>le French hated Germans meme
The French foreign minister that really wanted war with Germany was shunned by the government after the Moroccan crisis in the early 1900s. Hell, after that the French government was vehemently anti-war.

In fact, when shit was hitting the fan the French were actively trying to de-escalate the situation by having their troops back off a couple of kilometres from the Franco German border.

Of course Germany still declared war, and the rest is history.
>>
>>964907
The Russian elite was fucking Germanophiles. Administration and army were full of Germans from Baltic.
Tzar have little ambitions and Russian Empire has very little interest in marching on West. All they want is to remove kebab. It could and would become great market for German goods.
But German elites and Willy thinks they can get it all for free as Prussia just beat France not that long ago and Russia get their ass kicked by Nippon.
So they just look for a pretext to go to war.
They expect crush France and dismantle Russia and grab all the spoils.
Old powers were mostly interested in status quo. It was Germany that was emerged power.
>>
>>964945
Russia's biggest misstake through history must have been to ever choose Germany (or Prussia) over France
Just imagine if that they had marched on to Berlin during the seven years war.
>>

France was old rival of UK. Good job Germany for making them sleep in one bed.
Russia and AH were rivals but they both plus Prussia were also old allies and guess thanks to who the old alliance of 3 Empires crumble.
Yep it was Germany. Good job again.

The biggest Russian mistake were Katharine called "Great' and that she lost Poland and let Prussia rise to power.

>They were Germany's fucking ally, goddamit, Why would they wish to see Germany perish?

Out of necessity. The German and Austro-Hungarian governments had hated each other ever since Bismarck, but they had bigger priorities than bashing on each other's empires. It's really unlikely that after a Central victory in the war, the two would have been very close for much longer.

>And still it was Germany that declared a war at the for refusing to demilitarize the border.

Out of paranoia. Germany needed to prevent Russia from beating down Austria-Hungary, and they knew that the French would love to sieze the opportunity to take back the Lost Provinces during the confusion, and probably would have started the war before Germany had the UK given their pledge to join with the other Entente Powers. There were plenty of plans drawn up already by the French command for an invasion through Alsace-Lorraine, and forces were at the border ready to go through with it once the war began.

There were mulitple times when he was asked to abdicate and he easily could have either refomred the system or simply just given more responsibility to his far more competent ministers however he stubbornly refused to listen or act on that advice and dragged the whole system with him.

>A simple life is all he ever wanted. After abdication he was finally happy, being freed of his political duties of keeping a crumbling state alive by the force of sabre and smoking barrel. At last he could enjoy the simple things in life and spend time with his family.

Blind idealism thought up by people who romanticise the hell out of the period and who base all their opinions on that one qutoe about him not wanting to be Tzar when his succession was to be announced.

>The only reason Russia was gonna beat down Austria was because of the German blank check that Austria used to attack fucking Serbia
Russia was humiliated after losing to the Japanese. Russia needed an opportunity to present itself as the hegemon of the Slavic sphere. Also, it was a good way to remove Austrian influence from the Balkans. That's why Russia sided with the Serbian terrorists that were operating in the Austrian vicinity. It was not Germany who incinerated the conflict, it was Russia, by backing Serbia.
>>
>>967121
I think its important to realise that the Russians were horrific diplomats. When it came to Japan they legitimately thought they could stall them for months on end whilst they built up troop numbers and that Japan wouldnt attack. Likewise when you read about the July Crisis Nicky doesn't seem to realize the diplomatic impact of mobilisation and still seemed to think that the Germans would not attack.
>>
>>967121
they backed serbia so much they told them to accept the ultimatum (which incidentally they did in nine points out of ten)
and this was not the first flashpoint in the balkans during that timeframe with both austria and russia involved, yet not a single one of the previous ones led to war
also russia was not the one sending out ultimatums designed to be rejected so they could have their war (including a german ultimatum with two responses prepared - both of which were to mean war regardless of the russians accepting or rejecting it), that would be austria and germany
and by what warped logic could a party that - should we somehow be totally blind to german actions at the time, mind you - was not a part of the initial dispute (those being austria and serbia) the party who "incinerated" the conflict?
also pretty sure you meant ignited there
>>
>>966978
Not the guy you're talking to, but he's right.

France - a liberal republic - backed the most conservative, backwards, authoritarian regime in Europe, which was the Tsarist Russian Empire, in their attempt to protect the country that was perceived as a haven of terrorists that murdered the Austrian heir to the throne.
This is like Canada allying with Russia and Mexico in order to protect Afghanistan after 9/11 from the US invasion.

Both France and Russia didn't do a bit to defuse the situation. They saw war as a legitimate solution to the problem and played a game of chicken with Germany. And Germany played with them and held the course - none of the participants wanted to flinch and be publicly humiliated. There was much at stake here. Russia needed to reaffirm its position as the hegemon of the Slavic sphere, Germany couldn't afford losing its only ally it had left on the continent - which was the dying Habsburg Empire that was already falling apart.

Wars aren't started by singular actions of single parties. They are to be looked at within their historical context, and France and Russia are to blame just as Germany when it came to the outbreak of WW1. Perhaps France to a lesser degree than Russia and Germany, but still.
>>
>>967149
>they backed serbia so much they told them to accept the ultimatum (which incidentally they did in nine points out of ten)

Some believe that it was an attempt to localise the conflict, signalling to the other parties involved that Germany would not back down on this so that they'd have to stay out of it lest they wanted to risk the outbreak of a great war.

Considering that Russia didn't want to have that war, and Serbia was ready to agree with Austria on everything that didn't make them into an outright puppet, shouldn't it have been better for Germany to pressure Russia to just accept that?
Any other reason for Germany to want Austria to go to war against Serbia than hoping for a chance for war at a moment in which they viewed their neighbors to be weak? They should have known or at least guessd that Russia couldn't just sit by and lose its face as Austria destroyed an Orthodox Slavic country?

This.

That sentence could be applied to lots of things in history.

>Any other reason for Germany to want Austria to go to war against Serbia than hoping for a chance for war at a moment in which they viewed their neighbors to be weak?
That misses the point because it assumes that Germany was waiting to prey on weaker powers. The German military did not consider itself "strong" in relation to the others, it feared that in the future the others would be even stronger and capable of dictating policy. They didn't feel they were yet ready for a war, they just feared that in the future the situation would be even worse. Keep in mind: Germany is pretty much indefensible and both France and Russia are their enemies. Also, Germany had a spy in the Russian embassy which informed Bethmann-Hollweg about naval talks between the British Empire and Russia in regards to landing operations support in North-East Germany, which completed the German fear of being completely surrounded by enemies. Germany is seen as the aggressor, but frankly - when surrounded by these not exactly friendly powers, it is quite understandable to be a bit twitchy.

>They should have known or at least guessd that Russia couldn't just sit by and lose its face as Austria destroyed an Orthodox Slavic country?
They assumed that Russia wouldn't risk going to war over them. In hindsight this wasn't true, but that's what they believed.

Yes, because obviously the Afghan state had failed at controlling the situation. The US believed that the only way to restore order was to march in themselves.

New generation of politicians also got hit by the Purges. They simply weren't widely known.

> and a key figure of the Security Service both categories that were purge bait.
Well, there were a lot of political enemies of Stalin in the Soviet Security.
In NKVD/OGPU to be precise. Soviets had several agencies. Stalin's Control Comitee (the one that oversaw Party members) wasn't really hit by Purges, for example.
Also, Purges happened 10 years after Dzerzhinsky's death. It's hard to say how the things would've turned out with him alive.

> I have a hard time telling the difference between someone who was a bro of Stalin and someone who Stalin thought was useful.

So what do you think about having a narrative that most of the ones in it was in some way bad, but Germany was the worst?
>>
>>967427
Using words such as "bad" in this context already completely misses the point.

All of the participants had legitimate interests and they had a good reason why they acted as they did. This is not a story of bad guys who went out to do bad things. If anything they can be blamed for stubbornly steering towards an avoidable war that completely ruined Europe - but this blame does not rest on one party alone; whether it rests on Germany more than others is a matter of debate, but the idea of Germany being some sort of "perpetrator" that aimed to conquer Europe is something straight out of war time propaganda.
>>
>>965181
>>
>>967443
But I don't blame Germany because I think they wanted to conquer Germany, I blame Germany because their rulership and high Command thought Germany was at a risk from the rising power of Russia and that a war was needed to stop Russia from reaching past Germany. I also blame Germany because they clearly was the most aggresive one as they declared war against France without them doing anything to really deserve it, attacked the strictly neutral states of Belgium and Luxembourg to go through with it and refused to participate in the Brittish attempts to make the whole situation calmer, which I think Britain organized and France did participate in.

I may of course be biazed because I am possibly butthurt by the Germanophiles who call the Versailles treaty unfair who think that Germany should have been allowed to keep all the polish territory who they been trying to assimilate into German ones.

>I blame Germany because their rulership and high Command thought Germany was at a risk from the rising power of Russia and that a war was needed to stop Russia from reaching past Germany.
In the same sense you might blame Russia for playing their games at the Balkans and messing around in the sphere of influence of the Habsburg Empire.

>I also blame Germany because they clearly was the most aggresive one
I don't think that is necessarily the case. I would say that Germany was more twitchy than the other powers, since they were in the worst strategic position. It was less a matter of Germany being a local bully than it was the case of Germany being a cornered animal that was lashing out.

>as they declared war against France without them doing anything to really deserve it
France was an ally of Russia. Declaring war on them was the natural response.

>attacked the strictly neutral states of Belgium and Luxembourg to go through with it
Wars are fought to be won. When you're Germany's geo-strategic disposition, the only way to solve such a conflict is by knocking out one of the opponent's first. If you're unwilling to do that, then you might not fight a war in the first place and let yourself get bullied around. It's easy to blame Germany for such actions, but it's questionable whether other powers would have planned any differently had they been in Germany's position.

>and refused to participate in the Brittish attempts to make the whole situation calmer, which I think Britain organized and France did participate in.
As I said earlier: Germany had a spy in the Russian embassy which told Bethmann-Hollweg about naval talks between Russia and the British Empire in regards to Baltic landing operations. Britain was not perceived as a neutral power any more in German eyes.
>>
>>967474
>In the same sense you might blame Russia for playing their games at the Balkans and messing around in the sphere of influence of the Habsburg Empire.
Yet Russia didn't want to have a war against Austria and even pushed Serbia to accept whatever the their weaked neighbor Austrians asked about.
The Germans just jumped at the chance of getting a war with their still weaker ally Russia

>I don't think that is necessarily the case. I would say that Germany was more twitchy than the other powers, since they were in the worst strategic position. It was less a matter of Germany being a local bully than it was the case of Germany being a cornered animal that was lashing out.
Isn't the best thing then to just push really, really mush for your ally to not go to war or not promise to support them whatever they do? And I don't agree to "they were a cornered animal that was lashing out" Wasn't it Germany that had gotten herself in that position by through her own policies making the UK and Russia to change from a pro German stance to a pro French one?

Sorry if I am missing your point, but won't such a stance do away with any sort of international laws of diplomacy or war as all nations at some point gets to a point where they may be better off by breaking those?

If I am using logical fallacies or anything like that I am sorry about it.

Which in the end they did not. Refer to the earlier Afghanistan example in >>967256.

>The Germans just jumped at the chance of getting a war with their still weaker ally Russia
The idea of a German plot surrounding the carte blanche has been disputed from multiple sides. It is by no means a clear cut situation here.

>Isn't the best thing then to just push really, really mush for your ally to not go to war or not promise to support them whatever they do?
Not necessarily. Refer to >>967225. The idea was to pose a threat that would discourage the other participants from getting involved at the Balkans in order to localise the conflict.

>Wasn't it Germany that had gotten herself in that position by through her own policies making the UK and Russia to change from a pro German stance to a pro French one?
This wasn't necessarily deliberate strategy in regards to foreign policy but a consequence of inner-politics. The Harden-Eulenburg affair played a role here for example.

The point is: Germany ended up in an isolated position, and in that regard, Germany's fear of being surrounded by hostile nations was understandable.

>won't such a stance do away with any sort of international laws of diplomacy or war as all nations at some point gets to a point where they may be better off by breaking those?
That is exactly what I'm saying. All these treaties are meaningless in the face of people that are dying. If you take up arms, you're fighting to win and it is your responsibility to make sure that you're not wasting the lives of men in an unwinnable conflict.
