Neither of those picture. Look at Shroud of Turin. There is some doubt about it being authentic or not (the date is wrong but some people say that it cant be dated because of fire damage), but most people agree that it does a good job of showing how Jesus looked and that is how probably he should traditionally be drawn.

The real question is......how did Mary look? There is no such shroud for her, However, I would go with the Tilma of Guadeloupe. Since Jesus is the son of Mary, we can also assume he looked like a male version of her.
>>
We may never know what jesus actually looked like, but he sure as hell wasn't white
>>
>>830833
Except there she looks ethnically Mestizo.

As far as I'm aware the fire damage claims were rather spurious.

Has anyone ever once claimed that artistic representations of him as a western European are meant to be accurate? Only retards believe this. Every culture portrays Jesus and the apostles as one of their own to help make him more relatable.
>>
>>830842

She doesn't look that mestizo to me. Olive skin and dark hair doesn't mean Mestizo. At any rate that is how she looked. So we can assume that if Mary looked Mestizo so did Jesus.
>>
It's been two thousand years. He looked like what anybody wanted/wants him to look like
>>
>>830804
Probably like Lebanese jews do today.

He wasn't black/ethiopid and he wasn't an Aryan european-looking fellow. Almost definitely lighter than the guy on the right, but of course he wasn't the guy on the left.

In short--a Caucasian near eastern man like everyone else in the region.
>>
>>830858
I thought a big thing about Guadelupe was she appeared looking more like someone of Juan Diego's ethnicity and she similar for other apparitions like in Akita or Fatima.
>>
>>830854

The shroud of turin is very mysterious I heard both sides. But either way that is what most Christian think he looks like and its the closest thing we have to a real "picture" of him. Other than that, just drawings.

But in my opinon people are too focused on Jesus race. The thing about the Middle East is that it exists at the nexus of Asia, Africa and Europe. Some are light, some are dark, some have curly hair, some have straight hair. You can't put the whole area into one box.
>>
>>830877
I'm not a Christian but I guess it would make sense to send your messiah to more or less the crossroads of the world.

Well, if you forget about the Americas.
>>
>>830875

Our Lady of Akita was a talking statue. The statue was made first, then the Blessed Virgin Mary spoke through it.

There's no picture of Our Lady of Fatima and all I can see about it is that she was dressed all in white. Not if she looked Mestizo.

And finally Juan Diego wasn't mestizo he was American Indian.
>>
>>830901
Then where did I get the Mestizo thing?

And don't say "I made it up." There has to be some actual account that I'm drawing from that does not mean what I think it meant.
>>
>>830869
Pretty sure Jesus was out in the sun a lot so he probably would be as tan as the guy on the right. It's not like he was a snownigger or a pasty ass office worker

>>
>>830910

While Our Lady of Guadelupe is a patroness of the entire New World, she is of special importance to Mexicans (since she appeared in Mexico) and most Mexicans are mestizo.

Also according to wikipedia, she was used as a special symbol for mestizo soldiers in the Mexican war of Independence:

>In 1810 Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla initiated the bid for Mexican independence with his Grito de Dolores, with the cry "Death to the Spaniards and long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!" When Hidalgo's mestizo-indigenous army attacked Guanajuato and Valladolid, they placed "the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which was the insignia of their enterprise, on sticks or on reeds painted different colors" and "they all wore a print of the Virgin on their hats."[72] After Hidalgo's death leadership of the revolution fell to a zambo/mestizo priest named José María Morelos, who led insurgent troops in the Mexican south. Morelos adopted the Virgin as the seal of his Congress of Chilpancingo, inscribing her feast day into the Chilpancingo constitution and declaring that Guadalupe was the power behind his victories

No, but Lebanese jews aren't that dark. Mizrahim aren't that dark. It seemed like a petty attempt on the illustrator to REALLY drive home the fact jesus wasn't white.

The correct answer are the Jews from and around the immediate region that have always been there. People always forget judaism came from within the Canaanite (phoenician) population so it makes the most sense that the most authentic Jewish population is practically indistinguishable from them.

"Credible" historians saying Jesus existed because of religious texts written long after.

Fucking hell. It's like if in 2000 years they will be saying Donald Duck was real because of the extensive material written about him.

The number of contemporary sources that mention him? The Romans had no record of him. Not only that but there is no historical evidence that Nazareth (according to the bible,a a town large enough to have a Synagogue) or any of his disciples even existed.

Right from St. Paul he was described as a metaphorical person.

The Romans wouldn't have a record of a jewish preacher on the edge of their empire
We have as much evidence as we'd expect of Jesus existing
>>
>>831088
And he did
>>
>>831079
Are you implying i think that the most authentic Jewish population are Ashkenazim? Because I didn't.

The most authentic are the people who have always lived in that region--especially when you consider the people from that region started exclusive Yahweh worship (proto-judaism).

Not a bunch of yemeni arabs.
>>
>>831099
Based on what?
>>
>>831095
There were several Jewish-Roman historians living near Jerusalem around the time Jesus was supposed to have lived. Such as Josephus and Justus. We have extensive writings from them and none of them even mentions Jesus or anything like him.
>>
>>831111
Josephus does indeed mention Jesus
>inb4 muh interpolation
Nope
>>
>>831111
Josephus wasn't even born when Jesus died you retard.
>>
Right pic is probably what the average dumb peasant in the region looked like. You can tell just from that face that this person would be absolutely retarded. This is very obviously not what Jesus looked like.
>>
>>831114
There WAS interpolation but Christians didn't invent his mentioning, just how Josephus spoke so highly of him.
>>
>>831111

>>
>>831121

>>
>>831132
Dont even know what you're referencing m8, just saying Christians altered what Josephus said about Jesus to make him a positive figure in his writings.

>>831125
Then why don't Yemenis look like Lebanese and Syrian people? You're talking about a large geographical spread. Arab is a linguistic group anyways.
>>
>>830833
Oh god look at this wackjob. "Hurrdurr shroud with imprint of Jesus' body, it's so real".

Did you ever even bother reading into it choirboy? There is absolutely no literary mention of the shroud up until the second millennium AD. Furthermore, depictions of Jesus as he is mostly depicted now didn't appear until a big time after his death and most conveniently the shroud of turin shows remarkable similarities to that depiction. It's an obvious fake.

>"Hurrdurr the late carbondating doesn't count as evidence because of repairs after fire damage"

Now that is awfully convenient isn't it? The carbondating dates the shroud to about the same time the shroud started turning up in contemporary literature. Go figure.
>>
>>831074
kek

You've never read through Bart Ehrman

He says Jesus probably existed based on all the Oral Tradition* floating around the Eastern Mediterranean by illiterate Jews, which was eventually written down by anonymous speakers of Greek, but he doesn't bitch when someone doubts that this isn't enough evidence. Nor does he bitch when someone points out the vast amount of lying people did to further the mythos of Jesus, which had to have occurred or else things like the Infancy Gospel of Thomas would have to be considered canon.

So yeah, Jesus probably existed based on how many stories were farting around in a smallish time period, but we don't have your solid evidence or the words of Tacitus telling what the Christians were saying to everyone about Jesus, ending the debate

*Gossip and hearsay

We don't know.

If Isiah is to be believed and if Jesus is the true Messiah then he'll be an ugly fuck because Isiah 53:2 says

>For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.

He probably looked like a really plain and ordinary Jew though, pictures depicting him as a physically beautiful man are laughable especially if done by a Christian as it straight up rejects the Book of Isiah which is a canonical scripture in the Bible.

Shroud of Turin is bullshit.
No real wraparound distortion.
Anatomical errors.
No blood matting on the hair.
Blood does not remain red for that long
Not in line with jewish burial tradition since the body needs to be cleansed and he wouldn't bleed after death.
As far as I know it's the wrong type of material for the period.

You also need to accept that the Gospel of John is wrong (Really not hard to do unless you believe in the bible) since it clearly states that the burial shroud of Jesus is not one piece.

Why would someone who makes money casting doubt on the person of Jesus mind when people cast doubt on the person of Jesus?

Cornelius Tacitus (55-120 AD), "the greatest historian" of ancient Rome:

"Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired. Nero offered his gardens for the spectacle, and was exhibiting a show in the circus, while he mingled with the people in the dress of a charioteer or stood aloft on a car. Hence, even for criminals who deserved extreme and exemplary punishment, there arose a feeling of compassion; for it was not, as it seemed, for the public good, but to glut one man's cruelty, that they were being destroyed."
>>
>>840195
It's a pity that only later copies (Later Medieval ones) of Tacitus' work have been found, that were actually done by Christians. It's not like copies back in those days weren't constantly altered to better fit the views of the copier.

Even if Tacitus' work was copied 1-on-1, he wrote his work after Paul had written his, posing a high possibility that Tacitus just used hearsay to write down his account.
>>
>>840651
Apparently that view is unfounded.
>>
>>840700
No it's not. There are two camps in research, one camp saying Tacitus' account can be accepted, one saying it can not. It's sort of 50/50.

Fuckin hell man Romans used to propaganda the fuck out of everything by making things up or twisting the truth. So did Christians.
>>
>>840768
I'm not the one that actually thinks it's unfounded, it was someone on the 'Did Jesus exist' thread, I think.
>>
>>840195
He makes money working as a professor, and he started out as a Christian and has continued to work with Christian scholars.

If he wanted to make money he would just right books denying his existence and promote them to atheists

Tacitus's account if it can be trusted which it probably can, was written after nero's reign. Its doubtful he was working with first hand accounts of Jesus and was going with what the local community of Christians said.
