I think the going theory I heard is his family would have to spend all their money on legal fees and wouldn't receive pension or something.

I don't know how "comfy" the prison he would have gone to was, but the wikipedia article claims that his sentencing could have been up to 55 years, which is hard to characterize as being merely "a few years".
