when i was in high school, our first coach required us to wear jockstraps underneath the single, but we could practice in jockstrap and shorts, without singlet

later in the season and during competitions, always our reg singlet and jockstrap

the coach who replaced him let us wear regular underwear, jockstrap or nothing at all--if it was cold, we could wear a white cotton teeshirt underneath the singlet, but only for practice
