Can someone give me a rundown of what Richelieu actually did? Everywhere I look I either get a grossly oversimplified "he's the reason France is France today" or an overly detailed explanation too dry to really understand.

What made Richelieu so great? Was he effectively the Oberstein of the French monarchy?

Basically he managed to keep france relatively calm and stable while the thirty years war raged in the HRE all while funding anti-Habsburg rebels in Germany and Sweden because Louis XIII was literally a fag and too weak to act on his own. Without Richelieu, France would be a lot smaller

I don't like this explanation, it focuses on the 30 years war which, of course, is very important in the history of Europe and showcases a lot of Richelieu's greatness.

However, his real charm is how he single handedly reformed the aristocracy of France from a robber-baron loose-loyalty band of rich faggots into the Absolute Monarchy of the Sun King.

To be more specific, Richelieu promoted an even larger bureaucracy than ever before, filled with non-nobility, which essentially destroyed any involvement of the aristocracy in how the government was run, stripping them of the real power of their lineage, and enfeebling them by having them work side by side with non-nobility.

It seems simple enough, but in his lifetime alone he solved one of the greatest problems the capets faced since their induction into the French crown.

I wouldn't say he was the smartest to ever live, but this guy managed to unify Italy despite the efforts of the Austrians. Also, he BTFO the liberals and got Garibaldi to support his idea of government.
