My take on all of this... Dan and Phil were always emo, and part of that identity is having an ambiguous sexuality. They were heavily playing on that at first, but then stopped because their 12 year old female fans were taking things too seriously. I do think that they were together romantically at some point, it is very hard to deny that. But I also believe that people exaggerate about some things.

That valentine's video for instance... I just don't think it's real. As I grew older, I started to understand that people talk in another manner to their partners. In that video Phil mentions things that we all know, it is almost as if they had no inner jokes or references. It was just as any of other Phil's videos.

Also, Dan aggressively denying being gay in 2012... So he makes a Tumblr page just to answer his fans problematic questions, in an honest manner. And I just find it funny that people got so offended by it. The guy is literally trying to be serious and respond questions without jokes in between, but everyone took it as Dan hating its fandom and being homophobic.

This last year Dan has started making ambiguous comments about his sexuality again. Most recently, he answered to a Marcus Butler prank message in a flirty manner. However, he still does silly nonsense, like, in the documentary about their tour, they dedicated an entire section to make it clear that Phil was sleeping in the main bedroom on the bus, and Dan on a bunkbed (yeah, right). But anyway, at this point I pretty much just cringe at the comments that are still like "OMG, PHAN IS REAL".... I don't know, I'm so over that.

are dan and phil still popular? I don't watch their videos anymore since I'm an adult but I sometimes get the urge to become a gossipy aunt. They're totally fucking each other though

Yeah now that sounds like something I might do...I would bet that the responsibilities were just getting overwhelming (no doubt compounded by creative exhaustion at this point) and cutting back seemed like the only option.

I don't know exactly what youtubers make, but I would guess they both have a decent financial cushion at this point, especially after the book and the live tour. If Dan is living relatively frugally and investing extra income he'll probably be fine. And if not he can live with me.
