A plane is not solely an empty sphere. There's a lot of other stuff in it too such as luggage, various plastics and other metals, electronics, and people.
Secondly, the planes were traveling at about an average of 483 mph. I could propel an empty can around twelve miles an hour using my full strength. Given that the wall I would smash the can against is made of wood and other building materials, the can would not do any damage other than possibly scratching the paint. If I could propel the can at 483 mph, however, it would go right through the wall.
