There are so many parallels you could write a 50 page essay on everything that's pretty much exactly the same, right down to the war economy, culture, and politics.

Also, the whole idea of the United States rising in the shadow of Europe is almost an exact parallel to Rome rising in the shadow of Hellenic cultures.
