The main thing I'd say is that it's easier to move units around. Trying to move a large force in Civ IV wont involve ever having to halt your forces to manage their movement because they became incapable of moving due to the one unit per tile rule.

Ranged warfare, no unit stacking and hexagon tiles are actually a huge improvement for gameplay which makes it more complex and gives it tactical depth.

Diplomacy in V is shit but it wasn't much good in IV either. And city states are nice.

Good goy.

I suggest you don't go all out with your first game or two by starting up one of the bigger scenarios. A good starting scenario is the tutorial one, the Korean War, although I would say the Yugoslavia 1941-1945 (I believe that's its name) is good, too.

There's naval warfare, yes. There are even a few scenarios that simulate battles from the times of Napoleone. I think there's even one that takes place at Marathon, but I'm not sure. It may be a mod. There's a bunch of mods for the game online which you may want to check at some point.

It's definitely not the easiest game out there but I reckon you'll get good by playing a few games on the easiest setting and by setting a handicap on the AI.
Also, another tip: the pop-up window when going over different tiles may not appeal to you (it didn't to me when the game got update) - there is a setting in the options to turn it off. I also turned off the fancy graphix but that's a matter of personal taste.
>>
How role-play friendly is EU IV? I want to lead a perfect Confucian state to the domination of all under heaven.
>>
>>928905
They're full of shit. The cycle goes like this:
> Civ game is released.
> It's worse than the older game.
> Then the first expansion pack hits, and it's almost as good as the previous one.
> Then the 2nd expansion pack hits and it's better than the previous one.
> Civ game is released etc.

The best thing about Civ IV was the Revolutions mod and now when it's out for Civ V there's no reason at all to play Civ IV unless you really really like Fall from Heaven II.
>>
>>928905
I've played both, they are different, some thoughts:

V is not dumbed down, you have to plan ahead, however IV lets you micromanage better. Stacks of doom vs 1 tile is just a matter of taste, combat seems to be better balanced in V though.
>>
>>928855
Medieval 2 and Napoleon as well.
>>
>>929638
pretty much this right here.

Civ 4 and 5 are both good games in their own right, and I don't think civ 5 is "dumbed down" as much as people claim it is.

civ 5 is basically a macro game, the entire strategy is managing growth and playing to your strengths and advantages for a long time benefit.

civ 4 has a more micro-oriented approach to it, they are both good games in their own right.

Darkest Hour.

It's a paradox game that represents the world from 1933-1964.

You can play any country at the time period and try to form the world in your own ideal.

There is also a good alt-historical mod called Kaiser Reich, which is a world built on Germany winning WWI.

It's incredibly fun, I have been playing it since it was Hearts of Iron II when it first came out.

Ppl who claim that one-unit per tile is superior to unit stacking are those who did jack shit at early stages of the game. Instead of balancing empire building, military, and diplomacy, they would build pretty wonders and do nothing but tech. They would piss of neighbors like refusing to give away a tech to a leader like Shaka and Caesar (who will declare war when the diplomacy status is "pleased"), and do things like having exactly one warrior defend a city. AI Caesar would then bring a stack-of-doom consisting of Praetorians next to OP's border and subsequently beeline to the nearest OP's city. AI Caesar would zip from city to city, forcing OP to post a comment like this.

It's pretty easy to play the Ottomans well enough to remain a great power. The true task is to play the Ottomans well enough to actually rival or be better than the other great powers.

Granted it's only 1862, so don't count your chickens. I hope you've secured some continental alliances so you can beat up on either the Austrians or the Russians. That's the real fun of an Ottoman game.

Greece is allied with the British, who I have recently allied with to secure my position against crises (there were major flashpoints heating up in my territory). I have mainly been focusing on maintaining my current territory because I don't feel I have the manpower to go on the offensive against the Russians or Austrians (I have a big army, but I would be fighting on multiple figures); I think I could defeat any one country in a defensive war, but I am cautious about going on the offensive. My next plan is to complete the conquest of Egypt.

Currently #6 on the Great Power Roster. Made big headway on literacy.

I am pretty new to Vicky II, and the wiki said it was supposed to be kind of hard because of bankruptcy. Next playthrough will probably be Sokoto, which I assume is much harder.

I actually really like the KINGZ expansion. My real beef with the game is just that multiplayer is completely fucked and the game crashes on startup on half my computers while my disc copy from 1999 runs perfectly fine.
>>
Is there any game that heavily features baroque architecture / style?
>>
>>928905
This might be a dumb reason but I genuinely think the reason why I can't play Civ 5 is because there is way too much neutral/open space. I hate looking at a map that has huge gaps of unclaimed land, it just isn't realistic to me. A big thing that drove me in Civ IV was getting to the lategame so I could see my empire pushing against the borders of my neighbors.

I really want to like Civ V because a lot of the mechanics (namely combat, which actually takes a little bit of thought) are way better. It's just the map and the fact that I have to travel so long to get to my opponent that irritates me.
>>
>>934730

>>
>>930697
I actually do like them.

They're almost adorable in how they simplify the Three Kingdoms period.
>>
>>936657
you are right, civ 6 should fill the map with tribes and you start off as a tribe, each with their own AI or player, we have the technology

also maybe ck2 tier potential for rebellions, so if you forge a huge empire you have to keep it together and enemy AI will form alliances to counter-balance you, this would prevent a positive feedback loop and blobbing

also the technology system needs to change, maybe every turn there is a chance a city discovers a new technology depending on the buildings it has which then has a chance of spreading to civilizations it has contact with, spreading quickly if you have a lot of trade connections

you gain a technological advantage not by having a larger economy and investing more in research (contributing to positive feedback loop blobbing), you have to foster the best conditions for technology and you can only gain a small advantage unless you are physically separated like the aztecs and spanish

maybe also terrain dependent technology, for example flood plains are great for agriculture early on, then agriculture spreads from this latitude, places like greece start to become productive during the iron age, then places like italy, then germany and france, then the mongolian steppes and so forth

in normal games you start in latitudes where egypt and sumer were, but if you want you can start as a mongol tribe and try to contend with more advanced civilizations until it is your time to shine

win 7. Could probably make it and civ2 run with enough messing around but in my experience no matter how hard you try it always leads to some kind of bizarre gaming breaking crash or bug and you dont want that after playing for 50 hours and spending hours getting it to work, its just a pain in the ass.

>flamethrowers can't stop the banzai

>also maybe ck2 tier potential for rebellions, so if you forge a huge empire you have to keep it together and enemy AI will form alliances to counter-balance you, this would prevent a positive feedback loop and blobbing

Na..don't like this. This would mean that players have an incentive to keep their empire small, which goes against the very philosophy of Civ game. Empire size shouldn't be dependent on AI alliances, and vice versa.

>also the technology system needs to change, maybe every turn there is a chance a city discovers a new technology depending on the buildings it has which then has a chance of spreading to civilizations it has contact with, spreading quickly if you have a lot of trade connections

This would result in players setting up a pangea map all the time because only this will provide the most number of trade connections early on. Same type of map all the time means low replayability value. Furthermore, you'll probably build the same type of buildings all the time in all of the games. If so, the tech that you would get would also be almost identical in the order you get. This would mean very similar outcomes = low replayability.

>you gain a technological advantage not by having a larger economy and investing more in research (contributing to positive feedback loop blobbing), you have to foster the best conditions for technology and you can only gain a small advantage unless you are physically separated like the aztecs and spanish

Why shouldn't the empire that has put effort into building a massive economy and expanding its size through war be rewarded with quick tech advances. Every actions that has gone to benefitting the empire in the long term should be rewarded not punished.

The last two points would result in low replayability value

oh thanks, historically, civilizations had difficulty conquering barbarian tribes because of the terrain and how well adapted steppe peoples or jungle tribes were to their environment. An army marches on its stomach.

>>938576
neat, hopefully sid meier takes note

>>941271
most rebellions are due to local rulers who want power for themselves and the britbongs got to the industrial revolution first by turning London into a commercial center, a French chemist could invent something, but the innovations would be implemented in the British economy first. I'm not sure what simplified game mechanics could represent that

>>941837
Players can expand, further expansion just becomes more difficult the larger they get, they are faced with new challenges throughout the game.

>This would result in players setting up a pangea map all the time
So? If that is what they want why stop them. They're the player.

I think the problem you are describing is unrealistically long trade routes and excessively rapid technological development. Trade routes could be limited by technology and distance, early on in the game there would be no massive silk road leading from one side of the map to the other or ocean going ships travelling 1000s of miles and transfer along long routes would be slow

>the tech that you would get would also be almost identical in the order you get
if technology arises due to chance it should come in different orders each time.

>Why shouldn't the empire that has put effort into building a massive economy and expanding its size through war be rewarded with quick tech advances.
They are rewarded, the rewards just don't allow them to blob the entire world, they have to accomplish more things for which they will be rewarded for. Throughout the game the player constantly faces new challenges. It makes for a more interesting game, halfway through th game instead of being a massive blobpire you are a competitive state like France or Britain in the 18th century

As that other anon mentioned, Rising Storm 2. But you'll have to wait up to 8 months for it to go into full release. In the meantime, there's a decent 'Nam mod and server for Arma 3, run by some realism clan called the 7th Cav. It's pretty fun.
