apparently the black ships and nukebombs had an effect on Japan's view of the rest of the world giving them a sense of being overwhelmed by forces beyond their control, yet their economic success after ww2 runs contrary to their predicted gloom, it seems to fit with the taoist principle of flowing like water rather than making futile attempts to control everything
