why not? shoes cost money and if you're used to it it's not really a big deal. even my grandma said that when they were kids their mother just coated their feet with thick layer of pine tar at spring so they got more used to it as it was wearing off so they didn't have to wear any shoes for the whole summer.

It was pretty good for it's purpose of being worn over a bascinet during a cavalry charge. After the charge or if you needed to dismount and function as heavy infantry you could just take it off for more visibility and air flow.

In fact some museum survivals have retention chains for quickly throwing it on and off without discarding it.
