University of Lisbon, doing a course that enables me to take classes in several schools within the uni (I know it's common in the States but it's a one of its kind thing here). It's centred in the Humanities school (Faculdade de Letras) and I plan on taking there about two thirds of my classes, the rest being in the Law school (FDUL), the Economics school (ISEG) and the political science school (ISCSP), by order of relevance.

Question from an oldfag-- I went to Williams, although I had scholarship offers to NYU (the NYU one would have included med school acceptance and tuition), U of chicago, a bunch of others. I didn't crack "Harvard/Princeton/Stanford," waitlisted by all 3. Got into Yale bc I was a legacy.
Anyway, looking at the admissions stats, is it all but impossible for a White Male to get into a good uni these days? I look at my Alama Mater (williams) admissions numbers and the %, and at the percentage of places like Yale... Is it possible for regular White, non-Jews who aren't coming out out of Deerfield/Exeter to even have a chance, unless you are really good at a sport?

also, reminder to White people-- "People remember where you went last." If you didn't make it into your first choice, you just recalibrate, remember you have the transfer option open if you manage to do really well your first year, and just commit to wokring harder to get into the Law/MEd/Business school you want. Learn from everyting you did wrong. If you are White and can possibly get away with claiming to be "Latino," do it. I should have, still greatly regret. Could have claimed my Italian maternal grandparents came from Argentina, making me "Latino."

Grades to do an Ancient History course in Bristol were slightly higher than straight history when i applied if I remember correctly. I've had a lifelong fascination with antiquity inherited from my grandfather, spent a lot of time at archaelogical digs and history is sort of the family trade, if that counts as a deep passion, then I'm the first category.
>>
>>933000
are you doing History?

I'm about to graduate History from Aberdeen and I'm one bad shift at work from killing myself, have fun
>>
>>933208
Sure. It involves being very poor or coming from some fucked up circumstances, possibly being in your mid to late 20s for extra brownie points, but yeah.

But then we do live in a world where all of that is quickly becoming irrelevant. Undergrad is meaningless everywhere and may as well be done online, graduate studies are also more often done online by people furthering their existing career in the field. Getting into grad school is more dependent on test scores and cirriculum vitae than spooky handshakes and schools in new england.

The only time any of that bullshit might matter at all is getting into some sort of graduate assistant position somewhere relevant to your PhD.

you do hardly any actual history until 3rd year, something like less than half your credits in 1st and 2nd (people have complained about how many dogshit subjects you need to take in 1st and 2nd year but it hasn't made much difference)

professors that have stuck out in my mind are stefan brink, andrew mackillop and robert frost; brink does all the vikings and scandinavian history stuff which we are very good for as a university apparently, and he's like a world class expert in that thing, Mackillop does British India stuff and he's generally a good guy but sets the most work of any professor I've had. Frost does military history and early modern stuff, pretty good as well.

anthony heywood will talk about the russian railways a lot and some people swear by him but he's not for me

might be easier if you have any specific questions that I can answer

If you're in the social sciences, University of Chicago is better. If you're going for medicine or other biological studies they're really good (stem cells were discovered at UW). I heard they had a good engineering program too. It all depends on what you're studying.

My guess is that I wouldn't be able to get into UChicago for undergrad, simply because I don't have any accolades beyond grades and a couple shitty internships at this point. Can a UKer explain to me why university dickwaving exists when everyone vaguely intelligent gets at least 3 As and Oxbridge requires the same grades as about 20 other universities?

>>933730
The difficulty with Oxbridge is getting an offer. It is not with meeting the entry requirements.

>better than most Oxforders
Though Oxford's offers are usually AAA, very few successful applicants end up with AAA. A*AA-A*A*A* is the norm.

>anyone vaguely intelligent gets at least 3 As which about 20 unis require
Firstly, this is not true. Many people get AAA, but don't be misled into thinking that the majority of intelligent people end up with such results. Secondly, though many universities say they will accept AAA and give AAA offers, they actually will accept much lower than that; this is standard practice. Don't think because lots of universities say they only accept AAA that they in fact only accept AAA. Oxbridge and a few others only do this.

>I got 4
You got the equivalent of 4 or you actually did UK A-Levels outside the UK? If the former, little can prepare you for the intensity of A-Levels. Unlike IB or other qualifications which require less depth and breadth of understanding, A-Level is highly intensive -- hence there being dickwaving amongst people who did well in them.

I did 4 and im British. But let's be srs, it's a dumbed down qualification. In the 80s, David Miliband for something like BCC and got in to Oxford. That sums it up. That sums it up hard
>>
>>933881
Miliband got BBBD. He then got a first in PPE and was elected Kennedy Scholar, studying at MIT. He is an exceptionally bright man.

The A-Level regime in the early 1980s is somewhat different to today. They were notoriously much harder.

Its pretty guchi, waterloo campus is pretty nice but I miss my modules at Strand. I spend a lot of time at UCL too though because I am a member of a few societies that didn't have KCL equivalents. Really wish I had gotten into UCL for my course, got offered Public heath or some shit from UCL though and chose to stay with KCL.

>nb4 kcl is shit strand polytechnic
>>
>>935780
You're not missing out much, even though the campus is fairly nice and located in one area, there's a serious overpopulation problem at UCL. Like, I've even had one module take place entirely in fucking Birkbeck. Also, good luck finding a seat at Wilkins library.

That's pretty much why I study at Senate House now

>>
>>934337
ehh, not as interesting as it may seem. Most of the people in my class are pretty unversed in any school of thought and thus don't have much to converse about. It's a good business program, don't get me wrong, but they're passionate about numbers and models to squeeze more profits rather than the ideas behind them.

I'm doing a double major though, so my history courses satisfies that urge for conversation about culture, economic theory, and government. Plus I'm pretty good at it (51/50 for my Modern Russian History midterm)

what exactly are you studying?
>>
>>936162
>>936235
Just to play devil's advocate here I would recommend our local uni. There has been tons of research done that shows that attending a highly ranked school is less beneficial than being highly ranked at your school. This allows you to get more out of your education by being a teacher favorite rather than just blending in to the crowd.

Sources:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2015/03/16/forget-harvard-and-stanford-it-really-doesnt-matter-where-you-go-to-college/
http://time.com/54342/it-doesnt-matter-where-you-go-to-college/

Of course I am not in your head and if you aren't going to be able to do what your passionate about than it might not be worth it but I hope this helps you make an informed decision. Also, I know for some majors this is less true than others. I think for STEM it tends to be more true but for one of my potential majors (econ) it is less than accurate from what I have read.
>>
>>936592
I am going to add that for majors that this tends to be less true of the main reason is for networking purposes. In econ companies want to hire people who they have connections with similar to a lot of the business world. However, it is still possible to attend one of these bigger schools for a graduate degree if you work your ass off in undergrad, giving you the benefits of both
>>
>>936592
Interesting perspective that I totally agree with, I'm just not sure how well I will stay motivated in my shitty state college. University of South Alabama. I hate this state haha.
>>
>>936629
south alabama? jesus okay you should probably go to KCL.
>>
>>936629
At that point a lot of it comes down to what you think of the city and stuff if it really is so nail-bitingly close. It sounds like you don't really like the culture (my mom is from Alabama and she went to UA Tuscaloosa and is still trying to convince me to go there but I can't stand the South) but does that outweigh the difficulty and shock of moving to a whole different country? Also, what majors are you looking at (mostly out of curiosity but that can be a big factor)?
>>
University College Roosevelt in the Netherlands. Fucking retards everywhere, it's a liberal arts college with 600 students.
>>
>>936646
I'm from Nor Cal originally, I only moved here because my parents wanted too and I was 17 so I didn't have a say. I stay cause its cheap. The culture here is awful, I really can't stand it. In fact I'd rather go to a /b/ meetup.

I'm looking into Medical Eng., which I was accepted into at KCL. USA accepted me for Public health science, my third choice and something I really am not super interested in

How difficult do you think it will be? I have family there (Uncle, and two cousins that I am somewhat close too) can't imagine its much worse than the shock from Cali to Alabama, which was HUGE to say the least.

If that's the case I would say KCL is probably your best choice. Also just from a couple posts back and forth I can tell you would rather got to KCL than stay in Alabama, which means that if you don't you might regret it later in your life. If you are really this set on it, it would be illogical to not do it because -- at least for myself -- you will blame any future unhappiness on this one decision.

Hope I helped you a little bit, but this is just my 2 cents and I am a stranger on the internet.

Is missing out on a job the worst that can happen? It’s not illegal to tell a white lie, is it?

“Yes it is and can constitute a criminal offence under the Fraud Act 2006. There are well documented cases where people have even received prison sentences.”

Some students have been jailed for six months for lying on job application forms, it emerged, but the offence carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in the most serious cases.

The disclosure came as figures showed a sharp rise in employment-related fraud, with prosecutions soaring by almost 60 per cent in just 12 months.

According to CIFAS, the UK fraud prevention service, 324 people were prosecuted in 2013 for all forms of fraudulent applications, including submitting false paperwork and withholding information. This compared with just 205 a year earlier.

He's just guessing that the lower ranked have it easier -- that they are so low because they equip their students with invaluable life skills. In reality, they're both equally shit but students at better universities know that if they don't lie on their SSS their uni ranking will go down and their degree will have less value at the end of it. It's simply that people at top 10 are smarter about things.

to be clear i chose to do it at the time and i'll stand by that initial choice, i tried to change once i realised it was a mistake but there u go shit happens

i do have a sincere interest in a lot of it, it is challenging in some ways, but a lot of the contemporary philosophy we've done has really laid bare to me at least how much of modern philosophy is just waiting for science to give us an actual answer. obviously some things (ethics, political philosophy etc) arent like that but fuck me if someone asks i'll tell them point blank that half of my philosophy modules were an absolute waste of time. ik people hate on social sciences in general but imo u can still see how a lot of the research they do could be rly useful eventually when it comes to decision making. by comparison phd research into the most obscure logic puzzles possible seems at best indifferent to reality and at worst quite literally throwing my tuition fees and some hack's life away to answer a question that means nothing in any sense other than within a little game that philosopher's've created because for some reason they're not doing maths.

ye law is very overrated i agree, just more practical rly, opens all the doors my degree does and i'd've had an LLB at the end but thats life innit

Society just generally hate people who got ABB. Don't worry about it. It's more to do with your uni than your course.

>implying anyone out of sixth form cares about A-levels

try again lad, ive had offers from unis way higher than manchester, they were just full of cunts.

pic related btw, not all of want to mingle with studybots and posh cunts for three years
>>
>>943318
Thing is, now I'm a theoretical physicist so take from that what you will. But you never know when something that seems totally useless will end up being really fucking useful.
>>
>>943478
Well, they don't explicitly care about ABB. They care about where it gets you and the academic rigour of the courses delivered. For Manchester, with ABB students, the academic rigour is low for all but one school.

>I've had offers
Offers you'd have not met.
>>
>>943497
>I'm a theoretical physicist
Probably still an applicant.
>>
>>943497
sure, but i imagine theoretical physics is accounting for possibilities that might actually have a major impact on our understanding of the universe. it may never happen, but its useful nonetheless because it could happen. imo, contemporary philosophy of mind, for example, is purposefully obstinate and operating in a space between psychology and neuroscience without actually adding anything to either nor providing a framework through which we might learn in the future because lel its philosophy facts dont real

>>943561

unconditionals from KCL, Bristol & LSE based on already achieved results

please by all means keep trying though, the grade meme never gets old.

good luck with your A levels next month lad, i hope you enjoy Wariwck, i hear leamington's the place to be for high flying studs like yourself ;)

AABB?

The imprecise man is the man who has something to lie. Besides, your qualification is irrelevant. It was for a shit course at decent unis. It's like doing a good course at a shit uni. Overall … lacklustre.

But to get on track -- my point was generally about the status of the university being directly impacted by the quality of students coming in. Whether you have AAAA or BBBB, the general status of the university is not affected -- it's still shit. Hence, indirectly, A-Level results do have a part to play.

No doubt you'll reply with some other iteration of "grade meme" and some silly photo, but we all know it is because you have no substance to offer.

is literally irrelevant to grades, but you wouldnt know that, because youre in college and only care about a levels.

prove me wrong.
>>
>>943724
You're a bullshitter. You said you couldn't get onto the Manc law course because there wasn't space -- that's because you were in Clearing or something. The idea, or the lie rather, that you had offers from LSE and Bristol is laughable. Even if true, not even impressive. Sharing my grades would only give you a benchmark on which you could simply add an extra A*.

>literally irrelevant
Do you know what the word indirectly means? There is ABSOLUTELY a positive correlation between grades of students and status of university. Using literally like a 5-year-old won't change that.
>>
>>943731
no lad, wasnt space on politics&IR was what i said. i was too late to switch to law because by that point i wouldve had to self fund third year which wasnt gonna happen.

I'm hazy on who's who, I think they got reorganized at some point too.
I-1 and E-1 are definitely polar opposites of A-1. I don't know anything about how spider D is now, but I know they're a shadow of their former selves. Ask around about the spider logo in the washroom if you don't know the story.

thank G-Ram's stasi tactics for that.
some people get it in their heads that they can suck up to the trigon and get 1st and shit if they throw their buddies under the bus. Always nice to hear it when one fish/pisshead tries to rat something out and everyone else in the unit refuses to corroborate.

A-1 has got a cuck for a commander this year but he's nowhere near the B-1 commander in blue falcon levels.
The B-1 Commander turned in 3 of his own fish when he found them tipsy in their own rooms behind locked doors.

D-1 is still hush hush and more hard than anyone else in the brogades but B-2 and I-1 got into a pissfight last semester that saw the eye of the commandant fall on 2nd brigade and I-1 get lobotomized.

A whole bunch of reconning passdowns and good bull was going on until around Christmas on the Quad when one of I-1's transfer wags had a mental breakdown or something and they lost pretty much everyone but their freshmen and prissy-corps-staff-cock-sucking leadership.

The boozers are staying on the downlow and best friends with the spiders but I-1 is effectively ruined as an outfit.
They're going the way of the limp-as-noodles A2.

C-1 is getting reorganized because they've only got 2 returning fish.
The guy they've chosen as their next commander is extremely Old Army.
It'll be interesting to see what'll happen.
>>
>>948135
>The B-1 Commander turned in 3 of his own fish when he found them tipsy in their own rooms behind locked doors.
This is probably the most disgusting thing I've heard. Fish year my commander walked in on two zips hotboxing in an endcap room and just called them fucking idiots. Now, this shit?

Sometimes I think the Commandant should just change the As/Bs bottoms to jeans at this point, so everyone knows that cadets are supposed to just be super-boy-scouts.

Though, they can axe as many people as they want, certain units will always have a certain reputation and will eventually try to live up to them again.
