From a geopolitical perspective, George Friedman is really fucking good at what he does. All three of these cases have very excellent points supporting them and he makes it easy to see why something like that might come to pass.

...from a geopolitical perspective. He believes the geopolitical realities of the world naturally lend themselves to multi-polar power and a demise of hegemony. He's very bad at understanding how the internal and international power interact with the geopolitical dynamic, especially in economics. In reality, a neutral buffer state will never again appear between Russia and the EU, because Russia is dying and Poland has thrown in with NATO. Japan is becoming a geriatric state further subsumed to US interests and power. Turkey has the best chance of any of them because of the chaotic clusterfuck of the middle east making it impossible to predict any outcome.

You should read the book, because it actually has a lot of startlingly accurate predictions in it regarding Russia and a few other things, and his blog This Week in Geopolitics is very good even if you don't agree with everything in it.
