When did the Republican party--founded to end slavery, and the Democratic party--the party of the KKK, perceivably switch places as the racist and anti-racist parties and why?
>>
>>860974
The southern democrats changed votes in the 60's.
>>
>>860978
Explain?
>>
>>860974
They didn't. Some elements of the Democratic Party defected after the whole Civil Rights thing, but the Democrats are still the racist party, they just hide it better now. They've almost unilaterally destroyed black people in America. It's actually a feat, historians will write books about this in the future.
>>
>>861029
>Don't pay attention to the civil rights era, what you really need to know is that the social safety net is really a social safety BEARTRAP and blacks are too dumb to vote in their own self interest now!

Misuse of the quote feature doesn't make you cooler.
>>
>>860986

Great Depression + FDR changed the Democratic Party to an activist gov't looking out for the good of the people sort of thing.

Once economic issues were "dealt with" those with the same thought process turned their eyes to the segregation in the south as the next social ill to eradicate

They didn't. Democrats are still keeping blacks down, but they're doing under the guise of "equality". The Republicans want true equality and true freedom for americans.

It's not just that I've never seen the source of these quotes, or seen them at all outside of this meme. But realistically, there is no way that Johnson would have ever been concerned about needed to secure the black vote, which had voted Blue for the last ~5 prez elections.

I think the /pol/ crowd has some spidey sense that tells them when to jump over to /his/ to spread nonsense.

From the 1860s on, the democrats were made up of southern whites, and urban ethnic white allies. Irish, Italians, Jews, etc. As the 20th century progressed, the balance of power wildly shifted.

The democratic party was made up of Urban Ethnic Whites, and their southern allies.

At the same time, the northern industrial base of the Republicans stopped having material economic disputes with southerners.

Civil Rights proved a wedge issue: Blacks had started moving into the Democratic party with the great migration into the urban centers of the North. They were quite prepared to vote tactically on civil rights, and so were the southern democrats, having mounted two major 'dixiecrat' presidential campaigns. The democratic party went with the bulk of it's urban vote, leaving the southern democrats shit out of luck. But Nixon saw that the Democrats were neglecting their southern wing on the one issue that really mattered to them, and accommodated them.

To WAY over simplify a century's worth of political tides shifting: LBJ

Do people really get the vapors over typing the word nigger? Fucking hell, good post besides that.

Seems to me that supporters of each party like to accuse a devoted subset of the opposite party of being too dumb to vote in their own self interest.
pic related.

I don't really use that kind of rhetoric because its either going to be racist or elitist or whathaveyou

I'd tend to agree, especially if you get a good sourced post, though I've seen some posts of dubious objectively in the past, often relating to events which are ingrained into the popular memory, one that stuck out was a post about the Battle of Cable Street, which immediately started with a character assassination of Oswald Mosley before discussing the actual events of the day, it's those sort of posts, and ones that rely on dubious sources and become popular by trying to inject humour into them that I've always had issue with

You have been memed

"memes are not a meme" was not a meme, until now. Memes are memes and memes are a meme. and "Memes are memes" was probably a meme before now.

""memes are not a meme" was not a meme, until now. Memes are memes and memes are a meme. and "Memes are memes" was probably a meme before now." is not a meme anymore.

>>861260
You're using meme in the "Internet Meme" sense, and not in the Dawkins sense.
>>
people will say that civil rights was the only reason that conservative whites left the democratic party for the republicans, however I think that argument is over stated. Republicans at the time supported civil rights just as much as Democrats. Southerners continued to vote democratic for decades including Carter in 76' and Clinton in 92' so it wasn't a mass exodus like modern liberals pretend.

I think a bigger reason was the rise of the New Left within the Democratic party.
>>
>>860974
The "racist" republican party is just a meme and only exists because the media is 90% affiliated with the democratic leftists.
>>
>>861085
But they're the ones who put it there to begin with
>>
>>860974
They didn't. The Republican Party's policy on racial matters is the same as it was when Richard Nixon was breaking the filibuster led by former Klansman Robert Byrd (Democrat Senator in good standing until his death in 1910.) and Al Gore's dad. That Policy is strict meritocracy.

While there are actual racists within the Republican's ranks, they're there in the democrats as well both parties disavow their positions. What it is is a cynical attempt to silence dissent. And it is. I'm generally pro-choice and pro-gay marriage but I also believe in fiscal responsibility and I think that the US government is a piss poor service provider that doesn't understand the concept of incentive. I haven't joined any political party because none of them really strike me as a natural home. I err on the side of freedom and that's about my only consistent value as a voter.

However, I said that the Affordable care act was a horrible idea. My interactions with my lefty friends went something like this.

>My mom has had cancer twice with a double mastectomy and lymphectomy. This is only going to make it more expensive for her.
>Shut up dude, people only say that because the president is black. You should know better.
>No, these things have a history of creating unintended reprecussions and sometimes they're worth it but I don't see any good coming out of trying to control the largest health market on the planet.

And then the motherfucker went on facebook and started warning everyone about my "extremist rhetoric" and my "receptivity to racist ideas". Flash forward a few years later and my mom's health insurance premiums were jacked up $750 dollars a month with a deductible so high that if my dad has to use it if her cancer comes back, he has to choose between letting his wife die and letting his small business die.

And when I say small business, I mean small. He has two employees.

A leftist accusing someone of bigotry is lying until proven otherwise.

Seems to me like everyone follows one set of values at the expense of others. That's a form of elitism. I can't comment on your choice to murder my brother.

It's called the Southern strategy. Here's Republican Lee Atwater - who advised presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush, and chaired the RNC - talking about it:
