fyi google degrades the quality of videos on youtube over time. old videos are reencoded with a lower bitrate and reuploaded server-side to save space after some time. fucking jews. so far only 1080p videos are affected by this, which is why horizontal fancams are usually so shit in quality. vertical cams (1080x1920) are treated like 4K videos and youtube's encoder is more generous with the bitrate (you can find 60fps vertical fancams with 20Mbps video bitrate) but it is only a matter of time before they start butchering those too.

I don't think that's true, bro. The reason why old videos look worse now than before is that DASH bitrates are below the bitrates they used for the old HD formats. You can still check this by downloading both the regular 720p and the DASH 720p for any HD video.

So old 1080p videos used to look better because they used to have higher bitrate before the non-DASH 1080p format got binned.

I'm thinking this could be a process of performing a fast encode first with a higher bitrate so the video will be available as soon as possible, and then replacing it with a slower encode later. If that's the case, then theoretically there could be no noticeable quality loss. Though that might sound unlikely in this case since they slashed the bitrate by almost 1/3.
