A negligible length of time. A difference of days, at most.
>>
>>571451
no single weapon turns the tide of war.
>>
>>571514
Not with that attitude

I unironically love this meme.

Didn't turn the tide of the war. The U.S. was already in an overwhelmingly dominant position when the nukes were deployed.

real life isn't age of empires. those cannons didn't operate in a vacuum.
>>
>>571590
The hell are you even talking about?
>>
>>571584
>didn't make nearly as much of a difference as Ottoman troops
>or the overwhelming presence of the Ottomans surrounding the remnants of the Byzantines, after having effectively conquered them largely without cannons
>>
>>571600
One of us is being stupid.

Those troops don't mean anything if they can't conquer the formidable walls of Constantinople. Constantinople has survived so long unconquered because of it's walls despite being outnumbered. Ottoman canons were the only thing that tipped the scales.
>>
>>571584
>3 hour reload time
>wall damage repaired between shots
>collapsed under its recoil long before constantinopal fell

Theres alot of contrubuting factors to the final fall of constantinopal, but this canon though very impressive and moral destroying for the defenders, is not one of them
>>
>>571591

He's saying the cannon is useless without the army to get it there, keep it there, and defend it. The cannon was just a final symptom of other things that were the real turning points.
>>
>>571617
>The cannon was just a final symptom of other things that were the real turning points.
What was the supposed turning point then if not canons finally able to breach the walls?
>>

That would be you.

This is a meme.

Yep, definitely you.

Don't do meme history, friend.
Cannons were a factor. And a very helpful factor, but not 'the weapon that turned the tide' for the Ottomans against the Byzantines, or even necessarily Constantinople.

Japan's supreme council decided to surrender before Nagasaki was destroyed. Instead the Soviet declaration of war with Japan was the main influence on Japanese decision making.

Tanks weren't a gamebreaker in WWI.

Their first battle was a disaster as they crossed muddy/hilly ground when the first tanks where experimented on flat terrain and had 0 suspension.

They broke down frequently and German Direct Fire artillery pieces knocked em out.

They were only ever good at Cambrai.

can you even imagine being part of the crew that had to repair the wall between every shot

Greek fire.
>>
>>572336
This is more or less true.

The french tank that has proven the most useful during 100 day offensive was absolute piece of shit in trench warfare. I don't remember its name - it had some weird gasoline-electric hybrid propulsion I think.
>>572323
There is a good book covering Japan during WW2 written by some French journalist who spent whole WW2 in Japan. Read it if you want to know better.

Generally speaking you've had several... let's call them lobbies. Administration, Army and Navy. By 1945 both Navy and Administration wanted to end the war(they didn't wanted it in the first place) but army held the power since... well - Army was the only existing thing in Japan at this point.

They've managed to convince the few non-mediocre people in the army to pick their side after all 3 of those events basically.

This.

A lot of analysis holds that, had the war gone on longer, anti-tank gunnery and guns would've improved to the point where any tank assault basically would've gone the same as an on-foot charge across no-man's land.

If cannons were the only thing that could crack Constantinople, the Fourth Crusade could never have sacked the city.

useful for holding a position, shooting down aircraft, or defending an armored vehicle. wouldn't win the war by itself, as all sides had them.
>>
>>574307
Of course, by the end of the war, on-foot charges worked fine.

Infiltration tactics worked well enough, but straight charges across open ground into the enemy's maw (as tanks were forced to do) still worked about as well as they did at the beginning of the war.
>>
We'd still be fighting it. WW2 never happens because it's still technically WW1 and Jews conquer the world as there are 6 million more Jews in the world.

not a weapon.

Something that existed before the Mongol expansion and existed after the Mongol expansion.
>>
It difinately would have fucked Germany bad in the 2nd war. They needed those tanks to beat France and Poland.
>>
>>576185
Did not build the Mong Empire alone.

Mongs can't fight for shit as infantrymen and engineers and a lot of Turkic/Persian/Georgian/Armenian/Chinese infantry and engineers were responsible for capturing cities.
>>
>>574337
Wasn't the fourth crusade invited into the city? The Ottomans used canons because no one would invite Muslim armies into Constantinople.
>>
>>576326

Nope. There were a lot of ethnic tensions and politics involved, but basically the whole reason the Crusaders laid siege to the city (twice, in fact) was because the Byzantines were rather hesitant to quarter this huge mob of cutthroat dudes within the city.
