tank armor inside the Soviet T-64.

The T-64 was a massive technological leap forward in tank design with all of the maintenance and cost issues associated with such a change. The armor was one of the good ideas, while it is not as good as current as composites it was a great increase from the homogeneous armor steel armor of previous designs. The armor would later be increased by the addition of explosive reactive armor, visible on the far sides of the photo. If you are wondering why the armor is being removed its part of the demilitarizing process to let police shot through the armor if needed.

Like the AMX-13 the AMX-30 was designed for maximum strategic mobility at the expense of armor. A good design for its time the AMX-30 was showing its age by the Gulf War where its limited armor and 105mm gun resulted in French armored divisions being kept far away from Iraq's armored formation for fear of losses. Against the few outdated tanks attached to Iraqi infantry that the French did come across the AMX-30 performed well.

The Abrams has received the Tank Urban Survivability Kit upgrade package, here clearly distinguishable as the desert-tan painted components. The upgrade consists of Explosive Reactive Armor on the sides, armor for the commander and machine guns everywhere, including a .50 cal mounted on the barrel of the main gun which in this photo is missing. The Iraqi T-72M has also received an upgrade for urban combat, much more improvised than the TUSK kit, consisting of an armored screen for the commander around his hatch. Visible in this image is the size difference between the Abrams and the T-72. Most of this difference is due to the T-72 using an autoloader rather than a human loader in order to use less armor and thus save weight, something that was seen as vitally important to the USSR with its less developed infrastructure and mediocre quality bridges. Iraq purchased a number of M1A1M Abrams tanks from America figuring that if they worked for America they would work for Iraq. Then they forgot to train crews.

The M1A1M is (one of) the export variants of the M1A1 Abrams which America used to great effect in Iraq in 1991 and 2003. The main difference between the M1A1 and the M1A1M is the lack of depleted uranium in the armor of the export model, most replaced likely by tungsten, and while some posters like to make a big deal of this it is a minor change, the US using DU mainly due to cost considerations. Whatever the armor is it weights roughly the same as that used in the US Abrams, as shown by the "68" on the tank hull front showing the weight in tons.
Initially in combat the Iraqi tanks did not preform to expectations, mainly due to poor crew training, low morale and incompetent command, and losses were relatively heavy. Most losses were abandoned or mobility kills such as the one in the pic which were then lost when the area was overrun. More recently they have started to do better - they could hardly do worse - but the Iraqi crews continue to be unable to fully utilize the capability of their, rather expensive, tanks.

There are two main variants of the Leopard 2 in service right now, the 2A4 and 2A6. They are easy to tell apart as the 2A4 has flat vertical turret armor while the 2A6 has wedge armor as shown a few posts above. Germany still has a number of less advanced 2A4 tanks due to budget reasons and both designs are popular on the export market. Note on fording equipment, seen here is the more bulky option used on the Leopards which can act as an escape route in case the tank gets stuck underwater. The Soviet T-series of tanks opted for the much more compact method which only provides air for the engine, leaving the crew in a sub-optimal situation if things go wrong.

The successor to the AXM-30 is the Leclerc, or if you want to annoy frenchmen, the LeClerc.

Introduced to late to see action in Gulf 1 the Leclerc departs from the previously lightly armored French designs while attempting to retain as much strategic mobility as possible. While it does have the heavy composite armor that defines current western designs the Leclerc features an autoloader, decreasing the armor needed and thus weight although the placement of the autoloader - which was necessitated by the requirement for blow out panels - makes the weight savings less then a turret-popping Soviet style autoloader. The Leclerc suffered high unit cost due to low production numbers and its costly electronic systems, nevertheless it did find export success with the UAE. In UAE service the Leclerc has seen action in Yemen where it has preformed well despite the somewhat questionable ability of the crews. Apparently a very good tank for jerking off in due to the compartmentalized nature of the interior.

Compare to the longer turrets of the human loaded Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams and the shorter T-72 turret with its autoloader below the turret. In the background you can see a number of VAB APCs and a single VAL armored car. Staying true to its light post-WWII roots the French use these lightly armored vehicles in armored units for carrying infantry and scouting. In the US Army these roles are filled by the much heavier and larger M2 and M3 Bradly.

The Leopard 2A6 is a fine tank. The armor is unknown but from what armor measurements we do know the protection along the frontal arc is comparable to other western designs. The gun is a 120mm L/55 which is both more powerful then the Abrams 120mm L/44 but comes with the cost of shorter barrel life and some problems moving around forests. The best part about the Leopard 2 is the price, nations across Europe were retiring their tank fleets and the Leopard could be bought far cheaper then any comparable design, however this supply has mostly dried up. The cage armor is surprisingly effective at stopping RPG rounds and is much much lighter then solid side armor. However it is easily damaged by poor driving, which means it is often only used in combat zones.

Germany had no idea what it was doing with armor production in WWII and the Jagdpather was one of the results.

Unable to produce enough turreted tanks to replace its losses from the inexorable meat grinder of the Eastern Front Germany turned to the assault gun, armored vehicles based on tank chassis that mounted cannon in casemates rather than turrets. This offered a number of advantages as not only did the assault guns use less steel and cost less then a turret tank but the also allowed for larger cannon to be mounted, allowing for production lines of obsolete tank designs to remain open producing chassis for usable assault guns. And then the inefficiency of German armored production struck. Rather then stick to otherwise unusable tank chassis and minimizing steel use German designers who saw the success of the initial deigns attempted to make bigger and better designs. What they ended up with was a tank that lacked a turret, needed the same production capacity as the Panther, used more steel then a Panther, cost more than a Panther (due to low production numbers), and had only a marginally more useful gun.

The USA has agreements with nations that it trains in about how much destruction US exercises can cause and how the US Army compensates those who own property they damage. Most of the time it is rather straight forward, try not to drive into a Germans house and if you do cut a big check, but it turns out that trees are counted as property. It varies by nation but the US is either not allowed to damage forests intentionally or has to pay for any damage caused, either way the result is the US Army does not cut off branches to use as camouflage for its tanks even when the locals are covered in them.

Recognizing the flaws of Jagdpather Germany changed their process to better suit their needs. Just kidding they doubled down on a bad idea and made Jagdtiger.

The Jagdtiger was everything wrong with Jagdpather made worse with its own set of issues thrown in for good measure. The chassis was from the King Tiger, the least available option. The massive vehicle took exorbitant amounts of steel and money to construct, its massive armor and complex mechanical system eating up resources that were in short supply. The gun was a colossal 128mm cannon unique to the tank which, while impressive, was massive overkill for the job at hand and simply added to logistical strain. The drive system of the vehicle was not up to the task of moving the superheavy design, an issue made worse by the under-trained drivers of the time, and breakdowns ended up claiming more Jagdtigers than enemy action. Few even met the enemy in combat as breakdowns and air attacks ravaged the German behemoths, those that did see combat did reasonably well but were let down by poorly trained crews who panicked under fire. The Jadgtiger is perhaps the ultimate symbol of Germanys unfounded faith in Wonderwaffen, hoping beyond reason that if the next design was even better armed and armored then it could somehow produce victory.

It should be noted first that Germany and the Soviet Union view the role of the assault gun differently. While in Germany the role of the assault gun quickly changed from infantry support to an ad-hoc tank doing both anti-tank and infantry support as they rushed to fill out depleted Panzer divisions there was no such shift in the Red Army. This difference meant that Soviet assault guns typically had cannon with low velocity and a large bore, well suited for blasting apart fortified positions. The ultimate Soviet assault gun was the ISU-152 which was armed with a short ML-10 howitzer already in use and built on the chassis of the Soviet standard heavy tank IS-2. The 152mm gun proved devastating in a direct fire role and even proved a potent tank killer, the sheer amount of explosive contained in its HE rounds shattering any armor unlucky enough to be hit. That is not to say the ISU was not without its problems, chief among them being the weight of the ammunition for the 152mm gun and awkward ammunition stowage, resulting in a rate of fire of only two rounds a minute, and poor visibility.

DESU I don't know how to go about finding hr pics of certain subjects other than using google. I don't really have the patience to go through those military photo message boards. I have access to some photo archives through my university library card, but the interface sucks, they're slow, and rarely hr.

I can't tell if these are the uniforms you want, but it's the right war.
