After losing the battle of Las Navas De Tolosa the sultan had his African slaves chained to his tent before escaping so they would have to fight without any possibility to escape.
This scene shows how a Christian knight rides into the slaves.
The kingdom of Navarra actually got their flag from the event, the golden Chains symbolizing the chains the slaves were chained to and the Green ruby being the one they found in the sultans tent.
