Patch there is the Cross of Lorraine.
For its defense of France in World War I, the American 79th Infantry Division was nicknamed the "Cross of Lorraine" Division; its insignia is the cross. The German 79th Infantry Division of World War II used the cross of Lorraine as its insignia because its first attack was in the Lorraine region.

let's not forget our beloved animals who served in world war I !
During the war, Cher Ami (“dear friend” in French), a carrier pigeon, was one of hundreds of birds used by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France to transport important messages. In October 1918, Cher Ami, despite being badly wounded by enemy gunfire, delivered a message to Whittlesey's “Lost Battalion” of the 77th US Infantry Division, which was trapped on the side of a hill in northeastern France during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, surrounded by enemy soldiers while being barraged by friendly fire from the Americans, who were unsure of the battalion’s location. Although the Germans shot at and hit Cher Ami after he took flight, the winged warrior nevertheless managed to return to his home coop and deliver a message from Whittlesey containing his men’s location. As a result, the Lost Battalion was saved, and Cher Ami later was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. After he died in June 1919, the famous bird was preserved by a taxidermist and put on display at the Smithsonian.
The true 'Valiant', a french carrier pigeon.
For four days the Fort Vaux near Verdun was under german shelling. Major Raynal no longer had any connection with the outside. On June 4, 1916, at 11:30, the 'Vaillant' carried the ultimate message from Raynal: "We stand firm, but suffer an attack by gases, it is urgent to free ourselves, give us optical communication with Souville that does not respond to my calls. This is my last pigeon. "
The bird crossed the battlefield and despite being heavily intoxicated he accomplished the mission; he was later awarded.

>>2644463
The krag was phased out of service with the regular Army by 1907, as M1903 Springfields became available; however, the Krag was issued for many more years with the National Guard and the Army Reserve, including service in World War I with rear-echelon U.S. troops in France and as training arms at various Stateside bases

The Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker are fantastic books based on WW1, very well researched.
The passing bells relates to a poem by Wilfred Owen
Anthem For Doomed Youth
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

From the History of the 79th Division, published about 1920;
The 310th and 311th Machine Gun Batallion sailed out of Hoboken on the USS Leviathan on July8,1917. "It is interesting to note that the two machine gun batallions were the first to sail overseas with the new Browning guns."
They made landfall at Brest, July 18.

You might try checking out the US Library of Congress, US National Archives, US Army Center of Military History, UK Imperial War Museums, and the German Bundesarchiv. The IWM and the Bundesarchiv obviously have lots of photos, but they are not particularly high resolution.
For pictures of German soldiers from old postcards, look up drake goodman on flickr. He has a huge collection.

Here's a bit of insult to the injury, the USS Leviathan was launched by the German HAPAG (Hamburg-American Line) as the SS Vaterland in 1913 , seized by the United States Shipping Board in April of 1917. She was then used as a troop transport until 1919, and after the war became part of The United States Lines until 1934.

Glad you liked it. It is a pretty interesting picture. Here's another WWI dog, with all of his decorations.
Anyone else really dig war aesthetics except for WWI? Everything feels shabby and ill prepared, so many pics have people going around in socks and a hat, and the uniforms look like normal coats instead of combat uniforms. Artillery is cool tho.
I don't particularly like older wars (older than WWI) but WWI just makes me uneasy.

Definitely
WW1 was tragic start to finish. WW1 is the epitome of Kings sending men off to their death. Pretty much the entire 1800's (Which were probably the worst century to ever live in Europe) were just setting the stage for WW1 then all hell broke loose and all the great powers declared war on eachother. It didn't need to happen at all.
And the actual fighting conditions were some of the worst of any war, arguably the worst. Old school tactics with modern technology.
WW1 will go down in history as the pivotal point when Europe started decline (Fun(?) Fact: 1914 was the peak of people of European descent as % of world population, at 30%). It completely broke the continent and changed how everyone viewed war, and the aftermath directly led straight into the more bloody and overshadowing WW2.
